This Absolutely Makes No Sense Whatsoever!

So my mother and I were just discussing this this morning since it's just about time to be scheduling our summer haircuts. However when she called this morning to schedule an appointment, we found out that they had gone out of business! 2So apparently they weren't making enough money. Back in the day not too long ago they were only charging us like eight or nine dollars to get our hair cut. However with in the past few years they were raising it to about fourteen to fifteen dollars because of the fact that other salons in the area were having a more successful business due to their prices were like thirty dollars or something. So I just have to ask this question, where in the world is the common sense in that!? Just because our haircuts were cheaper didn't mean that they were bad, otherwise we wouldn't have continued going there for the past several years. So who would want to spend thirty dollars on a haircut when you can still get the job done at fourteen or fifteen? I don't know, maybe that's just me, but it seems to me that it's only hair. So I was just wondering everybody else's thoughts and opinions on this and how much money you would spend on it and what is the reasoning behind getting an expensive haircut when you can save a bunch of money by getting a cheaper one. Sorry if that's a little personal, I'm just really curious. Luckily we did happen to find another salon nearby though just a little FYI.

Bankers are printing too much inflation. That's why prices keep going up.

People choose which salon to go to for more reasons than just price. Might have been one of those other reasons.

It is your hair and you have to look at yourself in the mirror everyday, so I spend money on whoever can do the best job. You are helping out a person or business when you hand over your $. I went in for a haircut and when I got out, my husband said I looked like I had my grandmother's haircut. So, I want someone who knows what they are doing.

Well that's really good and all but as I stated in my OP, a lot of places like the salon we were going to before recently discovering that it shutdown do a fine job without charging you an arm and a leg for it. I guess I just don't really understand what the difference between a fifteen dollar haircut and a thirty dollar haircut as long as it's done well and you're happy with the end result.

its a business decision. if they can make more $$$, overall, charging 8, they'll do that. If they can make more $$$ charging 30, they'll do that. lots of factors go into play on charges for services...

It is possible the people you were going to were not charging enough to cover overhead, plus have a small profit. Add to that competition from other salons it is just a matter of simple capitalism. If you provide a good service and people are willing to pay for it, you may as well find a price people are comfortable paying.

Well I guess it's also partly because of the fact that hair stylists know that women will typically spend more money on their hair. My mother and I must be in the minority of that group though because we just want a nice cut and have our bangs out of our eyes. We're not really all that fancy when it comes to our hair which is why we keep it short and easy to manage.

it's a funny thing but when i first started owning revenue property i had a hard time - as a christian i charged less than market - thinking it was the right thing to do - i had nothing but problems with bad tenants

a friend - also a property owner - recommended i raise my prices to market or above - because my properties were nicer than most - well wonder of wonders - i started getting top quality tenants - and no more problems

it's funny but in the business world if you want to attract top quality clients you charge top dollar -

Usually, "usually".... from experience, a more costly haircut is better quality. I've run the gamut of hair places. I also have a limit in my mind what I would pay. If you can have an awesome haircut for $8, then that is a gift for sure!

personally, im a dude, dont do chemical stuff to mah hair, so i keep it basic. the places in walmart get the job done. its cheap enough so i can tip fairly well and still walk out spending only 20, maybe a little more if im feeling generous.

there is something to be said about charging what you can for goods and services in a capitalist economy. my parents briefly owned a small house that they had rented out thru a property management company. on the downside, the company took 10% off the top. on the plus side, they took care of the basics and screened tenants, plus they set the rent at a fair market value. my parents ended up with tenants who kept the rent paid and didn't cause problems, and they were able to sell to a real estate dude w/o too much hassle.

i agree - it's just that most people do think a higher price means a better product - and that is probably what put them out of business

That's the price that I used to get my hair done at. I'm not really sure whether or not you can get one that cheap anymore.I mean, I realize that everyone has to make a living, but even with getting a more expensive cut you're taking a bit of a risk. However, the great thing about hair though is it always grows back, so even if you don't get one that you actually like, you're not stuck with it forever. Besides, you could always decide to wear a hat or something until it does.

Yeah I suggested exactly the same thing to my mother, but luckily for us the salon that we found nearby is pretty much around the same price.

Like Knotical pointed out one has to take into factor the overheard it cost to run a business and be in competition with other shops, but yet trying to keep their prices at a place where they can make a fair profit and pay their employees. I learnt how to cut my own hair when my sister went to Cosmetology school and I was her guinea pig. Been cutting my own hair for a very long time since my sister became a school teacher instead of a hair stylist as no one has ever cut it right and my sister has no time anymore.

Nope, never a bad one. Always comes out the same way every time. I had a good teacher in my sister who taught me.

That's good, you're lucky lol! I'm just about ready to go for my haircut now. We were going to schedule an appointment for this weekend, but apparently you can only do walk-ins. So we decided to go today.
