So long, and God bless to Andy Griffith

I'm usually not terribly moved by the passing of our movie and television icons, but I am at the news that Andy Griffith has passed.

Growing up, he reminded me of my dad. My dad was kind of a mix of him, Charlton Heston, and Fred MacMurray.

Thank you Andy Griffith for your life and work, and may you rest in peace.

Man, that's a bummer. This is the first I've heard about it. I used to watch the Andy Griffith Show all the time after I got home from school. Barney really cracked me up!

End of an era. :sad

Barney really cracked me up!
Andy was interviewed sometime in the 90's, and was asked about how it all came about. Now, Andy had already made a name for himself as what WE would call a "stand up comic". Well, he told the interviewer something like this, this is NOT a direct quote:

We had done less than three rehearsals (that is, for three different episodes), and it occurred to me that I had to let Don go, I had to play the strait man to his funny character.

The writers (and I think both Don and Andy wrote a lot of the scripts) were advised of what Andy realized. Andy indicated that they all saw it: Don would lead the show as the funny guy, and other cast members would take such roles as well, and Andy would be the more "normal" guy. It all made sense, because he was Sheriff and, in a lot of ways, the "leader" of the town.

I also liked Don in "Three's Company", and Andy in "Matlock".

I grew up on Andy and Barney, I am moved by Andy's passing. I still watch the Andy Griffith show and Mattlock, I was also sad when Barney passed.

The episode of the Andy Griffith Show on right now reminded me that at church when your mic stops working during praise and worship we say we got 'Fifed' in reference to when Barney joined the church choir and couldn't sing a lick so they turned his mic off and had someone else dubb their voice in over him. Lol, great stuff.

Wow, I was with my husband for most of the day yesterday and hadn't heard this... I'm moved as well, Andy Griffith was like the dad everybody wished they had or could be.

I'm surprised, and yet I'm not surprised, that others are taken back by this, too.

I truly am moved by his passing.

Television's finest innocence was and is, "The Andy Griffith Show".

I don't think they ever went below the belt to get a laugh. And to me that's true comedic talent. Anybody can go below the belt to get a laugh. Not much genius required to do that. I've been sitting here at my computer with Andy Griffith on TVland and I'm literally laughing out loud at some of this stuff. This is great stuff. It's really clever comedy, and appeals to the goodness of human relationships.

Uh oh! Watching TVland and Opie just killed the mama bird. This is where, IMO, the character Andy Taylor shines at his best. My favorite episode as I said.

Authentic. The real deal. I've never heard anything to suggest his personal life was very different from his on-screen personalities. Certainly he had his sins, his flaws, but he distinguished himself from others in his profession his entire career. I wonder if Andy Griffith would be given a chance today.

That's a true piece of Americana; the one many of us wish we could go back to.

I'm a 90's kid and I've seen probably like 80% of the Andy Griffith Show, if not more. Used to watch it all the time.

Remember when Don Knotts (Barney) died a few years ago. =/
