I believe in Matthew 24:5 Jesus is saying that many people will come in his name claiming he is the Christ and will decieve many.

Lots of people seem to think this means there will be many false messiah's, people claiming they are a messiah, but there is not, there has only been a couple of nutcases who have acturally claimed to be some sort of saviour.

This is how I see the correct prophecy of Jesus, that many will claim to represent Jesus while decievng others. Many will come saying Jesus is the Christ and praise the Lord while decieving many. It's everywhere and there is many.

Jesus never said many will come in there own name and decieve many, or many will come claiming they are a christ and decieve many. Many will come in his name saying he is the Christ and decieve many.

Many will come in My name saying 'I am the Christ', and will decieve many.

Jesus said: Many will come in my name (Church/Pastor) saying I am the Christ (Jesus is Lord) and will decieve many (Enter crookedness here).

I believe this has been so since the Lord rose up to heaven. There were deceivers and false teachers working against the apostles teaching. There are many now. When the beast sits in the seat if will be horrific for he will make many claims. We need to read and study in a prayerful and holy manner. It is scary, but if we are in Christ we will come through it all.

After rereading that vs that I have read so many times I always took it to say many will come claiming they are Christ. There have been the nut cases claiming they are the Messiah, but now I see it how you have presented it. Thank you for this.

Tessa is correct (good initial post, kiwidan)....this has been going on since Jesus went up to Heaven. now...I dunno...it seems the organized church is in a fairly sad state, honestly. and its all over.

I would say that its different now, with the new age movement and such, but...nah. They had Gnosticism back then, and a lot of the new age movement and other anti-Christ movements, etc. are just reruns of older ideas.

and...since most of us are Protestants, we should be able to see how the church can claim Christ but be abused to prop up the gov't, oppression, empire-building, etc...that's what the RCC was all about during its hey day in Europe.

Even if you look at the other sources it's obvious. Mark, For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And Luke, many will come saying I am Christ and the time is near. Many have not come saying behold I am the messiah the time is near. Lol.

Of course many have come in Jesus name saying he is the Christ while decieving there church members with there false doctrine.
