The Firmament Above Us

Do we still have a firmament above us or did it go away with the flood?
Is the firmament just another word for sky? What we look at outside?
Could the Van Allen belts be the firmament?

What do you think?
"Firmament" is a word, essentially, without meaning. From the wiki on it, which is reasonably referenced:
"""The word "firmament" is used to translate rāqîa‘ (רָקִ֫יעַ‎), a word used in Biblical Hebrew. It is derived from the root raqqə‘ (רָקַע), meaning "to beat or spread out", e.g., the process of making a dish by hammering thin a lump of metal."""

Any attempt to understand what is being described is going to fail. If you are interested in science go read books on science. If you want to learn about God and His plan for your life, read the Bible.

Plain and simple we aren't meant to know fully how God made it only that he did but I have not gone into how the jews see it.

Using a dictionary of another toungue is great but well trying to use that word is another ordeal. Context is needed.

Simple example shalom, it's hello, but so much, much more in the bible.

Why would you want me to separate science from the Word of God? The Bible is a science book too. In the very very first verse of the Bible, (Gen. 1:1) it begins speaking of time, space, and matter. So I'm really at a loss to see exactly what your point is?

Edward, just because the Bible mentions science does not make it a book about science. The Bible mentions prostitution too.....

It is hard to add to what ezrider said, but you are a bit right.

Let me restate myself, the Bible is NOT a science text. However, God did inspire the writers such that you can catch a glimpse of science in it. When I read Gen 1:1-3, and in fact the rest of Gen 1, and then read about the big bang theory - I do see some common ground. The idea of the universe suddenly "appearing" or "exploding into existence" is not confined just to early Genesis. No, a "sudden universe" is essentially what science and it's 'Big Bang' imply.

And, even science today can't explain "where it all came from" or "how it all happened" much better than Genesis does. The difference, is that Genesis does not attempt to explain it, where science does.

Let me be clear, God does not promise or owe me an explanation of how He did it. Nor does He attempt to explain it - and if you disagree with any of these three assertions of mine, I challenge you to show me where I am wrong. Remember what He said to Job?
Job 38:4 --- “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.

We can add God's lack of explanation of how He did it all, to all else He does not tell us. I have much greater questions than how He created the universe. Of course, I suspect that, once I get in front of Him, my questions won't matter to me anymore.

Well yeah, true that. But He gave us science and the ability to be able to figure some things out on our own, and this is science. But He also wrote the scriptures in such a way that He put a lot of stuff in there too that is related to science. And it will all lead man back to the creator. So it's not a science book par se, but it has plenty of science in it. Some's testable, some's not.

So, is everyone ready for me to re-post my diatribe on how the earth is both young and old at the same time - and that the argument is a waste of time? :poke

Well that is a simple answer. BY HIS WORD.

When the Lord declares it to be new, then it is new, no matter how old it may be.

This is God funnin' with us, giving us something to do.
Proverbs 25:2
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.../

Science has a lot of stuff right and have to be wrong about some things too. They hide some stuff too, truths. What probably happened is, Jesus first used His imagination and thought about it, then spoke...a big bang happened so to speak, and there it was, creative power, right out of His mouth.
