Should Christians watch MTV?

Should Christians watch MTV with all the girls shakin' their butts in rap music videos? I tend to think it should be avoided.

I don't know what MTV is like in the USA, but in Australia it doesn't actually show music...I think that VH1 is related to MTV in some way, and that channel shows music, but the only thing on MTV is Laguna Beach, The Hills and various other non-entertaining programmes.

No, i haven't watched mtv since 1997, a year after my conversion. but we should relealize that we shouldn't be so heavenly minded that were no eathly good. As the say goes.

I'm not sure if MTV shows videos anymore. But no we should avoid those bad influences. Anything that separates us from the Lord. Including lustful thoughts. I stopped listening to rap a long time ago. I do listen to some conscious hip-hop.

Most music videos on MTV these days seem to be all rap. I avoid that kind of rap. I have some good Christian rap that I listen to. Sometimes I will listen to a few secular rappers with clean lyrics. But I don't listen to anything that talks about ladies shakin' their hips while trying on new lipsticks. :D

MTV is wall-to-wall immorality and obscenity. Absolute garbage.

Even before I was saved, I couldn't stomach MTV. Now, I pray for people who find any of those shows entertaining.

I'm a pretty tolerant guy, and even I think MTV should just be destroyed. The constant reality shows that are based on nothing more then humiliation, sex, and drama. Ugh.

That's what got me out of rap. Why is every rap song the same exact way? No, I don't want to see the girl shake that thang, or whatever it is she did to that. Imagine if those new Shaswam guy on the television had those girls. it's be weird

I don't think anyone needs to be watching MTV, let alone someone who claims to be living the Christian life. :yes

At the same time though, it's really hard to justify a Christian using the internet. Avenue Q put it bluntly:

"The Internet is for porn"

Jokes aside though, I haven't watch it in years. If it was about music, I would watch it. Instead, they should call it FRLTV (Fake Reality Life). I saw a show where these parents were tired of their child's relationship, so they went out in an attempt to break it up for a new person.

Funny, I remember MTV's popularity in the 80s and how the older crowd would say it was so bad. I would laugh at that. Now as I'm older I feel like they did (Yes, I feel old). The shows today are terrible!

A show about school pranks & the one show about the parents choosing their kids dates as their current boyfriend/girlfriend is rude and crude to their parents! Now a 16 & Pregnant show!

What are we teaching and influencing our children today?!

i was the same way and would even laugh at that. i loved to watched beavis and butthead and liquid television with aeon flux.

but now i call it mindless tv

I loved Beavis & Butthead too. I never really found them offensive, just stupid and funny. Like you said, mindless TV. But sometimes when life gets too heavy, that kind of thing is a nice break. :yes

Beavis and Butthead had some funny episodes. I did, however, find some of them to be disrespectful towards women. Like I said, some of it was good but most of it was not clean entertainment.

I don't think anyone should watch MTV and morality has nothing to do with it.
But what you say is a good reason too.

I've listened to a lot of good hip-hop, even non Christian hip-hop, but a lot of rap (esp. popular rap that they play on the radio) and, morals aside, is rubbish from a purely musical standpoint. Case in point: pretty much anything by Li'l Jon.

I think I've seen that. Is it where they get them to date another person and watch the date w/ the current S.O.? I forget what it's called.

MTV is pretty bland. Pop music has almost always catered to a lower common denominator. It's not a rap thing, it's just that only the lamest rap would get played on mtv. It's strange how they don't show guys shaking their butts, only women.
