Salvation Basics - Eternal life

Brother, It is our understanding from the scriptures that: https://christianforums.net/threads/the-christian-goal-is-to-be-born-into-the-kingdom.101577/

I take this to mean that you are not aware of the fact that God gives birth to us by His Spirit when He comes to live in our hearts. And the link you provided indicates you believe it is earned at the end of a life well lived.

If I'm right, you'll probably object to the thread I just started -- Salvation Basics - Born of God

Knowing is a Hebrew term of intimacy. It's beautiful.

When we are joined to the LORD and are one spirit with Him, this is knowing Him.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 1 Corinthians 6:17
Are you a part of a denomination that teaches such things? If so, can you point me to some resources that may help me understand your background?

It does not make sense to say on one hand that we must have eternal life in order to be able to walk in the Spirit (which we are commanded to do here and now) and to say on the other hand that we do not gain eternal life until the end of our life on earth.
Yes in His Kingdom.

No denomination.

What things are you referring to?

I posted this scripture to show that "knowing" is mutual. I said this is response to your statement that said -

This passage in John makes no mention of us knowing Him.

I used parabolic imagery (earthly things) to make my point just as Jesus and Paul did. Knowing is not a one sided thing when we are joined to the LORD and one spirit with Him, it is a mutual knowing; joining as one is mutual.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 1 Corinthians 6:17

When we see the context Paul was referring to it's becomes more clear.

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:15-20

You said in another thread...

"using lexicons and the Strongs Concordance is permitted, especially when we get into defining and understanding biblical words and terms. That being said, we will strive to allow the biblical definition to take precedence."
Another user on the thread used very similar language in one of his posts...

I read, believe, teach, dispute by Scripture alone as the beginning and final say on how Bible words are defined. It's letting God define His own words by how He defines and uses them in Scripture.
Example: Wisdom is exactly defined by God:
Job 28:28And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
You and he make the same mistake. You both think when the Bible says "A" is "B" that it constitutes a definition, which of course it does not. And I wonder if you both being from the same city is a coincidence or if there is some sort of association between the two of you that teaches this sort of reasoning.

Can Eternal Life exist in the Second Death?

It's not eternal life as an eternal life with the Father, but that of an eternal torment in the sense of spending an eternal miserable existence being tormented day and night. Scripture never calls it an eternal life in the lake of fire, but that of damnation as the scenario would be that of the complete opposite of the eternal life with Christ. Existing is still life, whether it be a glorified life with Christ in the New Jerusalem or one of damnation and torment in the lake of fire as both are eternal.

Scripture never says what we will look like in the resurrection of life or damnation. Matthew 13:36-42 speaks about the tares being the children of the wicked one who would be Satan and says they will be cast into a furnace of fire where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Here dust + breath from God = a living soul. When the flesh dies physically it returns back to the dust of the ground and our spirit is preserved with God for final judgment.

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
1Co 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Mat 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
Mat 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
Mat 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Act 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

One can not compare eternal life with the Father with eternal damnation in the lake of fire except that the two are opposite from each other. Those who are resurrected to be with the Lord will have an eternal life (existence) basking in Gods glory within the New Jerusalem. Those who are cast in the lake of fire will not literally be consumed by an eternal literal fire as fire here means torment, destruction or as being destroyed or broken down like someone saying that we are going to destroy you and drag your name through the mud. They are not literally destroyed, but brought down to a lower level never remembered by God anymore. Those in the lake of fire will have an existence of weeping and gnashing of teeth for the destruction and torment they will face for eternity. Death means separation from God as their eternal destiny (life) is the lake of fire. If death here meant not to exist anymore than what would be the purpose of the second death and being resurrected to stand in the great white throne judgement. Couldn't God just make them vanish as if they never existed in the first place!

You keep saying death is an existence and if one is existing then it has to be some form of life. Not like the life we have now as being alive here on earth, not like eternal life with the Father, but yet a form of a tormented eternal life of existence in the lake of fire for eternity. We know flesh and blood can not inherit the kingdom of God and many will be alive when Christ returns. Those who have physically died in Christ will be changed in a twinkling of an eye to meet Him in the air just as we who are physically alive will be gathered with them, but yet we do not know physically what we will look like for many will be only dust in the ground when they are resurrected to be with the Lord forever. Those who have physically died and have no part of the inheritance also will be only dust in the ground depending how long they have been asleep (not talking about the false teaching of soul sleep), but yet will be transformed and meet those who are alive to stand before God in His great white throne judgment and will be cast into the lake of fire. There existence will be an eternal life of torment being separated from God forever. Scripture also calls it outer darkness and in my own minds eye I see it as not only being separated from God for ever, but like looking through a window in all their torment seeing that God does exist and they will never be a part of His glory. Eternal death is separation from God, but yet as we see in scripture they do exist in a tormented state forever as one has to have some form of life to exist even though it is not like the physical life we have now as all will be changed in a twinkling of an eye, but yet no one knows what anyone in Christ or those separated from Christ will look like.

