religion questions

I'll tell you what I mean by "if it doesn't match up with the word of God"

If a person tells me a nasty joke, or starts to, I'm supposed to get away from that.
I'm not supposed to repeat gossip, or talk about unGodly things.
I'm not supposed to commit any kind of adultery, either in my mind, or physically, OR, by TALKING about adultery like it's ok.
I'm not supposed to watch unGodly shows on tv.
I should not follow a preacher or priest who doesn't preach the WHOLE Gospel.
I should speak the truth, and use Godly love to speak it.
If I'm thinking about doing something dishonest, I'm supposed to stop right there, and not be
dishonest. In being dishonest, I would have to lie.
No liars will be in Heaven.
I'm not supposed to condone lesbianism or homosexuality.
I'm not to have sex outside of legal marriage.
I am to tell others about how to get to Heaven, and stand firm as I witness.
I am supposed to know what the bible says, so I can tell the difference between
truth and error, between false preachers and Godly preachers.

In the bible, there is an exhortation about every thing I listed above.

What do you precisely mean by "if it doesn't match up with the Word of God"?

Why don't you list a few things that are commonly done today, that don't match up with the Word of God?

I'd like to see your list.

Since this is a "question" thread, I have one:

Will Peter be in Heaven?

And, another thing, why do Catholics have such a GOOD moral base, good life
practices, and yet insist on praying to statues, rosaries, rote prayers, having the priest as
intercessor, and believing the pope is some God/man?
thanks for the kind words about our moral base. I think you've been reading a little to much Jack Chick with that comes a lot of false witness.
Just wanted to clear a couple points for you.
1) we don't pray to statues
2)The Rosary is the Gospel on a string: Christ's life separated into Joyful Mysteries | Luminous Mysteries | Sorrowful Mysteries | Glorious Mysteries so as to meditate on His life
3)rote prayers is no different than Jesus praying the Psalms... I think you're confusing it with vain prayers- prayers can be said in vain whether a written prayer or a spontaneous, it's the disposition of the heart
4)A Priest is an intercessor-( I'll go into the priestly intercession later)but so are you and all who pray to God for others-intercede through Jesus to the Father
5)The Pope is not "some God/man, there is only one God/Man and that is Jesus Christ. The Pope is the visible head of the Church here on earth He is the one who Christ appointed to be the point of unity. He is a Monarch, When David left his Kingdom visibly he gave Eliakim the "keys of the Kingdom" as Jesus gave the Keys to Peter.

Everything the Catholic Church matches up to the Bible, you just happen to have a different interpretation. And so does every person on this forum. You condemn the Catholic Church's interpretation but are you the Authority on interpretation of the Scriptures?

My point was more away from the obvious separations between the Church and the world and aimed more at divisions in the Church. Some denominations believe that if a certain practice isn't in Scripture than it "doesn't match up with the Word of God" and shouldn't be believed or practiced.

Then why do Catholics, and the pope, KNEEL DOWN in front of them?

2)The Rosary is the Gospel on a string:

Interesting way to put that...why do you need a necklace to think about the Bible?

4)A Priest is an intercessor-( I'll go into the priestly intercession later)but so are you and all who pray to God for others-intercede through Jesus to the Father
Then why do you pay him money, and keep him on the staff, if he's no one specially esteemed for his position as intercessor?

5). The Pope is the visible head of the Church
Why don't you like the idea of Jesus Christ being the, as yet, invisible head of the church?
Why do you insist on having a man, paid big bucks, living in a palatial mansion, and
traveling the world?
here on earth He is the one who Christ appointed to be the point of unity.
That's a lie. Jesus never appointed any man to be in such a position of power as the pope is, nor did Jesus say, as He ascended, to bow down to, reverence, follow, and pay money to,
ANY POPE.
Jesus gave the Keys to Peter.
That is a misinterpretation of Scriptures.

are you the Authority on interpretation of the Scriptures?

Am I an authority on interpretation? All I do is quote from the KJV, and let the chips fall where they may.

I'll take that as a no.... It seems as you don't understand as to what some verses mean

What verse are you claiming I don't understand?

Do you understand these verses:

21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22Abstain from all appearance of evil.

We worship with the 5 senses. Seeing an image helps us focus on heaven. Kneeling , bowing, arms extended to the heavens or laying prostrate(face down) are positions of prayer

Biblereader said:

Since about 95% of all people worldwide couldnt read it was a way they could participate in unity with the scriptures. and it's not a necklace- although if you wore one reverently that would be ok

Biblereader said:

He's definitely someone special I'm not saying he's not. and we pay Him so he can eat....what I was pointing out is that you intercede, so if you can why can't a priest?
Biblereader said:

Jesus Christ is the head of the Church and the Pope is the visible head as He made him that way

How much money do you make? what percent do you give to charity? do you give someone a shirt off your back? How many cars do you have? what about unnecessary goods do you have in your house? what do you do to love your neighbor and make the world a better place?....it's best to remove your plank first before looking at someones speck
.....here on earth He is the one who Christ appointed to be the visible head

why do you give your self more power than the pope? did God appoint you??? I think not? or is that your private interpretation?

I do and I love the 1st Thess.

how bout these do you understand these?

2 Peter 3:16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

2 Thess 2:15* So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

2 Thess 3:6* Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

2 Peter 1: 20 First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. *

This thread is giving me a bit of a headache! :) On the one hand, it has general religious questions about the WCG and some good points on how to walk one's walk so that one won't be led astray.

But then there is this whole 'catholic' Q and A going on, which is better discussed in the RCC Forum in Apologetics.

Don't get me wrong, I think the questions and answers in this thread have been fairly civil and informative. But, the administrators of this site have very good reasons to keeping the 'catholic' discussions contained in the RCC forum and their wishes need to respected.

Since the current questions regarding Catholism have been answered by biblecatholic, I'm going to ask nicely to direct any further questions, answers, or repsonses to answers specific to Catholic doctrine or tradition to the appropriate thread in the RCC forum.

So, stand back everyone! I've got my finger on my edit button and I'm not afraid to use it! :smt066

Other questions, such as pondering the meaning of verses, what it means to have something match up with the Word of God, or whether or not Peter will be in heaven are indeed 'religious' questions, and can stay.

Will Peter be in heaven? Nope, I don't think so. I don't think any of us will be in heaven!

Oh LMBO! I hear the swarm of hornets honing in on that one!

NEWS from back in 2003!

"Saint Peter Loses Keys to Heaven
A 13th-century statue of St. Peter has lost its right hand, which held the keys to heaven. The statue stands at the entrance to the grottoes under St. Peter's Basilica, where the Saint is supposed to be buried. Vatican officials first suspected vandalism in the the disappearance, but now believe that the hand was stolen.
(SF Gate, March 13, 2003)"

Sooo, ever since St. Peter lost his right hand, which held the keys to heaven. . .
HE WON"T BE ABLE TO GET IN WITHOUT THE KEYS TO OPEN THE GATE!
And so everyone will be, (as Bob Dylan said, ) "Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door" :P

.

Boy, if we really do have to stand before St. Peter at the pearly gates, can you just imagine when that guy who stole his hand stands there!

Now, here is a serious religious question that I keep thinking about and have never posed:

If Luther and Calvin were adherents to 'sola scriptura', why then did they write commentaries?
