some say that we should tithe?
and we are cursed if we dont per malachi 3:10.
others say that we arent under the law.

for the record i know that if you tithe and give you will be blessed. and i desire to give. pray that the situation i'm in changes. i wont go into it.

obvuiously the church needs money, from gifts or tithing otherwise.

I think we need to give to God but really all we have been blessed with is a gift from Him.
He is the one that opened the doors for me to work and He is the one that gave me the talents I have to pursue the line of work I'm in. We are just stewards of what He has blessed us with.

All in all though I think it's not the amount that we give that's important nor should we be in fear that if we don't give we are cursed. The most important thing is that we give with a cheerful heart.

2 Corinthians 9:7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

some churches preach that we are under the curse if dont pay or give. mine does.
the lord rebukes the devourer is the line of thinking.

Hi Jason

My understanding, is that the tithe was according to the law of Moses. And the book of Malachi is written unto the priests (levite) of Israel - Malachi 2:1 & 2. The curse spoken of is made clear in verse 2 as to whom the curse would be upon.

The church should not be put under the law of the tithe. Unless you want to be put back under the law and that will put you back under the curse - Galatians 3:10

Bless

i see that, but many of todays chruches preach that. i dont tithe an havent for some time, and i have extra money

when i dont it because i have overspent not being cursed.
i want to give to my church as it as overseas missionaries, i want to support them.
they are in costa rica and honduras.we also have some in turkey.

Tithing is 10%, isn't it?

I think if you can give 10% that is good, but we see through parables in the NT that what matters is what is in the heart. Some people cannot afford to give heaps, and others much more. Give what you can give and do it out of love, not out of obligation.

I think it is great to financially support your church, if you can afford it. I know when I started giving to the church (it wasn't much, and still isn't) I felt much better. It is such a great feeling, and yes, I believe we are blessed if we give, from experience. But we should not get caught up by thinking "If I give I will be blessed" becasue then the wrong motives come out. If you start giving with that attitude, you will not be blessed.

the heart is most important when giving

Hi Jason

Give from the heart . And giving to these needs in costa rica and honduras and in turkey seem like a good place to give. But the heart is what God is looking at.

Hi Jason

Will do . :praying

Yeah, in general, most people give 10% of their income before taxes. In my church, offering is also a form of worship. Afterall, God gave us everything we have, and its only right to give what we can back to Him.

yes, but does your church preach that verse malachi 3:10, is for the believer today.

funny thing is when you look at the book should we also do those other things. some churches also point to the verses on where jesus spoke about the pharisees giving all manner tithe , rue, and mint and failing to have mercy.
he was quoting habbukuk on that, its better to have mercy and not sacrifice. he also did say that pharisee should have done both giving and have mercy. but that was in reference to old law and its temple worship.

My church is big on tithing. And I love to tithe. But when I explained to my pastor my situation and why I couldn't tithe right now, one of the first things he said was, "Don't worry, you're not under a curse."

That curse stuff is totally OT law. Jesus bore the curse. Those days are over.

Do what you can. That is all that is asked of you. Your heart is what counts.

I like how we do it....we have a can in the back of the room...no plates are passed around.
We are absolutely under no law to tithe. Even passing the plate is wrong, in my opinion.
All eyes are on who gives, and we're supposed to give in secret. It opens the door for judgment and changes the cheerful giver to one under bondage.

Matthew 6:1-4 said:
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

I've also learned, if I fail to give to the poor, my pockets have holes in them. :biglaugh

That's a good point. Lots of us give electionically, so it reduces the 'pride factor' a bit. But we have the plate being passed around.

The simplest answer would be : Did it work for you ?

If not, then somebody has been lying to you to lay their hands on your money 2Pe 2:3 And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: ..............

Let them show you tithing in the New Testament. They cannot. God loves a cheerful giver who meets the needs of others all the time. God does not want us to walk around with a calculator working our when to stop giving, when we have reached 10%. God owns all of us.

If you sow God's money into these dead "ministries" you will reap nothing (as many of you know to be true, through experience) but if you give to Christians who need food, money, accommodation and clothing all around you, you are giving to God. THEN you are laying up your treasure where moths and rust and thieves cannot get to it. You are then investing with God and you are investing REAL money with Him and He will look after you when you need it in return. That is HIS promise.

Tithing is of the Law as Jesus pointed out: Mat 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone.

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. - Rom.4.16
Abraham tithed!

Abraham also sacrificed lambs :)

If you don't mind me saying so, I think that rather bottles the point. We already have a Lamb slain for us.

I agree that we are not bound by any Mosaic laws on tithing, and also that there is no clear injunction to tithe in the NT. But the fact remains that we do have an example of a man justified by faith tithing.
