Religion and Fashion

Hi, first and foremost I hope I am posting in the correct area.

I am doing my dissertation on the use of religious signs, symbols and iconography within the fashion world and I would like to balance my essay as much as possible with the opinions of Christians.

The main question I have is about how you feel about the use of religious iconography within the fashion industry, is it acceptable/ unacceptable or does it depend on the situation?

I would also appreciate any general comments or anecdotes you have on the subject.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to look at this,

Yours Sincerely

Depends on how it's used. I have a few crosses and a mustard seed necklace I like to wear. However, it is as a reminder, because, truly, neither are just fashion statements and should not be used to accessorize well. There's a difference between wearing and carrying a cross, which too many people forget.

I don't know. I used to have a couple religious t-shirts, before I got fat, and they seemed OK. But then I got concerned about trying to buy a Christian image instead of working on a Christian lifestyle. And it bothers me because I see people, like "hipster Christians," who seem to think the Christian thing to do is take "cool" secular things and smack a cross on them and make them "Christian," instead of renouncing worldly things and working towards godliness. But I don't know...maybe I'm being too harsh.

So, crosses are ok on religious people and people looking to further there relationship with god but not as an empty fashion statement?

And what does a Christian t-shirt mean? Would one of those Jesus is my home boy/ Mary is my home girl t-shirts count. I was always really curious about those because I'm no longer a practising Christian but I went to faith schools my whole life so I know about Christianity and they always seemed somewhat sacrilegious to me.
