Thoughts on Joel Osteen

I like Joel Osteen.
I like Joel too. I've been uplifted by him and fed by him. I don't like corporate persons. SCOTUS said Corporations are People too. I don't like that. Of course they were NOT talking about charitable corporations who were incorporated (created by the State) under 501(c) (3) laws. But even church corporations are people too and they form tax shelters and other very lucrative privilege in exchange (in part) for their agreement to not blast politicians from the pulpit. You should check out IRS laws and stuff. It's an eye-opener.
Who are you?
I've never seen you on this forum before?
Jethro? You may know his cousin, Donna Douglas who played Elly May on The Clampetts but don't don't tell me that you've never heard the story about a man named Jed, a poor mountaineer who barely kept his family fed, until one day, while shootin' at some food, up from the ground came some bubblin' crude... OIL that is. Texas tea.

Never mind who I am.
Or, as the poster of more than 12,000+ posts says? You may simply never mind who he is...
Yeah, I said something.
I had a thread shut down today.
I can do that anytime I want.
You think you're such a big shot?
Let's see you shut down a thread.

And now we come to the reason that I have replied. Ignore the man behind the curtain. Oh, wait. Wrong channel... one second...

You might be interested to know that Moderators know that some Members stir trouble just to get threads closed. Not saying that is what you did, but it did sound like you were bragging a second there ... but as for Jethro? Take a look at his Post Count. And you've never heard of him? Oh, I get it. You like casual. Jethro and JLB typically hang out in the more rambunctious area affectionately known as "The Snake Pit" or - Ye Ol A&T (a.k.a. Apologetics and Theology) which IS a dedicated debate area. You don't see them in hobby's -n- sports all that much.

I'm known for being a co-moderator of Christianity and Science (by some) but not known for being a moderator of Ye Ol' A&T. But I was that too for a couple years back when. And that means that I have read every single word and every single post that they made in that area for years too. Funny how compartmentalized we are, isn't it? It was just strange to my ear to hear somebody say, "Who are you again?" to such a familiar poster. You know?

Oh, and before you think that I'm just her trying to one-up you? Maybe I am, I don't know either, but Jesus knows. I tell myself that I'm shedding light on our Mod team here who perform one of the most unselfish and unthanked services that I've ever had the pleasure to be counted among the company of. Those guys read every wood (oops, every word) even if it is Evelyn Woodhead's Sped Reding - complete with finger tracing sometimes. They are 100% volunteer and zero compensation or $$ for their dedication --well, that is, unless you count heavenly reward as $$ but who would do that? Not Moses who counted the riches of Egypt as dung, that's for sure.

The are not revealed as "Blessed" by the Most High, yet, but trust me, they do earn that title.

You've been away for a while Sparrowhawke.
The whole thing between him and me is insider stuff.

Insider stuff? That's tru for everything between me and you. And especially true for Jethro, the cousin of the beautiful (to this day) Donna Douglas. He does something that I admire. Jethro, shut your eyes, turn away, yah, I'm talking behind your back so stop listening!

But what he does is he uses his wit to establish a code (insider stuff) between him and those whom care to interact with him. Like I said, I listened to him and JLB go back-n-forth for a couple years. So although I am not privy to the flow between you two, I can well imagine. But that's not what I admire either. Any ½-wit can do that. Even me. That's part of what our sense of humor is and even though Jethro has a sublime sense of humor, it's something else that attracted the eye of this bird. It was my hawk eye that turned toward him so long ago... The one capable of examining minutiae for potential nourishment from a distance ... and the thing that I saw was his habit.

Skilled communicators know how to connect with their audience. One of the tools in their arsenal is the ability to create a sense of intimacy with their audience. One of the component parts of building that sense of familiarity between author and reader is the ability to create and define memorable code words and phrases. And that's where Jethro's wit comes in. He's so quick to be able to codify references that he can create a sense of intimacy or at minimum, a sense of familiarity, by creating code words and phrases that flow, seemingly, just between ye and moo.... between you and me, ye and moo... did yo'se guys git 'dat one? I use other devices, but that does not mean mine are better. His are.

Hey Sparrowhawke, did you know that I said nice things about you to others while you were gone?
I did.
You said some things to me that really helped me.
Thank you.

