Scripture Text:

11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Romans 13:11-14

Key Phrase: ...for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

Additional Scripture Text:

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:3-9

Key Phrase: ...receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

Additional Scripture Text:

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Hi JLB

I vote that salvation is for right now.

For Ephesians 2:8 which says that we ARE saved by grace and that it is a gift.
If I accept the gift, I have it now - not at some time in the future.

In the future I will receive the END of my faith- which will be the ETERNAL salvation of my soul. (heaven)

I also believe we are saved right now because of a verse you have posted above:
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,
Romans 13:14

This idea can also be found in
Galatians 3:27

If I am clothed with Christ, I am protected by Him for my salvation.

And lastly, if I cannot know I am saved, how can I possibly be joyful?
1 Peter 1:8

As always, you are thoughtful and insightful with your questions.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10

Key phrase: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God...

Two points here in this passage you referred to, I would like to touch on.

The verse says -

First point: Our faith is the key to accessing the grace, by which we are saved.

  • by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God...

You said -

I vote that salvation is for right now.
For Ephesians 2:8 which says that we ARE saved by grace and that it is a gift.

The verse indicates that our salvation is through faith.

I know we can both agree that it is by God's grace we are saved, however we must also understand that it is through our faith that we have access to His grace and salvation.

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2

... through whom also we have access by faith into this grace.

Second Point: Faith is the gift of God referred to in this verse. Faith is not of ourselves, but comes to us when we hear the Gospel message; The word of God, or as Paul says... the word of faith.

  • by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God...
When we hear God's word, we receive the faith that comes by hearing.

From that point, it is our choice to act in obedience or not, to what we have heard from God.

That's why Paul calls it the obedience of faith.

But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: Romans 16:26

Before we continue with the discussion of this topic, we need to agree on the basics of salvation and faith.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Here's the question for you.

Do you have faith in Jesus Christ for your salvation?

You absolutely can know that you are saved.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:16

He says it this way in Chapter 8 -

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God...For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Romans 8:24-25

When Paul says - we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees.

He quoting from the recipe of faith... hope... not seen.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for... the evidence of things not seen.

What is Paul waiting for with perseverance?

If I am clothed with Christ, I am protected by Him for my salvation.

Yes exactly. protected by Him for salvation... that you will receive at the end of your faith.

24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:24-29

yes. Of course JLB, It's as you say.
I understand all of Ephesians 2:8-10 and concur. I left out faith because I wanted to concentrate on God's grace and that salvation is a gift to be accepted and when it is, it is for NOW.
We have been saved by GRACE through FAITH. It's our faith that saves us. The same faith that saved those of the O.T. before Jesus' sacrifice. Hebrews chapter 11.

God's grace, after all, falls on everyone. If it did not, there would be no possibility of salvation since God would remain unknown to us. Jesus knocks on everyone's door... Revelation 3:20

Here's the question for you.

Do you have faith in Jesus Christ for your salvation?

The answer to the questions is: Yes.

Acts 4:12
12“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
We live in a society where the Word is available to us.
What if it weren't?
We can still have faith in God. We can still know there is a being greater than ourselves.
He is evident in nature, in the things seen.
Romans 1:19-20
Psalm 19:1
We may be able to include Romans 2:14-15

So, yes, you do have to hear about God somehow, so faith comes by hearing.
Faith can also come through nature. I'm sorry, it may not be faith, but the KNOWLEDGE of God.

The obedience of faith is new terminology for me.
IOW, we have heard the gospel, we accept, we have faith
Now, because of that faith, we obey.
Or, we obey that in which we have faith - in this case a person, Jesus.
Of course, this was always understood, but it was never called obedience of faith.
(unless it means something different from my explanation).

Key Phrase: ...for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
In what sense is our salvation "nearer"?

1. We have grown in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Christ may come for His saints at any time.

3. At the Resurrection/Rapture our salvation will be completed.

The answer to the questions is: Yes.

Acts 4:12
12“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
We live in a society where the Word is available to us.

I think you are confusing the word [Bible] with the word [voice; rhema] of God.

Faith comes by hearing the "rhema" [voice of God] word, not reading the bible [word].

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. Hebrews 11:8

There was no bible then, it was the Lord speaking to Abraham, and Abraham responding in faith, by obeying what he heard the Lord say.

When the Lord sends His Apostle Paul to preach the Gospel, the Spirit of God accompanies the message, in which the Gospel Message produces faith in those who hear. It is the believing response to the Gospel...[if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved], that brings about salvation by faith in Jesus Christ.

6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation...14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:6-10,14-17

JLB

But the scripture plainly says that faith is the gift of God, not that grace isn't a gift either.
In Eph 2:8,9, salvation is the gift, and faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Rom 10:17). At the same time the spiritual gift of faith (presumably extraordinary faith) is given to some along with other spiritual gifts. Strangely enough, one needs faith as little as a mustard seed to accomplish the impossible. It is not the volume of faith, but the Person in whom the faith is placed. All can believe the Gospel, if all choose to believe it. Some deliberately choose not to.

In what sense is our salvation "nearer"?

We are closer to the end of our faith.

We are closer to the return of Jesus Christ.

so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. Hebrews 9:28

Romans 8 is speaking about deliverance from bondage.
It's speaking about not being in the flesh,
but being in the spirit.
If the spirit who raised Christ is living in us, then we will also be raised.
We are children of God.
The sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that is to be revealed to us.

(that glory must be heaven?)
Even the creation is waiting eagerly.
And will also be set free.
(it will be set free at the end time)
(the redemption - glorification. Is this it? When we are at the end times our faith will be perfected.
2 Timothy 1:12
we will have our glorified body and the new earth will be established)

In Eph 2:8,9, salvation is the gift, and faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Rom 10:17)

Where does grace fit in? Is it a gift?

Salvation is the end result of faith.

No faith. No salvation.

What we are given is faith. We don't earn faith, faith is given by God when He speaks to us, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by God speaking to us.

The object, being last thing mentioned in the sentence construct, described as a gift, is faith.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9

So let's look at it this way, what comes first faith or being saved?

You will be saved, as long as you continue in the faith, and are not moved away from the hope of the Gospel.

21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister. Colossians 1:21-23

So as long as we continue to have faith, we will continue to be saved...by faith, until we receive the reality of the thing we are hoping for...

The salvation of our soul...receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls

What are you saying here:
Faith comes by hearing the "rhema" [voice of God] word, not reading the bible [word].

You said I'm confusing the two. Isn't the Word of God either of the two?
I could read the bible, the Word and receive it
or I could "hear" the Word of God - this to me would be equivalent to how I explained receiving faith through the perception of a superior being, as in Romans 1:19-20.
Or even actually hearing it as in preaching.

You said I'm confusing the two. Isn't the Word of God either of the two?

You worded that question very well.

I'm forced to answer: Yes

The word of God can be the rhema [spoken] and the logos [written].

Jesus is the Logos, the message of the old testament scriptures, that became flesh. [See Also, the Angel of the Lord]

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:10-14

The message of the old testament was Jesus.

The message [word] of the old testament, became the living breathing reality that the old testament scripture's foreshadowed.

Never the less, faith comes by hearing the rhema word of God. Romans 10:17

JLB

I could read the bible, the Word and receive it

Of course you could receive from the scriptures, and believe them, in which you would receive...correction, instruction in righteousness, reproof.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16

Yes, Jesus is salvation and would be coming to his house.

And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him,and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.6 So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”

9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:5-10
