Bible Study The Second Book of Samuel

Atonement

The Second Book of
SAMUEL

The Book of Second Samuel records the highlights of David's reign, first over the territory of Judah, and finally over the entire nation of Israel. It traces the ascension of David to the throne, his climactic sins of adultery and murder, and the shattering consequences of those sins upon his family and the nation.

See First Samuel for details on the titles of the books of Samuel. The Hebrew title for both books (originally one) is "Samuel." The Greek title for Second Samuel is Basileion Beta, "Second Book of Samuel," or simply "Second Samuel."

One of the parts of 2 Samual that always struck me was when David was leaving Jerusalem and Saul's kin Shemia (sp) is taunting David and throwing rocks and David says something like, "If the Lord has caused him to do this, then who am I".

Once David dies, Solomon keeps his oath with his Father and Shemia is isolated to a geographic area which he doesn't adhere to and is then "taken care of".

the name in hebrew is schmuel it means heard God or God hears. that is my uncles middle name.

The most striking part of David's life to me was in 2 Samuel 6, his celebration of bringing the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. David was jumping and dancing in praise to the Lord as his wife Michal looked on in disgust. She reproached him for acting undignified, and his response? "I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this."

Wow! Oh, to celebrate the Lord our God as David did!
