Solomon's wisdom

The wisdom of Solomon. He is our example for we too should ask for wisdom and knowledge, not worldly things but spiritual riches.....

  • 11 Chronicles 1:9-10 Now, O LORD God, let Thy promise unto David my father be established: for Thou hast made me king over a People like the dust of the earth in multitude. Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this People; for who can judge this Thy People, that is so great?"

1:11-12 And God said to Solomon, "Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge My People, over whom I have made thee king: Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like."

The wisdom that God gave Solomon is good. Where is his testimony about the better, the Lamb of God?

Good is useful in this life, but it does not have power over hell and death.

Only the better wisdom of God that is in Jesus Christ has the keys of hell and death. Jesus our Lord did not despise Solomon. Jesus simply said:Matt 12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. KJV

1 Cor 1:24
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. KJV

The good in the wisdom God spoke through Solomon lead the children of Jesus to repentance. The good God spoke through Moses leads the children of Jesus to repentance.

Rom 2:4
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? KJV

The kingdom of God that is given unto us in Jesus is better than good. Jesus has the keys of hell and death through his blood and water that flowed from his side.

Our hearts are sprinkled from an evil conscience by his blood. Our bodies are washed in the pure water of his word, making us a living sacrifice unto our God, the Father.

Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. That is 1000 women.

Good morning Joe, :)

I see the "wisdom and knowledge" we should ask for being the knowledge of Jesus. It all concerns Him. It all leads to Him. Solomon's request was an example for us to follow.

  • "Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself,

:lol I guess most men would ask....how smart is it to have more than one wife? :crazy

There is a deeper lesson in the verse about his wives. Biblically the number seven means....spiritual perfection. Solomon, is both a type of Christ and a type of anti christ at different stages of his life.

In His role of Christ he is the husband of many, the number of whom is the spiritually perfect number...however many of us that may be. This same example is told in the story of Gideon, another type of Christ. The types given in the Bible are fascinating for the same story is told over and over with differing players. All literally happened but all speak of a future event.

  • Judges 8:30-31 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

The son of the concubine is not counted in the seventy, the "threescore and ten sons"...the "begotten sons." Those seventy begotten sons, "of his body," are the very elect, the man child. The son of the concubine, Abimelech is the type for the antichrist.

I'm going to far into this and apologize. I just wanted you to see there is a much deeper lesson being taught in the wives and concubines of Solomon and Gideon.

This can't be literal...I mean I do believe everything I read in the Bible but this just can't be literal :toofunny

Perhaps these women just lived in his kingdom? :confused

Why so? Couldn't he have been with a different one every night? Just because it sounds extreme doesn't mean it just can't be true, gotta be careful there. :)

Because prophets can speak figuratively at times.

Absolutely, but Solomon's story is found in the historical accounts, not told in prophetic books. You have to look at the context of the passage, and the context of the book. :)

So can you explain what it means that Solomon was said to have 700 hundred wives and 300 concubines?

What does it mean? Well, if you're looking for a spiritual meaning there I'm sure one could be found. But that isn't the purpose of the historical texts. They mean what they say. I think sometimes we can try to overspiritualize certain parts of the Bible. Yes, the entire Bible is good for teaching and edification, but when you break down the texts you must always understand what the author's intent was, and what it meant to the people for whom it was written. That has to be your starting point always.

So to answer your question, in my sincere opinion it means what it says....that he had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Now, when studying the life of Solomon you can take that fact (which it is) and make some applications about wisdom and idolatry and so forth, and that is very good to do. But literally, the passage means exactly that he had 700 wives and 300 concubines. It isn't an allegory, or hyperbole, or a metaphor, or anything else, and we know this because of the style of writing that it is and the intent of the author.

I hope I am making sense... :nod

  • Romans 12:4-5
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. KJV

    Luke 8:30
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion:
because many devils were entered into him. KJV

In Jesus Christ we are ONE body...The Anti-Christ is MANY, as in LEGION or Devils.

MANY...will come in My NAME...go not after them > Matthew 24:5 & Luke 21:1

  • 1 Kings 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old,
that his [many] wives turned away his heart after other gods:
and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God
    ,
as was the heart of David his father. KJV

:) Terrific points Ret....thank you.

Thank you too for pointing out the above verse for it demonstrates a warning to all of us....there is no "once saved always saved." We can, as Solomon, ask for wisdom of His Word and God can open Scripture but....as we mature, when we are "old" in His Word....our hearts can turn away. The concubines, the strange women.... the many coming "in His name" can turn us from Him.

I just noticed the following and thought I would mention it here....

  • 1 Kings 11:7-8 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

The "hill" was the mount of Olives also termed the "Mount of Corruption" in [2 Kings 23:13]. The site where Jesus ascended and...where He shall descend.
