Should we interpret the Bible as literal?

What do you think and why?
as a rule I take into the account of the Hebrew culture in their day and also the Greco roman world and thought with the statements from the tanach and the rest of the bible. Christians stole words from the greek that didn't meant what they do to Christians. ie hades, agape and other words. the greek culture rarely used the word agape. hades is different in that is not sheol fully.

Joh_1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Joh_7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Rev_13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

1. taking words in their usual or most basic sense without metaphor or exaggeration.
"dreadful in its literal sense, full of dread"

Jesus used many non literal devices to make a point. He's quite the Poet.

Taking the Bible literally is the only way to know what God is trying to tell us.Many people today are going on their own definition to interpret the verses of Scripture. This is not what God intended 2 Timothy 2:15.Our Lord Jesus Christ took the Bible literally.Yes,their are figures of speech in Scripture but those are obvious. When we make ourselves the final authority of which parts of the Bible are to be interpreted literally,we elevate ourselves above God.
The Bible is God's world to us,He meant it to be literal and compete.

Have you seen the debate over Luke 16 recently :biggrin

uhm honestly, both futurist, preterists and theistic evolutionist do that with his word.

ie the theistic evolutions takes day(yom) and says its age when any Hebrew scholar says in context its not. the futurist doesn't take the words of jesus literally when he says YOU standing here shall not see death till the son of man comes. the preterist does it when he tries to fit what cant be taken as an idiom, or literally and does that with the 1000 years.

I have watched men argue hell from luke 16 and I tell them and others agree and have said it as well that luke 16 isn't about hell but sheol/hades. to take that as hell takes it out of the context of jewish teachings that the Hebrews teach. jesus used there view of sheol to show them what he thought of them. it wasn't about hell, gehenna is what hell is. Hebrews do teach about gehenna. its never to be confused with sheol. though sheol has that aspect in the lowest levels.

I think it is dangerous to speculate what Scripture means.

All I know is, as long as I keep acknowledging the God of Israel as the One True God and keep treating people the way I want to be treated, I should be ok.

And the word of God is not important?

ok, so if I really posted the questions I have to a good friend and my chaplain whom is a pre tribber about his and mine position its bad to speculate? really. much of what is end times is just that. I say this often.
if you have read genesis right but don't know how god did it, and if you read revalation and don't understand it right but know that god is coming back for his then you have the gist of the bible down
I could go into the myraids of speculation on end times. how god created man and so forth. the bible doesn't say much on the later and some of the former. I know many men whom teach this in my church and elsewhere
American must fall so that the antichrist must come
I stumped an elder with, well not exactly. American didn't support isreal militarily until after the six day war. france did all that. French jets took down Russian jets. and I also said where is America by name in revalation?

I don't think the Bible has any position on Pre-trib or Post-trib.God has given us Scripture to read and understand.

I think it's ok to speculate as long as that speculation isn't being passed off as the final truth.

That is the word of God. :biggrin2

"There is no other commandment greater than these." Mark 12:31

um mid trib? and partial preterism, aka orthodox preterism. and also historicism. I would be partial preterism. the more one studies this the more one learns and I have found much from the torah in revalation. the torah points to jesus. isn't that what that book is really about.

apokolyspos deulos iosou . greek for the revalation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
