The Didache

The author of the OP asked me a question and I answered it.

The Didache states that they worshipped on The Lord's Day.

Some understand the Lord's Day to mean when Jesus returns, but it's obvious that the First day of the week is meant.

Also, what is meant by AFTER HAVING CONFESSED...

Chapter 14. Christian Assembly on the Lord's Day

But every Lord's day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord: In every place and time offer to me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, says the Lord, and my name is wonderful among the nations.

Didache: A New Translation and Messianic Jewish Commentary.

While there have been a plethora of commentaries on the Didache from Christian and even Jewish points of view, this is the first major work from a Messianic Jewish perspective. The Way of Life will benefit both Messianic Jews and Gentiles who desire to study the priorities and life of the earliest believers in Yeshua.

The Didache, also known as The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, is a brief anonymous early treatise, dated by most modern scholars to the first century. It provides a window into the faith and practice of the earliest Gentiles disciples and the instructions they received from the Jewish apostles.

The Didache was considered an early discipleship manual for those coming to faith—its wisdom and simplicity are still relevant for us today.

The Way of Life is a new complete translation of the text, with an extensive Messianic Jewish verse-by-verse commentary. It exposes a historic and authentic Messianic Jewish faith expression for Gentiles that accepted the yoke of the Messiah.

In 1880 Greek Orthodox archbishop Philotheos Bryennios rediscovered the Didache in a monastery in Istanbul. The Didache enjoyed wide circulation in the early church and some even considered it canonical. Numerous church writers mention the text but somewhere around the fifth century the work disappeared. So when Bishop Bryennios found the book in 1880, the Didache had been missing for about 1400 years.

The Didache picks up right where the Apostolic Decree leaves off, teaching and clarifying for Gentiles their relationship to the Torah and place in Messianic Judaism. It was written by the early Jewish believers in Yeshua and contains teaching that claims to have its origin with the twelve apostles.

Some scholars feel its earliest version might have been written as early as 50 CE, which places it within the first generation of disciples of Yeshua. It may even contain material older than many of Paul’s epistles and the Gospel of John. It also contains teachings of Yeshua that are not found in the canonical Gospels.

The Didache offers us an incredible window into the daily life of believers at a time when Christianity still functioned as a sect within Judaism and not a separate religion. It shows us practical life in early Messianic Judaism.

I like that the Didache shows that the early Christians were opposed to abortion:

Chapter 2. The Second Commandment: Grave Sin Forbidden. And the second commandment of the Teaching; You shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not commit pederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is born. You shall not covet the things of your neighbor, you shall not swear, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not speak evil, you shall bear no grudge. You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued, for to be double-tongued is a snare of death. Your speech shall not be false, nor empty, but fulfilled by deed. You shall not be covetous, nor rapacious, nor a hypocrite, nor evil disposed, nor haughty. You shall not take evil counsel against your neighbor. You shall not hate any man; but some you shall reprove, and concerning some you shall pray, and some you shall love more than your own life.

I have the parts. Like any work of man it has some things that are true mixed with lies.

Mary of course was not born without sin.

I do believe that Mary was a model of faith and charity.
There's not too much said about here in the bible, but other writings respect her and there is no negativity about her.

I can also accept the fact that Mary was born without the sin nature.
It only makes logical sense that God would want His Son to be in the womb of a perfect human being.
Revelation states that nothing unclean will enter into heaven.
Can the Son of God be made to dwell in something unclean for 9 months?
The Holy Spirit is the father of Jesus.
Jesus is human through Mary
and He is Divine through the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is immaculate,
the mother of our Lord must also be immaculate.

Eve was built a virgin also. By listening to the serpent, she and Adam brought forth disobedience and death to the human race.

Mary received faith and joy from God when the announcement was made to her.
She said the great YES.

Mary is certainly not the Mother of God.

I thought this through some time ago, and it creates a lot of problems if we want to say that Mary is not the mother of God.

The problem is due to the fact that when we say God we think of God Father. God Father does not have a mother.
But is Jesus God?
If Jesus is God then we must say that Mary is the mother of God,,,
otherwise where does that leave Jesus? Is He not God?
To whom did Mary give birth to?
A man?
A prophet?
or God incarnate?

Again many of the catholic people are precious and sincere, however the religion and teachings of catholicism are false and perverted, leading people into damnation.

You know that I don't believe that incorrect doctrine will lead persons to damnation.
Only disbelief and disobedience can do that.

Hi DDW
Yes. I like real books. You can't flip the pages of a computer!

I wouldn't say the Didache is Catholic or Jewish.
It's a writing of the very early church and what it believed.
It seems that the customs, rules, litergies, etc. were pretty well established which
would lead me to believe it was written to instruct the new Christians. I have a personal
belief that it was written before the destruction of Jerusalem - but I have no scholarly proof.

I believe it teaches that The Lord's Day is to be celebrated on the first day of the week, Sunday.
IMHO it also teaches that we are to behave a certain way - those that claim we are saved forever once we walk down an isle and accept Jesus as Savior (faith alone) are leading many astray. I don't find this idea in any early writing of the church.

No one should have anything negative to say about Mary, the mother of our Lord.

She is blessed.

However, more than that...

And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”
But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:27-28

It was, after all, Jesus' reason for being on earth.
He was saying the womb that bore Him is blessed.

But He was really hear to teach about God.
