The Difference

Hi there,

I think there is s place for both apologetics and evangelism. Peter cut straight to the chase after Pentecost, Paul used reason, literature and "pre evangelism" at Mars hill...
Exactly. Two different men, coming up with (conjuring) two distinctly different ways of presenting the same gospel.

The difference there is that of a “biblically” literate society versus a “biblically” illiterate one.

Two different men and one Spirit.

And similarly also the Spirit helps our weakness. For we do not know what we should pray as we ought-to, but the Spirit Himself intercedes-for us with inexpressible groanings.

When a Christian apologist defends her faith, she has a Helper.

Both Paul and Peter used Spirit fed and Spirit driven arguments. NOT man-conjured. Otherwise the Bible is not the word of God. It's a man-conjured book.

And there was never any question in the OP of two Apostles. The question asked was about the confused mess men have made of God's word by introducing all manner of haphazard "shotgun interpretations", claiming they are "apologetics."

What men try to pass off as defending God's word today, seldom is. It is no more than often just bolstering what are personal beliefs in religious dogma.

Is that the excuse offered today when two people face-off and go at one another, tooth & nail, in a supposed "Christian Debate?"

I'd have to say that witnessing and evangelism will certainly require a helper.
The Holy Spirit does many times give us the words to say, and also conforms them to the listener.

With apologetics, OTOH, I'd had to say that study is required. History has to be known. O.T. history, church history. Theology has to be known. When someone asks a question, which could be as easy as how the bible was put together, the answer would have had to be studied. If someone asks not about the resurrection but what makes us believe it, the answer does require some studying. Apologetics requires knowing answers.

Perhaps the trick is to separate defence of the truth of the Bible and of the foundations of faith from the defence of our sometimes flawed interpretations...

History has nothing to do with personal beliefs or interpretations.
I believe you're getting apologetics mixed up with bible study and theology.
Apologetics are a defense of our faith.
1 Peter 3:15

New American Standard Bible
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

That wasn’t in the OP either.

Kind of like what you’re doing here.

Apologetics requires knowing answers.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker not-needing-to-be-ashamed, cutting-straight the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=2 Timothy 2:15&version=DLNT

Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal— “ The Lord knows the ones being His” and “Let everyone naming the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness”.
...
But you, be continuing in the things which you learned and were convinced-of, knowing from whom you learned, and that from babyhood you have known the sacred writings being able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus!

Chessman, I'd say all of the above scripture has more to do with evangelization than with apologetics. Salvation usually comes from witnessing or evangelization.

Salvation comes from God.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One having caused us to be born-again according to His great mercy to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 1:3 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=1 Peter 1:3&version=DLNT

Showing yourself approved comes through diligently studying.
This is going off topic.
Of course salvation comes from God.
But how do we hear of it?
I was referring to this, of course.

To get back on topic...... If we really understood true Apologetics, I doubt the two could be separated.