God gives us a description as in fire and brimstone which can be used literal as in Sodom and Gomorrah burned to ashes and as a metaphor for torment, suffering, punishment or as Matthew 8:12 describes it as outer darkness. The New Testament description is a bottomless pit (abyss) (Revelation 20:3), a lake (Revelation 20:14), darkness (Matthew 25:30), death (Revelation 2:11), destruction (2 Thessalonians 1:9), everlasting torment (Revelation 20:10), a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30), and a place of gradated punishment (Matthew 11:20-24; Luke 12:47-48; Revelation 20:12-13), everlasting fire Matthew 25:41, everlasting punishment, Matthew 25:46, lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Ecc 9:5 for the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Psa 104:29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.
Dan 12:2 and many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
James 2:26 for as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

This body/flesh dies and deteriorates as it turns back to dust while in the ground. The breath/spirit goes back to God who gave it, Ecc 12:7. The soul which makes up the conscious part of ones being is that of thought, action and emotion. The spiritual nature of man regarded as immortal and separable from the body at death and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state.

Without the spirit/breath from God our soul would not be alive as spirit and soul are connected, Genesis 2:7. When we physically die our soul also dies as the breath goes back to God who gave it. 1Cor 15:51-54 speaks of the resurrection of the dead who are of Christ. They will not be raised from the grave in our old physical bodies, but will be changed into that likeness of Christ in all His glory

Death and Hades is the second death and are destroyed before the unrighteous are thrown into the lake of fire, Rev 20:13-15, as the sea, death and Hades gave up those who were asleep in the grave (righteous and unrighteous), 1Thess 4:13; John 5:28, 29, to stand in judgment as we will either stand in Jesus judgment (Bema) or the great white throne judgment. There will be no more need of death and Hades (Hell).

Reread Rev 20:13, 14 as it is death and Hades thrown into the lake of fire that is the second death, not the unrighteous being the second death as while they were delivered up for judgment death and Hades was being thrown into the lake of fire. Death is now taken out before the torment of the unrighteous begins.

Nowhere in scripture does it say physically what we will look like (righteous or unrighteous), but only descriptive as one will have eternal life with the Father and the other an eternal life of torment. It is not the life we have now in this physical body, but yet one that is conscious of its surroundings.

To understand what it is you need to read Rev 20:13-15 to know that death and Hades that is thrown into the lake of fire is the second death, not the unrighteous that are not found written in the Lambs book of life. Death and Hades (grave) has no more place as death is the result of sin, which is no more in the end and the strength of sin was the law as many fell into sin not able to keep all the law, but through the grace of God He gave us a way out of our sin through that of His son Christ Jesus that all could reconcile themselves back to the Father to stand sinless before Him.

1Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
1Corinthians 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

I guess you're replying to JLB's statements? I don't find much if anything to disagree with here.

This passage in John makes no mention of us knowing Him. It only mentions Him knowing us. And there are no prerequisites mentioned either. (Web definition of prerequisite: "a thing that is required as a prior condition for something else to happen or exist")

I disagree.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” Luke 1:31-34

In our relationship to the Lord we are joined with Him, and are one spirit with Him.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
1 Corinthians 6:17

When we are one spirit with Him, we are one spirit with the Spirit of life in Christ; thus we have eternal life… as long as we remain in Him.

What you are saying is in essence that if a man and woman are intimate in physical intercourse, that the man can “know” the woman without the woman “knowing” the man. :nono

When He says I know them, He is referring to being in Him, joined to Him; being one spirit with Him.

The “knowing” is mutual.

I disagree.

I can honestly say I have never heard anyone liken Jesus' words, "I know them", to sexual intercourse.

But to a certain degree I agree with the point that you are making that our intimate personal relationship with the Lord uniquely allows us to know Him. If you take out your references to sexual intercourse and replace the "as long as we remain in Him" comment with "being one spirit with Him means we are incorruptible by sin just as He is incorruptible", then we would be on the same page in terms of what it means for those who are joined to the Lord to be one spirit with Him.

I can honestly say I have never heard anyone liken Jesus' words, "I know them", to sexual intercourse.

Spiritual intercourse, nor physical intercourse.

One spirit… not one flesh.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
1 Corinthians 6:17

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
James 4:4

James is referring to spiritual adultery not physical adultery.
