The basic Bible Story

Hi Vic,

You mentioned the treasure to be found in the OT.

Well, yes, I guess there is. I normally just use it to refernce back to certain stories in the new testamnet. I have committed very little OT to memory, so it involves a long and laborious lookup processs, maybe that is why I don't go there much.....lazy.

I have heard that Judaism and Islam also will use the OT. I know nothing about those and womdered if you know if this is right or not. Or anybody?

Heh, so am I... lazy. :-D My studies in eschatology have thrust me into the OT. Like I have said in the past, there are things on the OT I may not have never even read otherwise. God is good.

Judaism IS the OT, especially the first five books, Psalms and Proverbs and I'm not sure what else. I would have to consult my Jewish coworkers. Islam, I believe, bases itself on Abraham and the Prophets, but Garybee would be a much better source on this.

I didn't know that. I assumed there would be other references as well. But I guess if they are still waiting for the Messiah it makes sense. Thanks

I PM'd Gary and hopefully he will clear up the Islam question. I don't mind sidetracking this thread for a moment. These are good, important questions. Understanding Christianity, Judaism and Islam (to a lesser extent) is important in understanding End Times, IMO.

Hi noble

Yes, Muslims TRY to use the OT to claim that it foretold of Muhammad. Why do they do this? They need to try and prove that Muhammad is foretold in the OT because of the verse 7:157 in the Quran.

Many attempts that have been made by Muslim writers over the years to try make particular prophecies fit Muhammad. The effort has generally arisen from a verse in the Qur'an which states that the coming of Muhammad was foretold in the Jewish and the Christian Scriptures. It reads:

  • Those who follow the Apostle, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures) - in the Law and the Gospel.
    Surah 7.157
It is not surprising, therefore, to find that Muslims have searched exhaustively through the "Law and the Gospel" (the Tawrat and the Injil, the Old and New Testaments respectively) for proof that these two books indeed contain prophecies of the coming of Muhammad. The Qur'an seems to suggest that these prophecies would be found in the Torah and the Gospel without much difficulty, but when Muslims have applied themselves to finding these alleged predictions, they have been unpleasantly surprised to discover that in these two books it is Jesus who is the subject of the many prophecies in them and not Muhammad.

Here is a complete index of rebuttals to the Muslim claims:
Are there Prophecies about Muhammad in the Bible?

I hope that helps.

Thanks Vic. However, I too rely on others for my information. This is an excellent very brief description on how Islam (and Muhammad in particular) saw the prophets and where he believed he fitted into that line.

PROPHETS

Muhammad believed that he is the seal of the prophets (See also SEAL OF THE PROPHETS). Since Muhammad sought to establish his credibility by placing himself in the tradition of the biblical prophets, it is important to investigate whether or not his life and message lines up with theirs: Mohammed the prophet versus the prophets. <---- Very good!

Muslims believe that prophets are truthful, trustworthy, intelligent, brave and do not commit sins, have no repulsive qualities, have nice voices and faces.

According to Tradition the prophets number 124,000. Their work is to teach and guide, like a preacher today. Among them are messengers (rasul), of whom Islam says there are 313. Each messenger comes with a book revealed particularly to him for the particular people. 25 of these are mentioned by name in the Qur'an. Once people are sent a prophet, they are responsible for their beliefs and no excuse will be accepted for not heeding the message, and it applies also to those which the message reaches in coming times.
