The Derailing Thread

I think we were discussing why I'm online instead of being asleep, considering that it's nearly 5:30 AM.

The TOG

I only run out of gas in my car for the 2nd time this week, 3 time this month, and 5th time this year. The last time was today. Im winning.
I am totally paranoid about never running out of gas in my car.I fill the tank when it is still 1/4 full.

I've heard that there were approximately 3,000 derailments in 1980.
That number went down to 1,000 in 1986
In 2010 there were only 500 US train derailments.

Question: If the trend continues with the same rate of decline, in what year will there be zero derailments??

Not enough info the rate of decline in derailments isn't constant nor exponential. If I take the last 2 stats ~ 500 less derailments in 24 years can I say in 2034 there will be none ? Or do I need to use a percentile ?

If we look at the total, we see that the number of train derailments went down by 84% in 30 years. That means that in 2040 there will be 83 train derailments and in 2070 there will be 14 and in 2100 there will only be 2 train derailments. There will be less than 1 derailment by the year 2130. At the same time, the number of thread derailments is increasing in direct proportion to the number of threads on an ever growing number of Internet forums, so the total number of derailments is going up, not down, and will never reach zero derailments in a year.

There are three points given. We may determine the average slope and plot a line (or use linear regression). If we let 1980 be 0, then 1986 is 6 and 2010 is 30. These are the known X-Coordinates. The corresponding Y-coordinates are 3,000, 1,000 and 500 respectively. The question asks for the X-Intercept, where Y is zero.

And then when I plugged it in again just now (after having done that about three times prior), it suddenly worked again.

All that is near us we must know
Could disappear any day be careful
The main key to finding happiness
Lies nowhere else but in my soul

You could reminisce you could recall
The very last time you felt joy
Or maybe you are so blessed to a point
Where you can't remember anything

It's a harmony, a miracle
Being able to breathe and live at all
So here is your one and only chance
Life is an opportunity

All that is near us we must know
Could disappear any day be careful
The main key to finding happiness
Lies nowhere else but in my soul

You know the closer you get to something
The tougher it is to see it
And I’ll never take it for granted
Let's go!