I like Joel Osteen.
Those few time when I was sick, down and out and couldn't make it to church, I would watch Joel Osteen.
And he would always give me a lift that I needed.
And that's more than I can say for any of the others on tv.

When i was lost and looking for fellowship i only had christian tv and Joel was on there, and many others, and i enjoyed listening to him and he has helped me in times of struggle, so he has done the will of God in a way, then the more i read and studied and once i got my own bible and studied for some reason my respect for him started to drop for some reason, i think maybe because he never opens books and speaks the word of scripture and uses his own life coach teaching.

So i decided he must become less and scripture must become greator.

Rarely do I take it upon myself to make any sort of judgment, being barely weened from the milk myself. I take no pleasure in calling things as I see them with Joel Olsteen, but I don't think I'm wrong. I think we should take Matthew seriously and be on guard against false prophets and wolves in sheep's clothing.

And all that aside, to name me or some other joe an "idiot" is such a lack of personal charity that your message falls short, Brother Mike. Contrary to Joel Olsteen who delivers pure fluff, you deliver vitriol and condescension. I, in my life, am deserving of both. Still, I think people would be more pressed to accept your sharpening if they didn't feel like you were personally insulting them.

God bless, sir.

Blake, there an issue with understanding what Jesus said here?
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
(Mat 7:1-2)

What happens to you if you Judge Blake? What's the next step? You so awesome, that your exempt from this?
The difference here Blake is Your a Member here, and I am a Member. Both of us have equal rights. You can break it down for me, and I can get help, and I can break it down for you. You have a right to listen, or not listen, same with me.

So, which one of us in in charge of Joel Osteen? Who gave us that authority? Is Joel our servant?

There are some folks here that posted Joel helped them, according to you, that can't be possible, so they must be lying.

I take no pleasure in calling things as I see them with Joel Olsteen, but I don't think I'm wrong. I think we should take Matthew seriously and be on guard against false prophets and wolves in sheep's clothing.

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
(Mat 7:15-16)

Is Joel producing bad fruit? Joel stole from anyone? Lakewood church brings in 32 million a year, Joel keeps 200,000 of that. Is that tiny percent to much money?

Jesus said beware false prophets........... How much Prophecy Joel speak? About zero?

you may think I am harsh Blake, but if it wakes you up so you can be blessed by God, then great. You can't judge people you have no authority over, and expect good things. It does not work that way.

Mike

In fact, Joel does not even harp on tithing, or mention it very often.

He doesn't preach about hell either.. and without mention of that my friend he's preaching another gospel..

tob

I don't think I ever preached on Hell either. You only have so much time to speak and must be led by what you speak.

Lol. I take no pride in myself as to call myself awesome.

The difference here Blake is Your a Member here, and I am a Member. Both of us have equal rights. You can break it down for me, and I can get help, and I can break it down for you. You have a right to listen, or not listen, same with me.
Yes. I agree. The problem is I do like to listen to you a lot of the time, but there are other times when I can't understand why someone who is pretty scripturally sound isn't personally convicted when devouring his brother or sister with harsh words and criticism.

There are some folks here that posted Joel helped them, according to you, that can't be possible, so they must be lying.
That's a bit of a stretch, Mike. Joel can, does, and will help people. God uses crooked sticks to draw straight lines all the time. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I don't have any problem with how much many Joel makes. I have no problem with Joel at all, as a human being, he is my brother. I just think that he is doing his congregation a disservice by not preaching to them about the things which God hates. I think he panders a little softly and, if challenged on such matters as homosexuality or Islam, he would buckle and use pretty words to avoid the topics.

I reap the blessings of God frequently and I don't think our individual opinions on this matter will change your blessings or mine in any way, shape, or form.

And don't make a big deal about his 12,000 plus posts.
He just talks more than he listens.

Rollo, I heard what he said in the "this summariezes-the-heck-outta us" post, but wait!

Odd couple? neat, uptight Felix Ungar and the slovenly, easygoing Oscar Madison loved each other deeply, but you already know.
No, he never said that, now did he?
She died in January. :cries
I did not know that. Thanks for teach me this, Lars Bodine. I am he who remembers but I missed that one. She's gorgeous inside and out.
