The biggest church in my city is a front for Satan?

The title's actually not as melodramatic as people might initially assume.

So, I'm reconciling myself with the fact that not all Christians are icky and have cooties, and I might have to attend a church with them semi-regularly. So I perform some due diligence on finding a home church here in my city (Toronto; as foreign cities go it's actually really fun!).

The top church, both in attendance and in prominence (as well as advertising, hands down) is Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship.

Unfortunately, I find out they're very famous for something called the "Toronto Blessing". An example of this can be found here, however I'd warn people that it is somewhat disturbing, although nothing that couldn't be shown on public television:

I really think this is Satan and not God's work. People acting like animals, crawling on the floor, being led around on a leash, and speaking in animal tongues? Yeah... not to mention the possible presence of an incubus demon.

So yeah, this is kind of why I'm worried about various denominations. This group has recruiters on all campuses and has a few different names. They're by far not the only church who come across to me as standing on very shaky doctrines.

A few people in my Bible study group go there and kind of creep me out.
What's a guy to do?

Yup TBN Benny Hinn etc I wouldn't go near that place... and i would try and remember

Php 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
Php 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I wonder if the leadership guys there are taking tangents they shouldn't with worship. freedom of worship in spirit is one thing but encouraging group silliness wont encourage church attendance unless visitors go to get a grin. :)

When God chimes in with people all glory goes to him. I didn't really feel that watching those guys.

You're right, the title is actually a fairly accurate summation of the facts.

Keep looking for a true Christian church. No, the Toronto Airport church isn't one and your spirit isn't leading you wrong... there's serious problems there.

But, Toronto is a fairly big place with plenty of decent churches... start visiting until you find one that seems to be a fit.

My therapist+spiritual mentor (a minister) told me once that, these days, all Christians should pray for discernment and use the discernment God gives them. I think you've done a fine job of "testing the spirits."

Now, all you have to do is find a church that follows the Bible and that will challenge you a bit.

lovely. anti-pentacostalism. not that i agree with the toronto blessing but there is a true gifts and uses of them. must be in balence of course.

You are wise to be worried. Caution is an attribute of the wise.

I hit something of the same hurdle some 30 odd years ago and it took a long time for me to work out what I needed to do. So I'll cut to the chase.

Most self-professing Christians have little idea of what it means to be Christian. They soak up what the 'front of house' says without thinking.

Get yourself enrolled in a recognized uni degree in Theology. This is the only way to go - to start at the beginning and work yourself through the study. Do it part time - by DE - by the internet - but do it.

Once you start your course you will quickly realize that most churches have corrupted the teaching of Jesus.

Pentecostalism is one thing; but speaking on "tongues" is obscenely overemphasized by some denominations, to the point of suggesting all true believers must do it as a mark of salvation. How it extends to emulating animals is beyond me. True gifts of tongues are real languages, not gibberish and not animal languages.

there is a tounge that is to be interpretated and paul states that one can speak in a language but to god. and no animal languages. that is satanic.

The woman at the end says, "He said, if I ask you, will you do it? He said if I can't ask you to do something in your own house, how ya' gonna do it out there?"

Some things really are better kept under a bushel.

Bizarre!

It's a good thing these kinds of cults stay small, and, thankfully, only a tragic few end with hundreds dead in a steamy jungle.

This is more like the God of the bible. No fancy gimmicks here. Just a plug for a ministry.
