Bible Study The Bible

It varies from person to person .... some read one chapter per day, utilizing additional time for contemplation.

Average person? One year

grace:

In a non-stop marathon, skimming the verses, it can take 80 hours; but a year or so if digested slowly, I guess.

What is good to do is to balance reading in the Old and New Testaments.

My pastor, during services on 1 Jan, challenged everyone to read the bible. I took that literally and started reading 3 chapters a day and not skipping days. My gentleman joined me 3 or 4 days into it. We're on Amos now and I figure we'll finish towards of this next January.

That is so awesome!! I think it would be better to read it with someone else, so that you can disscuss and learn together.

John 3:16 is one of my most favorate scriptures going. HIS LOVE!!!!

gracelikerain:

Well, exactly; there is so much deep truth and theology in such a few words: God; our need of salvation, His love; and the Lord Jesus being the necessary bridge between sinners and God, and faith in Him being the key.

It's the Gospel encapsulated!

(I think it's good when young people learn texts from the Bible, especially ones like this, because they will probably never forget them.)

Blessings.

Yup, its been an interesting journey so far. He's read the bible entirely before a few times, he just decided to join me to show support. <grin>

The average person? They'd never finish. I think most people don't read much anymore. I think it would take the average reader a year, using one of those yearly reading plans. This is the way I've always done it. Using the 80 hour benchmark mentioned by farouk, I think it not unreasonable to expect to be able to read it in about 3 months, if you're dedicated.

I think it is important to read the whole Bible, and any Christian who has not done so should do so as soon as they can, however it is also very important that we linger on verses God brings to our attention. Meditate upon them. Pray upon them. So there will be times when we spend many hours on one passage and not make a whole lot of "mileage" in reading a lot of material.

Speculative:

I guess the 80 hours thing would be like the Indy500 versus Washington wintering at Valley Forge, if it's a matter of thinking and spending time in the Word.

Shortly after Lord Jesus first came into my life I took a leave of absence from work, borrowed some money from my sister and went camping in Colorado. It took me 3 months to read through my Grandmother's Bible, reading outside of my tent every day for about 4 hours a day.
