Repentance has a variety of meanings in the old testament. In some places it
expresses regret and/or remorse, in other it means to reconsider, in others to
change one's mind, and in others to stop moving in one direction and change
course to alternative.
Repentance doesn't always indicate an error in judgment. For example; though
not explicitly expressed in words, God gave the people of Nineveh an ultimatum,
to wit; either straighten up or within forty days their city would be conquered. So
the people gave God a couple of options. His finger was on the button to effect their
ruin but Jonah's preaching saved the day.
Regret and remorse are sometimes assumed necessary components in the
forgiveness process. But upon examination of the text of 1John 1:8-10, it's readily
seen that transparency is the important factor; whereas repentance isn't even hinted.
