Truthfully? I honestly think that some men are more than a little fearful that if other men see their wives as attractive women..... then possibly their wives might take a longer look at THEM (their husbands), and begin to see them for only what the husbands, themselves, think they are.

It's the same old fear of not being good enough that we drag into our understanding of how we have to measure up for God.

If a woman (or a man likewise) neglect themselves and do no longer take care of their appearance and health it would probably not serve their marriage.
Because no matter how spiritual we think we are, physical attraction does play a role in romantic love.
I admit it would bother me if I'd get married to an attractive looking man who after being married starts gaining weight fast or neglects hygiene.
So I don't blame any man who says he wants his wife to look attractive. That doesn't necessarily mean top styling all the time and no wrinkles allowed, but there is a certain minimum baseline and it's not a very loving spouse thing to let oneself go and then use some proverb quote to justify it.
