Bible Study The Marriage & Divorce Of Sin - A Mini Bible Study

This mini Bible Study will cover the Scriptures Romans 6:1 thru 8:17. It is my desire the the Holy Spirit of our mighty God the Father & His Son Jesus the Christ will guide us thru this very important teaching of how to have victory over being held prisoner to the law of sin and death.

The Apostle Paul makes a statement that we all echo, (KJV) "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" Since we all sin and come short of the glory of God, I believe we need to find the answer to how the law of sin effects us as the Apostle demonstrates the fight we all experience on a daily basis "I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate."

The Setting:
Romans 6:1 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

All Scripture that I present will be from the King James Version (KJV) unless otherwise noted.

Paul asks a question that I've asked myself ever since I was saved in November 1974. How can I, who is dead to sin, keep sinning?

Verse 4 says, "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? " Now, this is not just something good to read. This is a statement of almighty God (YHWH) a declaration of our position with Him thru our initial Baptism into the Family of God when we were saved by faith and the Grace Of God.

A declaration of God means it happened and nothing can change what God declares because He is Sovereign. Therefore my friends, it happened, it's true!! When we got saved we also died. Died to what? Died to our old way of living, the "old man" Dead is dead!!

Now, the initial Baptism that we had at Salvation was done by the Holy Spirit. By His supernatural power He made us a Child of our Heavenly Father. Then we were, and should be, Baptized by immersion in water. When we were Baptized in water, we went under the surface of the water thus identifying with Christ Jesus' burial under the ground when He died.

Folks, we died!! Death means no more living, none!! Ok, since we died, we can't sin anymore right? Doesn't that make sense? No more sin because now I'm dead. Good news though. Just as Jesus the Son of God was raised from being dead, the Father and the Holy Spirit together exercised great power in raising Jesus from the grave, and as soon as He broke the surface of the ground, He was in His new resurrected life.

Just as Jesus, once He broke thru the surface of the ground, like Jesus, we broke thru the surface of the water, and immediately we were in our new life.... 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Now, the above verse has a lot of teachers saying that all things are PASSING away and all things are BECOMING new. I reject that interpretation because it's an open invitation to keep on sinning until they reach a certain spiritual place where they are much more spiritual.

The Scripture, taken literally, is, old things are gone!! All things are new!! No excuses here our lives are new now, and our old life or old man passed away and is gone. Jesus didn't have a progressive new resurrected life, it didn't get new a little at a time, NO, it was new instantaneously, and so is ours.

Brothers and Sisters, we have to take out our excuses to sin. Notice again what this says....Romans 6:1 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

So that you can study for our next session, we will cover verses 5 - 11.

I have repeatedly given my testimony and then fellowshiping later, slippery questions always rise to the surface. People, the people called Faithful, seem not to be able to accept that any man can walk away from millions of dollars and absolutely certain fame.

That always leaves me reassured that the Barna Survey I oft use is true. When I felt the Holy Spirit enter into me, every single thing in my life changed. I had, as best I recall, 5 active girl friends, Pot under the mattress and a couple of bottles of whiskey.

In less than 8 hours the Spirit had moved me to get rid of it all and I did. I entered the Church on January 7, 1990 sans of netter than a hundred fans, four good friends and the two million dollar offer and contract to cut records.
Over and over I have had people sever relationships I tried to nourish and if they answer me at all, the reason always has to do with, "Nobody can be as holy as you are."

Sad! Like Paul I find myself doing something I hate and have repented of and must, once more, repent of it. And I SEE IT VERY CLEARLY! Repent is not being sorry, until the next time, repent means to turn and go that way no more. All of my holiness is summed up with, "I have been set apart, unto God." And there is no more than that.

Akin to these verses is Romans 12:1. But the problem is seen by Saved and Pretenderalike; Living Sacrifices keep getting up and walking away!" Paul had thisw problem and so do we all that are to live for the Christ!

Wow, the stories you could tell!
You meant 1974, right?
NAH! You should have seen him in his fist 70 Horse Harley Chariot! Fifty miles an hour past the Colosseum, his beard flfying overf his left shoulder and his hair flowing 4 foot behind him... what a sight to see! ;)

Seems it would us well to understand the bondage of Jewish way of life , of understanding sin and forgiveness. I do not see 'Jewish" sin as acts of the heart but of physical actions .
Jesus speaks a bit to this in this passage
Mat_5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
Mat_5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already
in his heart.
Dont take off on an adultery rabbit trail cuz i use this example
The Jewish laws were of stone in stone forgiveness so to speak was carried out on a stone altar. sprinkled with blood of some innocent.. .
We have the better High Priest.. we have the blessings of

Heb_10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
Our High Priest

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Heb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Paul pins here
1Co_15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
as Chopper quoted
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

That's quite a testimony old friend. Like you, I walked away from a Printing Co. that I started and haven't looked back. A New life. Some people dream of a new life and don't realize that Almighty God offers it in Christ Jesus. The contracts worth millions, the money I was making, these pale when we consider that in the New Jerusalem, just being there is worth more than we could ever amount to in this life apart from Christ.

So very true, my friend. The Lost, regardless of the title they present themselves as belonging to, I believe, will never understand Big Money and The Worlds Big Rewards are just as temporal as this entire world is. Those that have 'chosen' to live by faith are viewed in the same light as a game of Checkers with a missing Red Checker... one Checker short of a Game!

