The Pure in Heart

RBDERRICK

Supporter
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.

The error of many Christians, such as myself for two decades of faith in Jesus, is not thinking Scripturally and Spiritually between faith and works of faith:

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

There is no faith before and apart from works of faith in God, because the first works Jesus speaks of is obedience in the heart: to purify our hearts and so call upon Him out of a pure heart.

God does not hear them calling upon Him out of an unclean heart of lust.

Our error is sincerely seeking to do His righteousness and love one another with all the heart, but we do so with hearts yet to be purified by us.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

When we take this Scripture serious enough to do it, then we are given power of God with His faith to purify our hearts from lust of the world and to cleanse our minds of thoughts for sins of the flesh, and so become sons of God as He calls us to be: Elect Saints in Christ Jesus.

To seek His righteousness first, we must first do so in the heart, to seek His purity of heart in ourselves:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Once we purify our hearts according to His word, then we can easily love Him with all the heart and one another with a pure heart fervently, and so the Scripture is fulfilled:

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Until we do so, doing His word is hard and seemingly impossible to do as written, even so far as deceiving many believers into thinking it is impossible to do so in all things in this life:

Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses.

They fail in the outward battle, because they have yet to fight the good fight inwardly, to destroy the law of sin and death in the heart and mind by the power of the law of the Spirit of Life: They are trying to fight the flesh with the will-power of the flesh and so never become the overcomers of all flesh, that we are called to be.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

We become sons of God worthy to walk with Him in white, because through the faith of Jesus recieved in the heart, we purify our hearts of the lust of the world and so overcome the prince and power of the world.

We walk worthy of Him outwardly, only by becoming worthy of Him inwardly with a pure heart: He shed His blood for us, that we should wash our heart and soul with His blood for Him.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Everything in the New Covenant centers around the heart.
Ezekiel and Jeremiah both spoke of the heart and how it has to be changed.
Ezekiel 36:26
"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Jeremiah 31:33
33“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

The Mosaic Covenant did not function well because it was outward, just as you point out.
The Holy Spirit existed but did not dwell within us...He was an outward force.

Only a change in heart could please God.
The Holy Spirit is now an inner force that dwells within.

I also like your point of the bar being set higher.

The heart is the ground the seed ( word of God ) is planted in.

True. And only the good ground receives the the seed and understands to obey the engrafted word and bear fruit unto everlasting life: it is the heart that purifies itself of all uncleanness and lust of the world and keeps itself purified to endure and overcome temptation unto the end.

We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

The hearers who only agree with God in word and tongue, do not keep the word to do it for eternal salvation:

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.

Jesus was foreshadowing the law of Christ as being more glorious than that of Moses, by declaring God now sees and judges the heart first, so that works of the law no more justify any believer.

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

By shedding His blood ont he cross, he was going to give power unto believers to finally do what they have been implored up and commanded to do under the Old Covenant:

The LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem.

The Mosaic Covenant did not function well because it was outward, just as you point out.

It was as imperfect as the blood of bulls and goats.

But the blood of the Lamb of God washes the inside of the platter first, so that the outside can come truly clean, rather than being only an appearance of righteousness:

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The truth is that when we believe on Him with the heart, then He gives us power to become sons of God: the power of the faith of Jesus to wash and purify our souls and hearts with His blood.

We wash our hearts with His blood by obeying Him and having life in us:

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Eating and drinking is by obedience in the heart.

Only a change in heart could please God.

True, because only by faith is God pleased.

I also like your point of the bar being set higher.

True. The law of Christ digs deeper than that of Moses, in that it begins in the heart first: we cannot now, as in days of old, obey outwardly only be justified with God according to the law, because we are now commanded to obey inwardly by the Spirit.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Before actions counted...Now actions do not count unless they're accompanied by faith.

Well said, and I believe this is most misunderstood doctrine of salvation by faith in Scripture.

Paul was not condemning doing the law and the word, by which we are justified with God, but rather is warning Christians, like Jews of old, not to go about doing our own righteousness without faith from the heart.

