I work at a grocery, when I can get hours. I am a bag boy and I also have to take people grocerys out, unless they want to carry them. I am not allowed to take tips. I kind of hate that rule.

I give myself haircuts for the same reason, all my years in the military is was just easier to do it myself. I give a standard 15% but more for good service, but never less than 15%. If the service is bad I still give em 15% but let em know what was wrong. I also will give a minimum of 5 bucks too.

I was a paperboy and seldom got tips, but did do pretty well on christmas so I guess I'd do that if I got the paper.
What's the point of the tipping system if regardless of the service they get 15%?

I think it's a dumb system, because as you pointed out, we are paying part of a waiter/waitress' paycheck. Since the restaurant owner doesn't have to pay them minimum wage, he gets cheap labour and his customers pick up the rest of the tab for their wages. Seems kinda unfair to me. If we're already paying for the food, why should we also pay part of their paycheck? Even so, since we have this system we tip at least %20 unless the service is really bad, as I said earlier...

I agree, mostly.

So if you get a really bad service, do you still have a minimum tip? If I was over in America and got a lousy service there's no way I'd give a tip.

Well it depends how bad the service was. We would obviously take into consideration whether or not she's new, and sometimes you can just tell that someone is depressed. If the service is bad we leave $2 or $3, but if it's just plain ridiculosly awful we won't leave anything...unless the Holy Spirit prompts us to, and sometimes Tim will leave a tract (no not a Chick Trackt :) )

yes, that was all given within weeks of christmas. what we are allowed to do is put christmas cards in the paper with our address.

i aslo get tips from customers that renew(these dont tip on christmas) and i have gotten cards on easter. with money.

I saw an article in the reader's digest once about how people do that: card in the newspaper, on the garbage cans, mailbox, recycling, etc. The article likened it to extortion, where people feel obligated to pay or else they will conveniently not receive services. :lol The article then talked about how high the tips are for those people and once you tip them all how much you could be out that they didn't anticipate in their budget.

I didn't have time to finish reading the entire article. :study
we dont do that. many of the customers dont tip. i still give them service, just dont go out of the way. its like this, tip getter the better treatment or not get the standard service. i only get paid .126$ usd per paper that i throw (the paper i work for directly) there other papers i throw, wallstreet journal, new york times, and also the financial times etc.

In my life, I've probably not left a tip at all maybe a hand full of times. I've talked to managers about it and explained why we weren't tipping; that we always do ordinarily.

On the other hand, if the service is good, not even great but good, I'll try to seek out the manager and tell them we really appreciated the service. Sometimes we've been given coupons for free food on future visits! :yes Not that I'm Mr. Niceguy, but I try to find the managers when I see someone doing something right! People need that encouragement sometimes. :thumb And all too often they only hear the complaints and never the compliments. It's funny when you ask to see the manager. The person gets worried :help and then the manager comes over all bent out of shape :help and then you pull the zinger! You tell them something good! It's funny to see their shock and relief. :thumbsup

I expanded this fun from restaurants to all kinds of stores!
