should we avoid being rich and wealthy?

Well,he gave him crumbs from his table while he was eating a feast. That is not abusive?

Kathi, I agree with you. There would be no point in mentioning the poor man problems and being right outside the rich man gate if it were not pertinent to the story.
If we compare it to the story of the good Samaritan the lesson is very similar.
Not only did the rich man not care for him in food, he allowed dogs to lick his wounds rather than give him medical care that he may be healed.
Maybe if the rich man had helped him return to good health he would no longer need to beg but could work and help someone else in need.

Talking money wise here.....Compared to how things were growing up i am rich... yet we have a mortgage . bills each month... the normal i bet.... I dont think it is about how much money we have but how we use it.. How did we get it... No sin in earning an honest dollar.. I dont think Jesus would have use this example if the idea of it was some how wrong... I am guessing the guy that owns this site is rich compared to me, but compared to The Donald ? i doubt it. I am thankful for this wonderful use of his money...

Here is the parable;
Mat 25:14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods
Mat 25:15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
Mat 25:16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
Mat 25:17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
Mat 25:18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
Mat 25:19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
Mat 25:20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
Mat 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Mat 25:22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
Mat 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Mat 25:24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
Mat 25:25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
Mat 25:26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
Mat 25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
Mat 25:28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
Mat 25:29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

Actually it says the beggar desired to fed with the crumbs...

This seems to say, he didn't even expect to receive the crumbs, but desired to at least be fed with them.

I think I agree with your take on this, I would have to say the rich man, in his abundance, neglected Lazarus in his hardship, right outside the rich mans gate.

This scripture comes to mind -

41 Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;
Matthew 25:41-42
Well,I guess the crumbs are better than starving to death. But if it were you would you rather have a huge feast or a few crumbs off the table?

Exactly. What is the point of the rich man and God trying to tell us what happens when you live this kind of life?

After some series of conversations with some friends some of them are of the opinion that they don't want to be rich...or in fact very rich. It is as if it is a crime against GOD to be rich.

Yeah you should totally avoid being rich. It's a sin. The best thing you can do is to send all your money and your possession to me, so they will no longer stand between you and God. I will, in an act of loving self-sacrifice, take care of those demonic evil earthly possession.

:biggrin2

Here is some food for thought.

And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? Luke 16:9-11

if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

The stepping stone to receiving true riches, is being faithful with money.

Perhaps if I can come up with my own parable...

Suppose I strapped on you a 50-lb weight belt, the kind that scuba divers use. But instead of lead, the weights are made of solid gold. Then I threw you overboard from a ship, with your only chance of survival swimming to shore a mile away. How many people would release the belt, allowing it to drop to the bottom of the ocean never to be seen again, in order to give themself the best chance of survival? And how many people would refuse to release the belt, even as they finally sank into the ocean depths, preferring to drown rather than give up all that money?
I'd release it.

I'd release it.

Good for you! Now if a few others could release their own belts, I think it would make the Lord very happy.

No offense, but I'm a little bit shocked to see so many Christians rationalizing their love of money. I have a feeling I'm not going to be a very popular member here.

i would but i might have the caveat of one must become a consertive /libertarian. or i might attach some other device that tends to cause a loud bang.

Gaz how do you line this up with how prosperity teachers suggesting Jesus wants us all to be rich ?

There is nothing in scripture that would suggest a wealthy lifestyle is something to be desired. Quite the opposite actually.

Prosperity teachers are living examples of the blind leading the blind.
.

rich is a perspective. compared to the age my parents were at the time i purchased a home. i have more wealth then they did. does that make me a sinner? sometimes a small amount of wealth or things can be a hindrance

Hm sounds like you are trying to bribe/ extort me into selling my political soul.
That's probably even more sinfull than being rich. :biggrin2 Is that your response to my kind and selfless offer of relieving you of your earthly burdens?

Well, good then! I do think you're a likable bunch. I've never really had much problem voicing my opinions. ;)

I love hearing people opinions, they've been known to change my own.
So march on, Christian soldier.