For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Scripture warns against both: doing works without faith, and having faith without works.

To be saved and justified with God we must have and do both, first in the heart, and then with a whole pure heart.

Another great error with Christians is carnally separating faith inward and works outward, without understanding there is no separation between faith and works inward in the heart: the true separation is therefore not between faith and works of faith, but between first works obeyed in the heart, followed by the works of His righteousness with the body.

Whether through licentious liberty of faith only or self-righteous legalism of works only, both fail to obey the first great commandment of purifying the heart by grace through faith, that we may in deed and in truth obey the second great commandment to love one another and our neighbors.

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law.

Those becoming the sons of God are attaining to the righteousness of the law by both faith and obedience in the heart and from the heart.

Hebrews 10:16 kjv
16. This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17. And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Ephesians 4:23 kjv
23. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Romans 7:25 kjv
25. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Now back to:
Jeremiah 31:33 kjv
33. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

This is a bit of jump. Inward place of Holy of Hollies.
Under the law once a year most holy place.
So
When we look at New Testament ( we look for that Holy Place ).

All we have listed is heart and mind.

Heart is visible, and has to do with the flesh ( supplies nutrients to all organs, cells etc. Digestive system supplies nutrients, lungs supply oxygen, kidneys remove blood / cellular wastes. Which are symbols of daily life.

The spirit of our mind is a little different. No symbols of a temple there, but Jesus seated at the right hand of the Father. Much like Matthew chapters 5–6–7. Attitudes, righteousness etc. and not symbols.

The Godhead symbolism is in our ( made in his image ). We just can not see in our mind ( secret place). I apologize for this 45? year effort on one post.

Angels are equal to nerves. In our body nerves carry messages . In our mind angels sometimes carry messages to God.
I hope no one is having a fit.
Ask questions, fuss at me, communicate.

Everything in the New Covenant centers around the heart.

Jesus was foreshadowing the law of Christ as being more glorious than that of Moses, by declaring God now sees and judges the heart first, so that works of the law no more justify any believer.

I believe Jesus was upset with the Pharisees because they taught works, they no longer taught the love of God.
Jesus wanted to teach the Jews not to be hypocritical, as some are even today, when they seemed pious on the outside but rotten on the inside and far from God. We should do our best to live as He taught.

Jesus tells the Jews to obey the teachings of the pharisees, but not to do what they do.
Do as I say, not as I do.
The Pharisees burdened persons with their religiosity, but never lent a hand to help those in spiritual need.
Like some churches today.

Jesus said His burden was light, and His commandments are easy to follow and are not burdensome.
He taught the exact opposite of what the religious leaders of His day taught.
Matthew 22

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

By shedding His blood ont he cross, he was going to give power unto believers to finally do what they have been implored up and commanded to do under the Old Covenant:

Right.
The difference between the Old and the New is demonstrated throughout the N.T.
Putting new wine in old wine skins... Matthew 9:14-17
The old has passed away, the new has come... 2 Corinthians 5:17
Put on Christ...Romans 13:14
Put on the image of our creator...Colossians 3:9-10

This is a big theme in the N.T. The above is just a sampling.

Interesting how you worded the above highlighted by me.
Man is made of 3 units, a trichotomy.
Body, Soul, Spirit

And the spirit does indeed have an effect on the soul and changes it to be more in conformity to what pleases God.

Romans 8:1 is very much posted for support by those that believe there is never any condemnation in us because we believe in Jesus. I think they forget to read the very next sentences...ending in
verse 4...we no longer follow our sinful selves (nature) but we now follow the Spirit.

Before actions counted...Now actions do not count unless they're accompanied by faith.

23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Thanks eddif.

Notice that Jesus said that we are not to leave the other teachings undone. We need both the faith and the action.

I'm thinking of our christian brethren that believe no action is necessary ,,, Jesus taught action corresponding to our faith.