One cannot understand and grasp the Spiritual world because of the Temporal Rewards that Satan freely offers.

It's interesting how I view my past life of success. The Printing Company that I started was going to be my life long family business. I could not remember any one in my family who ever had a business that was passed down for future generations so I wanted to be the first.

My Son Skip was a teenager when I started the Company, and he really liked working with me in the shop. He was very good at running a few of my printing presses. We talked about him owning the business later on....Then I got saved. It wasn't long before I felt the call of God to go to Bible College to become a Pastor of one of His Churches. In almost a year, I was in College and my Son & Daughter were in Christian Academy on the same campus.

I have one regret about this. I feel bad because I promised my Son the Printing Co. As it turned out, I became the Pastor I trained for but my Son struggled thru several jobs until he, thru the gifts of carpentry that God gave him, he became a successful cabinet maker, remodeling kitchens etc.

Every once in a while I get a pang of remorse over this, but I know that just like Bill Taylor said, it's only temporary....
James 5:1 "Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
5:2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
5:3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days."

Both Skip and I know that this world is not our home. This life is not to be taken very seriously other than our relationship with Christ Jesus. Skip and I are just biding our time here on earth as pilgrims on a journey to our promised land the New Jerusalem. Once there, our Master Jesus will already have our occupation chosen for us in that new City of God not made with hands.

The contracts worth millions, the money I was making, these pale when we consider that in the New Jerusalem, just being there is worth more than we could ever amount to in this life apart from Christ.
That's right, Brother. There will be a heavenly mansion for every saint + an eternal inheritance for every saint, and neither of them can be compared to what's on earth. The earthly is always subject to corruption and decay, but as Peter says, the heavenly is eternal and incorruptible. For those who have served the Lord faithfully, there will also be rewards and crowns on top of that. God's grace and bounty have no limits!

Getting back to the topic, we literally died with Christ and rose again with Him. This is symbolized by believer's baptism (total immersion) so that those who have died to the old life are raised to walk "in newness of life" and "in the likeness of His resurrection" (Rom 6:4,5). In a nutshell, Christians have no excuse to keep on sinning.

The inherent inclination is that we are born with a sin nature, Psalms 51:5,6, as we were subjected to death because of the inherited sin from Adams transgression of Gods command. Now after the laws given to Moses by God death comes by inherent and inputed sin as violating the laws of God, Romans 5:13,14. Jesus is our propitiation for sin as He is our advocate before the Father that has paid the price for all our sin that we sin no more and are made righteous once again before God as He has made us righteous by His righteousness as we no longer are a slave to sin, but dead to it by the blood of Christ who washes us clean again as we repent and are made clean by His blood 1John 2:1,2; John 3:3-6; Romans 10:9,10.

Jesus paid the price for our sin as being His finished work on the cross and we through His life, death and resurrection have also risen with Him and set our affections on those things from above and not the things on the earth. We are dead to the flesh and are hid from it with Christ in God and when He appears then we will also appear with Him in glory, Colossians 3:1-4.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Do we as a child of God willfully sin, no, but when we stray from that straight and narrow path at times Jesus as our advocate before the Father will forgive us and set our feet on the right path again as the Holy Spirit will always convict us when we do sin. Grace pardons us and mercy loves us unconditionally. Grace does not give us a licensed to sin, but when we do miss the mark at times God is quick to forgive us.

Right on!! Brother Malachi. Christians have no excuse to keep on sinning. You know what scares me? This....Hebrews 10:26 "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins." Somehow, we all have to come to the point where we recognize this awful assault on God's Grace. At some point, a thread should be started about this to find a way to stop this....Maybe you Malachi? You've got the wisdom to word it correctly.

What is a heavenly mansion ?
The heavenly mansion being prepared for us is the new Jerusalem that will be ushered down at the end of days when God purifies the new heaven and new earth from sin, Rev 21.

What is a heavenly mansion ?
You will have to wait until you are in the New Jerusalem and in your own heavenly mansion, to see exactly what God has prepared for you. In the Greek NT the word used is monai which can be translated as *abodes* but was translated (with good reason) as *mansions*. (The words *manor* and *manse* are derived from the Greek). In a city composed of heavenly jewels and heavenly gold, nothing less than a mansion would be appropriate.

IMO I believe what Hebrews 10:26 means is that if we do willfully sin and having the knowledge of sin before we act on it the sacrifice which is Christ Jesus was only made once and never again and now Jesus being our advocate before the Father will always forgive us when we mess up, but we will pay whatever consequence here on earth that sin will bring about as our punishment.

Can any of us really say we are completely sin free as I know I do sin with my mouth if I yell at someone as I allow my emotions get the best of me at times when push comes to shove. I try to suppress what comes out and at times the words just slip out and then I do ask whoever the words are meant for to forgive me as I know God forgives me when I repent of the actions of my mouth. It doesn't mean I hate the person those words are meant for it's just the emotion of the situation that cause me to strike out in total frustration at times. My tongue is the hardest thing to tame, but I'm working on that with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Thank you Glory Girl for your reply and excellent reminder of how gracious our Heavenly Father is in forgiving our sins.

O my, the tongue. We all have a problem with that little member. James has a lot to say about the sins of the tongue. As you and James say, it's an unruly evil, who can tame it, no one!!
