Tonight is my last night in the Hanoi Hilton, or what is otherwise known as one of the most hellish weeks (month) I have ever had to experience. I have never had a medical issue as bad as I have had with this one - Kidney stones in both kidneys. I know what you're thinking. Just kidney stones? No, I've had "those" kinds of stones before. But this was something altogether different. With these stones, I've had to undergo 6 separate procedures this past month and a half. Some b...ad, some not so bad. This past week though was the worst one of all. Two days ago I was bed ridden, in so much pain that I could hardly talk to my wife, with a tube coming out of my kidney which drained my constant bleeding. I also had a tube draining my bladder. I was continuously nauseous and vomiting. On top of this, I had adverse reactions to some of the meds they gave me, and at one point, I was writhing and shaking on my stretcher because of said reaction. They had to sedate me to get it stop. And to top it off, even my own stench was getting to me.
I have a new found sympathy and compassion for anyone who is suffering medically. My heart goes out to all of you who are, or who have a family member suffering in such a way. I also want to thank my wife who has been doing her darnedest to keep things going both at home and at the hospital with me. This has also taken an emotional toll on her as well. She is my hero, and I can't wait to see her and my family again in the comfort of our own home, without having to worry if I'll need a blood transfusion or something. I also want to thank everyone one of you who has prayed for us and supported us through this. It means so much to us. Those prayers have paid off as well, because as I went into this situation I had no insurance whatsoever, but it turns out Medicaid just recently passed a version of Medicaid that we qualify for, in spite of our income, and also because we have a minor child. In the past, I was routinely denied for Medicaid, but they are paying for literally 100% of the medical expenditures, even retroactively. The timing is providential and impeccable. We know somebody is looking out for us.
