That above verse is for the future 'new heavens and a new earth' time, not for this present world before Jesus returns, nor for during Christ's future "thousand years" reign of Rev.20.
Prior... to the new heavens and a new earth time, there will be a "thousand years" reign by Lord Jesus and His elect over the nations, on earth, which will begin on the day of Jesus' future return.
And during that "thousand years" future reign by Lord Jesus, there WILL BE A LITERAL STONE TEMPLE or sanctuary, standing in the holy land here on earth for that 1,000 years. The Ezekiel 40 through 47 chapters are about that future 1,000 years temple Jesus will reign from. Its location on earth is even given in Ezekiel 47.
Then after the 1,000 years, THAT is when that above Rev.21:22 verse will apply, no more temple needed as the full GODHEAD will have returned to this earth, as Rev.21 also shows with the new Jerusalem descending from Heaven down to the earth.
SUMMARY:
1. Jesus' return on the last day of this present world.
2. Jesus and His elect reign over the nations with a "rod of iron" for the "thousand years" of Rev.20, with... a Millennial temple in the holy land, called God's House in the Book of Ezekiel.
3. Immediately after Jesus' "thousand years" reign is God's Great White Throne Judgment, and those names not found in the book of life are cast into the "lake of fire", along with Satan, death, and the abode of hell.
4. Then comes God's new heavens and a new earth, and no more need of that "thousand years" temple, for God and His Son will be The Temple thereof.