Romans 2:14 kjv
14. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15. Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

So let us reason together.
The Jew had to do the works of the law of Moses untill Jesus came and wrote the law in their hearts . Then they suddenly born again in the spirit of their mind saw their redemption in Christ Jesus.

The gentiles who knew not God suddenly have a heart toward God written in their hearts with instructions to have a way of daily life the Jews had to struggle for? They too suddenly born again in the spirit of their mind saw their redemption in Christ Jesus.

So both groups then received the Holy Spirit. The Jews at Pentacost, and the Gentiles at the house of Cornelius.

So out of Jew and Gentile is made one new man.
A man God has written the law in their hearts and minds. Not requiring the wall of the law.

One day the welding glasses ( through a glass darkly) will go away.

I agree.
We are under grace.

Do you agree that, albeit we obey out of love, we are still required to follow the Moral Law, which would be the commandments that Jesus left us with and also to do what He asked, for instance Matthew 25?

I've been told that when I say we ARE TO FOLLOW, it sounds like we must adhere 100%.
I don't know how else to state that we are Jesus' disciples and are to do what He teaches us,,,
but we will not "keep" the commandments, or follow them, 100%.
(this might be my problem in communicating - not sure).

So true. :salute

Following His teachings and commandments are the way of love; loving our gracious Lord and our brothers and sisters.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

  • His commandments are not burdensome.

If you love Me, keep My commandments. John 15:14

I guess the question we should ask ourselves is… Do we love the Lord?

1. Corinthians 9:8 kjv
8. Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

1 Timothy 5:17 kjv
17. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
18. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

Ephesians 2:15 kjv
15. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, somaking peace;

First off:
I am not the final truth. I see through a glass darkly. One day we all will see face to face the total truth.
You do not need a book by eddif or another person. Read all around the above the small scripture clips above. For instance start at verse 1 of 1 Corinthians 9 and read till you get a little past verse 8. The Holy Spitit leads into all truth .

wondering is moving towards seeing more.

The law of Moses was rigid. Written in stone with no bending.
If you had an ox treading out the corn you did not muzzle him. It does not even say let him eat some since he is working.
But
Hidden in that rigid ordinance (?), is the commandment to pay / feed / supply needs of workers exists.

The grace we live in is the ability to allow Jesus to take a rigid law statement and change our heart of stone into a heart of flesh. He does the changing.

The law is good.
But it is a rigid schoolmaster till Jesus Christ is come.

A Jew must realize the law of Moses has a more pliable loving meaning.

The Gentile must realize that Jews had the oracles of God (Hidden) in the law. A gentile might think humans were seeded by aliens. Gentiles had no complex hints of God. Gentiles did have the imagery of creation screaming of a creator God. Gentiles do not have to follow the law of Moses. Gentiles follow the law placed in their hearts and minds.

So. Jew and gentile are made into one new man. The rigid law is made more pliable.

This was the short version. LOL

I left out a comment about the moral law.
And here I fall short possibly.
The rigid ceremonial law (if made pliable / flesh) is very close to the moral law.
And
The moral law may be made more pliable too.

I do not support sin. I do support confession of sin and forgiveness. Jesus did deal with the woman caught in the very act of adultery. Jesus knew the law and forgiveness. One day all this will be clear.

I'd like to say that many years ago I understood something that is important to understand in our Christian walk. It would seem that we are truly free when we can choose between good and evil...when we can make up our own mind about what we'd like to do in any given circumstance. It sounds like true freedom.

I've come to understand that true freedom is when we can hardly choose at all !
When we don't really want the choice anymore...Romans 6:16 we are slaves to the one to whom we present ourselves.
Is evil a good master? Our best interest is of no concern to the evil one...in fact, I'd say he delights in seeing us do his evil works. And the outcomes this produces.

True freedom is when we are free of this evil influence and can enjoy the nature we were meant to have from the beginning...a nature that is closer to God than to the other god of this world. True freedom is when we do not want to choose, but are happy to stay within the parameters God has given to us so that we could enjoy His freedom and do the least possible harm to our lives while here. True freedom is being a disciple of Jesus.
