Valentine

tandemcpl:

What a lovely testimony, Sir. Very moving indeed.

You know, for my wife and me (we are roughly your contemporaries, though have not been married as long as you guys) it's a great joy for us — together — to read the Bible day by day, and pray. Light in a dwelling where by His grace He has made us open to His love in Christ.

Blessings.

Thank you, farouk.

We are really enjoying growing in Christ together. Praise God.

Be blessed.

Toby

We wait till my birthday to celebrate. Our grandsòn's birthday is near to this time, too, so we save our money. But around this time our church has a city wide father daughter ball. Girls from about 3 to 30 dress up and dads show them how a man should treat a girl when they go out. They often go out to eat also, but often the tiny ones prefer McDonalds. This year they are having a hillbilly hoedown instead of tux and I am just praying that there will be no Daisey Maes but that modesty will prevail. It has been extended to 3 nights and is being held in an arena due to the popularit. This is the one thing that draws a huge secular crowd so a short evangelistic message is also given.

Carolyn:

Interesting idea. I guess anyway that if a church is going to organize a father-daughter ball, I note your concern of course, but I would have thought that the organizers probably wouldn't be particularly worried about things such as necklines if they are having such an event in the first place. Hope it's not too much of a worry for you, anyway.

Blessings.

LOL I see it being manipulated but I don't really care. I see it like this: here is a day - yes, consumerist as it is - that is culturally set aside to do something extra special for your partner or spouse. I'll be dammed if I'm not going to take up that opportuntiy. I don't see it as negating any other day, but why not do something on Valentine's Day?

So...um...I hope you have an uneventfull Valentine's Day, and hopefully I'll have a great one in 2014! :D
NICK! ARE YOU A BEAVER OR DID YOU CUSS?

It is usually our godly men who object to too much skin. It is not offensive to me.

Carolyn: Well, maybe what you are up against is probably a male puzzlement (on the part of males who are probably known for their expertise about vastly different matters anyway) about why arms and shoulders are traditionally not covered in bridal party gowns and for events such as balls. On the one hand that male puzzlement is a reality sometimes; on the other hand, gowns for those occasions being designed the way they are is also the reality. These possibly differing male/female perspectives may sometimes be contrasting, but, like you say, the matter need not be regarded as offensive.

(But what do I know?)

Hope you guys have a great time anyway, and may there be a good opportunity for the Gospel at the event.

Blessings.

The link above notes a possible mixing of pagan practices with Valentines day. The early Roman church had a terrible practice of mixing Christian beliefs with pagan beliefs in the hopes of converting pagans. I am against such practices based on the teachings about a little leaven ruining the whole lump.

As for who gets the glory... Well, who does get the glory? God or the person you celebrate the day with? It seems to me the holiday is more about the woman in the relationship...(Come on guys! Stand up! You know its true!) Even if the glory is meant for God, we have to ask whether he will accept it. I don't think he would if it has pagan roots.

Even so, I'm sorry, but I still think it's a silly holiday. For those who are going to celebrate it (especially thisnumberdisconnected), I hope you have a good time.
We obviously differ on this, but I respect your conviction not to partake in Valentine's Day. The Day or celebration appears to have its roots in pagan pratices, but your link does say the origins are "murky". Your link also says that it was not until the Middle Ages that the day became associated with love and romance. To me this suggestes that the pagan part has essentially been replaced by the romantic part.

I don't believe we are worshipping pagan gods by partaking in Valentine's Day, but if you feel otherwise, then I respect that you act on your conviction.

As for the glory...well the pagan gods certainly don't get the glory. And among Christian couples, God should get the glory, and this is to be the case on every day of the couple's relationship or marriage. It doesn't diappear on the 14th of February every year.

I'm fine with that.... I do agree that the details are "murky". This is why I said in a former post that at the very least it has pagan symbols attached to it. My link showed at the most it's outright pagan in origins. But again, that's at the most and it is murky. Still, I see it as silly and both my wife and I will not participate. but to each his own.

:shocked
I didn't read all the posts in case you have mentioned it before.
Is this an individual decision or a general (agreed) one?

One can find a pagan influence in almost every celebration or holiday on the calendar. Even birthdays have some pagan influence. There are those who even make the (excuse me if anyone here is among them) ludicrous claim that we shouldn't celebrate Resurrection Sunday or Christmas because they coincide with similar pagan rituals. Citing that as a reason not to participate in anything is mostly a cop out. The pagans who instituted some of these holidays aren't among us today. No one is going to think another is celebrating Valentine's Day for pagan reasons. It is not about the pagans or pagan origins. It is about what is in our own hearts when we choose to celebrate.

Celebrating Christmas and Resurrection Sunday are different. I don't do those because they are based on lies. It seems pretty disrespectful to Jesus to worship something that's not the truth, especially when he said that God requires such.
