Should Christians listen to trashy lyrics?

.

I avoid listening to secular music radio stations as much as possible. Not only is most secular music "depressing" most of it is "vulgar".

Not long ago I was in the company of this guy who had the radio in his car tuned in to one of the "popular" radio stations from around here and had old rock music along with the top 100 of today's tunes. A song was on that was so weird, the lyrics were so freaky. So, with a very shocked look on my face and with a very concerned tone in my voice I brought it to his attention and said, "What the heck type lryics are those? " (I don't remember the lyrics because I have since blocked out that garbage from my mind).
Anyway, his response was, "I don't know, I just listen to the music, I don't pay attention to the lyrics." :crazy And I said, "Don't you know that stuff goes into your mind subliminally?" He looked at me like I was the crazy one. :gah I said, "You should really pay attention to the lyrics of the songs and see what garbage they are putting out there." . I could tell he didn't like what I said, so I just dropped the subject.

I'll tell ya, it's tough getting through to people who walk around oblivious to what is really being thrown at us these days by the media! It's a sad situation. I just hope that one day it will finally hit him that YES, IT IS GARBAGE. Too many people these days think nothing of the garbage lyrics. They think nothing of the vulgarity that is being thrown at them as if it makes no difference. Then they wonder why their lives are so messed up and why they have problems with sexual sin and find themselves hangin out with people who do nothing but drink and throw wild parties. Blind. Just Blind and pure ignorance. The only thing left to do for people like that is to just pray that one day they finally see the light of what garbage it really is that is being fed into their minds.

It sure is.

Usually artists (term used reluctantly) use "edginess" to cover the fact that they have absolutely no talent. Rap music.. Nickelback.. And a lot of people fall for it.

I don't care at all for music with excessive cursing and lyrics about sex, drugs, money, etc. I avoid it like the plague.

I honestly don't really care for music with lyrics period.

"be careful little ears what you hear.."

"be careful little lips what you say.."

"it's a slow fade when you give yourself away.."

"a price will be paid when you give yourself away.."

"the journey from your minds to your hands is shorter that your thinking..""

:) :pray

That is a great song by one of my favorite bands. :clap :clap

Brian, I added the Youtube tags to your link so we all could watch it without navigating from the site.

We all need to use those tags more. It gives the threads an enhanced look when seeing an embedded video.

As for the question... no. :nono

Answer: no.

IN practice: harder than you think.

I think that many people out there really don't know or don't care what the lyrics of lots of songs are actually about. If you listen, you'll find that lots of lyrics are about love and sex and lust etc.
Don't they have anything better to think about?

No ,they truly think they don't. They do what the public thinks is cool. They go with the flow.

Plus, I listen to bottradio and my own cd's at work. All around me is country music(usually not too terrible, but some of it :crazy ), hard rock music, oldies, and popular music. I've had some complaints about my music. My only suggestion was we could ban music at work all together or let me be. :)

If they ever took the time to listen to my music instead of scoffing at it,well....

Christians should not listen to secular music, it isn't christlike.

although I agree we have to be careful with secular music, I think that to not listen to any at all is a bit over the top. Not all of it is evil.

I no longer have a desire to. I remember when I had a very dark and depressed season in my life being very attracted to darker lyrics, but when God lifted me out it I no longer wanted to even be reminded of that music. I love music, and I love to play music, but I want the lyrics to be based in truth. Another thought...when I am in the car, or at home, my children are also hearing what I am listening to...I want it to be beautiful, uplifiting, and I want it to bring glory to God before their eyes and ears. The Lord bless all of you.

No, i don't advise it either, but i believe God should lead his children to decide that, not man. Any thing of the world has some things in it that don't edify and each of us most choose on that, how can we witness if we isolate ourselves from the world. No one told me to stop listening to secular music, i felt the unction of God leading me that way.

What bothers me much more than "trashy" lyrics are good Christian lyrics being sung in a fast, light, non-serious way, a way which blasphemes and makes a mockery of some of the deep, heart-moving lyrics which men and women have written in the past when they were deeply touched by God.

Agreed. IMO, this is all a Romans 14 issue: what may cause you to stumble will not make me stumble; but I will not play my "secular" music around you if you fall in the former camp. ;)

no one pastor or other christian told me that secular music was bad i felt the unctioning of the Lord to do so, like one day i'll probably totally give up tv.
