Smoking. Here's the deal...

Recently these pictures of Matthew Perry caught my eye:
View attachment 2458

In the pictures he is smoking. This puts me in two differet minds. One the one hand I love Matthew Perry so much, but at the same time....

... SMOKING?

Are you serious, Matthew Perry? SMOKING? As a Catholic I can't understand this. It's not natural. It's harmful. It's not natural and if cigarettes existed in the Bible era then it would have been forbidden for sure. I still love him as an actor, and Three To Tango is still definitely my favourite movie, but I'm not sure if I can still love him as a person.

Does anybody in this have this problem? Your religion getting in the way of your opinions and your hobbies? I have it all the time and it's bringing me down. I have also heard about the rumours that he smoked cannabis, but I know this can't be true about Matthew. He doesn't want to hurt anybody, he's a nice guy and he knows cannabis is wrong I'm sure.

i dont like tobacco at all it smells gross and i just hate it.

weed/pot/cannabis whatever you want to call it, to me is fine. they use it in medicine for medical purposes. and even recreational its better for you then alcohol. i see more pros to it than cons. but this may be because of the generation im in

i re read this and had a few issues. for one tobacco is natural it grows out of the grown so does weed. im pretty sure people in the middle east have been smoking tobacco for years. they smoke it out of a water pipe called a Hookah.

you said he didnt smoke cannabis because he didnt want to hurt anyone. you clearly havent studied weed. (i have in health classes) for one you get really calm and peaceful when you smoke weed so you cant hurt anybody because its pretty impossible to get mad when you smoke it. also cannabis is a plant that comes out of the earth, so it is natural as well. i think you need to read up on some stuff.

DO NOT promote recreational drug use. This comes up now and then, and we have to put a stop to it. I hope that's all I have to say about that.

i hope you didnt think i was promoting it :sad!!!!!
i was just stating some stuff that i knew about it! no promotion from me at all

Katy Perry smokes too, honestly most celebrities in Hollywood do, even those you wouldn't expect (Taylor Momsen, Miley Cyrus, etc.)

It's really gross, but in the end there's not much you can do about it. People really shouldn't be using them as role models anyhow.

Good. I'm glad to hear that, because it did sound like you were. Pot is illegal where most of us, if not all of us, live. And drugs wreck lives.

As for smoking cigarettes, :verysick

i could see where it would seem like it. i was meaning that its better for you as a recreational use than alcohol. thats jmo but no i dont condone it especially if its illegal

Seriously, you're not able to love someone as a person if they smoke?

I can love someone who smokes because I'm from the generation where most people smoked and my mom, dad, and two of the four grandparents smoked, as well as most of my aunts, uncles, teachers, parents of friends, etc... I loved many people who smoked.

But, I could never fall in love with someone who smokes... This came up several times when I was single. As soon as I found out someone was a smoker, that killed any thoughts of possible romance with them. Friends, yeah... but never anything more than that... what's known as a "deal breaker"....

That's understandable, we all have our deal breakers. But how could one not be able to love someone (not in the romantic sense) just because of a particular habit? The OP says that she no longer cares for Matthew Perry because he smokes; not because of some character flaw, but because of a habit. That just seems so superficial.

well in general i have never been able to deal with women who drink even if its a moderate drinker. nor could i deal with a tree hugger. alas my wife has leaned towards this route lately.:grumpy

I grew up around smoking--lots of relatives smoked, including my biological father, so I don't tend to think of it as a big deal even though I disagree with it.

I understand being disappointed in someone you look/ed up to, though. As pointed out, Hollywood stars are rarely good role models. Unfortunate, but true.

I think that peer pressure for social smoking should not be underestimated. This is especially intense among huge numbers of young women and girls, I think.

Then again, she isn't rejecting Matthew Perry... not really. Just her ideal of him... which is someone who is largely imagination in the first place, as all celebrity crushes are... I had to juggle my own celebrity crush on David Duchovny (back in my single days) with the fact that he gave voice overs in a soft-core rated R show... sigh... I could see how a pic of him smoking would kill her crush...

As for someone real... (for instance if she knows Perry and has been close to him for a while) ...then yeah, it's a little harsh to stop loving on the basis of his smoking.... gee, I'd have to stop loving my brother, my father (now deceased), a number of friends...

Still wouldn't pursue a relationship with a smoker though...

questdriven:

I gave up smoking; and if you've never tried it, maybe there's no need even to start, either. If you did try it, no need to get knotted up about it, either. There are some really strict churches where not smoking is regarded almost as supposed proof of eternal life, and this is over the top, too. And some people think it's okay for men to smoke, but not for women (work that one out :) ! )

But it's probably very sensible to avoid it altogether.

Blessings.

As to smoking, it's a deal breaker for me. I have NO intention of sharing my life with someone bent on their own destruction. Besides, it's expensive and filthy AND I don't want to take care of an elderly wife who is ill because she breathed thru a cigarette for 30 years. :grumpy

As to all drug use - drug users are idiots. I have nothing in common with idiots because I am not one. I've seen several of my high school friends (high school was in the 70's for me) throw their lives away on drug use. :shame

My home is a "No Losers Zone".

Weed did not stop my S-I-L from beating our daughter.... Arsenic is natural. asbestos is also natural.... Oleanders are a plant they will kill ya.

Back to the S-I-L Jesus fixed him! :)

I quit smoking June 17 1971. :yes

I smoked for about six months - quit in 1979 when a girl said she did not allow her boyfriends to smoke - and I was her boyfriend at the time! She broke my heart within weeks thereafter, but I never wanted to go back to smoking as she'd made a VERY good case about how harmful and stupid it is.

It was therefore, the best broken heart I ever had! She TOLD me I'd never forget her, and I have not. Even remember her FULL name to this day, 33 years later.

And her laugh.
And her perfume.
And her smile.
And her swimsuit.
And... (well, I'll stop there BEFORE the banning. :D )

Hi reba:

So did you quit "for religious reasons"?

or was it simply that you thought it was the sensible and appropriate thing for YOU to do?

(I think you can see what I mean.)

Blessings.
