If you want it to be manly then maybe play it without all the sissy protection gear? :p

"Sissy protection gear" huh? Have you seen some of the hits these guys take? Granted Rugby is a pretty dangerous sport, but the collisions that happen on the field in American Football can be career ending if they weren't wearing protection. Even with it some guys still end up with career ending injuries.

Rugby is hard but according to the one rugby player that I personally know rugby players have the same chances of getting injured as soccer players. So you can actually expect to leave the field alive and with your limbs in place. There are rules for what kind of moves are allowed to stop your opponent in ruby.
And in England Rugby is considered to be a "Gentleman's Game".
If American Football players would be forced to play without all the armour on them they'd probably automatically play less risky. So my theory is that the protective gear isn't a result of a violent game, but the violence of the game is a result of the protective gear.
