The Elder Was Way Off Base

I attended church today and one of our local elders preached on the topic, standing firm on God's word.

I think he made a grave error by stating that the Internet is the devil's tool.

Asking people to focus on God's word is good but making a point about the evils of Internet is so stupid.

Modern technology is good. What if there was no technology in making of computers, sewing machines, cars and telephones.

I think the fact that he may not be able to use the new technology is what has him upset.

I have a craft business where I am involved in crochet and embroidery and I can purchase most of my stuff from off the Internet.

I was able to purchase a piece of crochet software from Texas in the USA.
I only had to download it on my laptop, since it was sent through my email.

Of course there is pornography on the Internet, but it is also in the book stores. A person has to make the choice of either choosing to view what is appropriate, the same way they choose to purchase something in a bookstore.

No one can build character for us. Evil is everywhere and the internet is not the ONLY place where it can be found. People use their motor cars for sexual escapades will you not buy a car. The whole argument is just silly.

Sometimes religious people can become so idiotic in their reasoning that it makes me cringe.

With that kind of thinking would the Word ever have been written down?

Yup it can be ugly but i am so pleased to have this site.....

Its a lot easier to find Christian themed materials because of technology. And I can read blogs and listen to a number of wonderful podcasts because of the internet. I think the Elder was off base and short sighted. But isn't it true that so many years ago people just like him thought radio was a tool of the devil?

Technology is not evil in itself. How we use it on the other hand....

The internet is a tool. Nothing more and nothing less. How it is used depends entirely on the heart and intention of its users.

I told my husband years ago I never wanted a computer as I would have no use for one until we went to visit his mother and I started tinkering with hers and found so much Christian stuff in there and now he had to buy his own to use, LOL. Maybe you could introduce this Elder to one to show him it's not a demon in disguise.

I remember being taught that sin is a twisting out of the right way. In other words, sin must take something good and pervert ( twist out of the right way) it so that it becomes an instrument of sin. But it is down to the user. Granted, filth and what not is only a click away, but the person who wants to walk that path will walk it somewhere else if the net was taken away. And as for those who are tempted to sin through it, if they find that prayer and resistance is tough, they should consider putting the access in a less private area.

But to say the Internet is just a tool of evil is ridiculous.

I'm living on disability because of a long history of "mental illness." I am also quite shy. The internet has allowed me to grow in faith, post thoughts and experiences, and be challenged by other Christians. So, no...I don't think that, for a decent Christian, the internet is bad. Its just another tool that can be used for pursuing righteousness and encouraging others to do the same.

Plus, on the more prosaic end of things, you can use it to buy clothes, books, pay bills, manage your bank account, book trips, do research on whatever suits your fancy, so on and so forth. In my own life, the internet has allowed me to research supplements and set up a line up of vitamins that has restored my health.
