The Bible & Abortion

Being that there seems to be nothing explicitly stated in Scripture about abortion...

Harming an unborn via external blows to a pregnant woman seems very similar to harming an unborn using machines. What is the difference?

If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman... Exodus 21:22a NIV

With abortion there is the intent to kill, whereas the passage in Exodus is addressing unintentional harm to the unborn.

So if the Bible says accidentally killing an unborn is wrong, why would killing an unborn intentionally be okay?

Just to assist.

There were Levitical cities of refuge for those accused of murder. This includes those who intentionally killed an unborn child. IOW women sought refuge there too.

but...abortion happens, legal or not. Isn't the most humane thing to do keep it legal and regulated and safe?

Separate question. I was only considering whether the Bible says harming the unborn is right or wrong. Christians need to know that first, before considering how to approach the situation.

So does slavery, murder in the us.imagine the benefits of owning a personal slave.regulated by the government to have free housing, healthcare, education.no bodily harm,

Humane to the dead baby? Humane to the girl who is trying so hard to pretend she did not do what she did? ;Or do you mean humane to those gettting rich off the sin of murder?
Sex is most often a choice ... there are humane ways to not have to accept the responsibility of the sex act that do not kill the child...

If it were truly safe, from the World's point of view you might have "some" grounding there. The truth is that God loves and cares about all of the woman's being, even her mind and Abortion destroys more than the little human inside her.

Remember Daniel and the three hebrew boys didn't submit to the unlawful order given by the government. They knew this was sin against God.

Here's the real question Brothers and Sisters. IMO, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to comprehend that life begins at conception. That's prolly when the soul comes into the new life. Taking the first breath is an event, but I think the soul is already there.

The 64K dollar question is, how do we, as Christian Brothers and Sisters...not submit to this sin beyond not having an abortion?

One of the problems that I can see in the abortion-prolife debate is the misunderstanding
that the unborn child is not a person.
The fact is that unborn babies are people too!
There is both Biblical & Scientific proof of awareness in the womb.

There's a heck of a lot of testimonies circulating wherein one sees and meets an aborted or miscarried baby in heaven when they get their vision or visit to heaven.

Colton Burpo comes to mind. That little guy met his big sister and went home to tell mom about it. The mom and dad hadn't told the 3 year old that some years before that mom had a miscarriage, brings validity to the belief that life begins at conception. Otherwise, the big sister wouldn't be with Jesus, right?

It may not be biblical per se, but it does shine a light on the topic.

Excellent point Lewis.

Norman Geisler, in Christian Ethics (1989) gives this summary biblical evidence of

Foetus as fully human: Biblical arguments

1. Unborn babies are called “children,” the same word used of infants and young children (Luke 1:41, 44; 2:12, 16; Exodus 21:22), and sometimes even of adults (1 Kings 3:17).

2. The unborn are created by God (Psalm 139:13) just as God created Adam and Eve in his image (Genesis 1:27).

3. The life of the unborn is protected by the same punishment for injury or death (Ex. 21:22) as that of an adult (Gen. 9:6).

4. Christ was human (the God-man) from the point he was conceived in Mary’s womb (Matt. 1:20-21; Luke 1:26-27).

5. The image of God includes “male and female” (Gen. 1:27), but it is a scientific fact that maleness or femaleness (sex) is determined at the moment of conception.

6. Unborn children possess personal characteristics such as sin (Ps. 51:5) and joy that are distinctive of human beings.

7. Personal pronouns are used to describe unborn children (Jeremiah 1:5 LXX; Matt. 1:20-21) just as any other human being.

8. The unborn are said to be known intimately and personally by God as he would know any other person (Ps. 139:15-16; Jer. 1:5).

9. The unborn are even called by God before birth (Gen. 25:22-23; Judges. 13:2-7; Isaiah. 49:1, 5; Galatians 1:15).

10. Guilt from an abortion is experienced, therefore, because a person has broken the law of God (sinned), “You shall not murder” (Ex. 20:13; Matt. 5:21; 19:18; Romans 13:9). Forgiveness can be received through confession to Jesus Christ (1 John 1:9).

“Taken as a whole, these Scripture texts leave no doubt that an unborn child is just as much a person in God’s image as a little child or an adult is. They are created in God’s image from the very moment of conception, and their prenatal life is precious in God’s eyes and protected by his prohibition against murder” (Geisler 1989, p. 148) [from my article, Abortion and Life: A Christian Perspective].
