Hi there Classik. Head coverings huh? O my, what a topic in this day and age. The Christian Church of today, and it's leaders, mostly see head coverings, long dresses & skirts, covered arms etc, etc. as archaic and legalistic. I have found that in the "Brethren circles" mostly it's the men who insist on head coverings, not the women.
For about three years, back yonder, I fellowshipped with a Brethren group. My Daughter (Peggy) and her Husband (Doug) were a part of that group. My Daughter and her three girls all wore head coverings. Plus they had long hair. About ten years later, they bought a farm in central Maine, fellowshipped with a small group of Brethren near their farm.
As the girls got older Peggy & Doug felt the need for their children, 3 girls, and 2 boys to attend a larger Baptist Church in Bangor near them. That Baptist Church didn't believe in head coverings and for several months they felt that they were drawing attention to themselves which was not good. Peggy decided not to wear the head covering, and two of the three girls followed their Mother. One Daughter still wears her head covering because she and her Husband still attend a Brethren Assembly.
Peggy is convinced that their long hair is a covering and the girls agree.
So would you assume that if a woman has no hair, she should be shorn?1Co 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
.... It is believed that not only was the Oracle demon possessed but her followers as well. Their Salvation evicted their possession, but did not rid them of oppression. These followers would remain easy targets for demons to mess with if they didn't have a covering on her head showing her head was under the authority of a man, her Pastor, and later her husband..1Corinthians 11:10 "That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels."
What's covering? Why not just take scripture as it says, a womans long hair is her covering.
ThanksA lot of folk don't know why this head covering thing was so important to the Church at Corinth. Across the the Gulf of Corinth, to Greece. There are many ancient and modern stories about the Oracle (Pythia was her name). It seems that the most credible was that Pythia was the priestess of Delphi at the temple of Apollo in Greece.... Pythia was a figure of great historical importance that was, and still is, shrouded in mystery. She spoke for the god Apollo and answered questions for the Greeks. (Wikipedia)
She would suspend herself over a chasm and would deliver oracles in a frenzied state induced by vapors rising from the chasm in the cave like opening. The interesting fact that effected Corinth was that Pythia, the Oracle, was bald, and all her disciples (learners) were bald as well. Now, thru the spread of the Gospel in Greece, some of the Delphi's followers were getting saved and moving to Corinth and joining with the church there. Remember, they were Bald!
This is the only reason for this teaching of Paul's that I can remember. Because these bald women were receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit, they began to prophesy, and that was not allowed because they did not have a covering (long hair) to show submission to husbands or their male Pastor. Therefore the head covering came into existence to show that submission which was necessary in the first century Church of Christ Jesus.
Are head coverings necessary now? NO. The conditions now are different from the first century Corinth. Remember, to my knowledge, head coverings were not the norm in the other Churches because they didn't have bald women joining themselves to those Assemblies, just Corinth.
Additional note. Classik questioned this........ It is believed that not only was the Oracle demon possessed but her followers as well. Their Salvation evicted their possession, but did not rid them of oppression. These followers would remain easy targets for demons to mess with if they didn't have a covering on her head showing her head was under the authority of a man, her Pastor, and later her husband.
I hope this helps.
Love You All,
Chopper
Yes it is true that my statement was wrongly worded as a blanket statement. I apologize for that....One comment about the wearing of hoodies, I don't think anyone is able to make a blanket judgment. If that's how they see the wearing of a hoodie, perhaps that information is self taught. Otherwise, no one is able to blanket judge anyone else.Just my view as at times I wear a hoodie. And I am a Christian.
Very kind of you. Blessings.Yes it is true that my statement was wrongly worded as a blanket statement. I apologize for that.
