Teenage Texting Romance

I'm posting this here to open it up for both parents of teens and teens as well. I'm curious. My son who's in 9th grade has had a few girlfriends, and currently he has one that looks a little more serious than the ones before.

All they do is text!! It's not like I'm complaining. Obviously from a dad's POV, less is more, and I'm good with that. But do teens, even ones in semi-serious relationships, not call each other anymore? Is this typical? You just text and don't care if you hear the other person's voice?

I thought maybe it was just because he was shy toward her, but I'm starting to think this is our new normal.
:screwloose

Yep, it is most definitely the new normal. My poor daughter is without a phone and therefore cannot text except via Facebook. We have been made to feel as if we have her in shackles or have her gagged. Poor thing. We're told at least several times a week how horrible her life is because we won't get her a phone with texting....a phone that is useless where we live since we don't have service out here, and she wouldn't be allowed to text during school. When she thinks she'd use it, I don't know.

As for texting "relationships", hey, there is a lot to be said for their fingers being too busy on the keypad and not...elsewhere! ;)

i have txted my wife some rather romantic stuff.

too bad she cant use that option. but that is a changin.

I keep reading things about how common that is among teens also.

"Sexting" Shockingly Common Among Teens - CBS News

In my home texting is not normal, simply because we do not have cell phones or texting ability.

My daughter's friend stayed the night one night and ALL night long her cell phone kept beeping. The next morning I off-handedly told her that her phone kept me awake all night, because I am the world's lightest sleeper, and every time it beeped I was awake. She said that it is common, and people are always messaging her all night long.

i dont send pics like they do in sexting, and teens arent alone in that. i know some adults that do that as well.

now i will admit too calling my wife and doing that, but i see nothing wrong with that as well were married.

can i not tell my wife what i find attractive in her. i doubt i'm not the only one.

if i had a teen do that, well the mma gym would have one boy and my daughter watching me tapping him out then they wouldnt be dating and she grounded from her phone.

Alright, it's early on, but I'd like to nip this in the bud. I'm not talking about texting friends or "sexting" :screwloose. I'm talking about teens who like (I mean "like like") each other. I would spend hours on the phone... all the time with my stomach in knots.:verysick

They're missing out on all that fun. :help

"Back in my day"... the only texting I did was on a scribbled paper: "Do you like John?" :)

I never said there was anything wrong with you and your wife doing that, so I don't understand why you got all defensive and went off like this.

sorry. i was explaining the difference tween me doing it and a teen. just forgot to add that in.

teens shouldnt be doing what i do.

but they do it. i did it the old fashioned way, over the phone.
