Warning about high energy drinks

handy

Member
I wanted to share with everyone that my best friend's son just found out that he had high blood pressure and is showing other symptoms of heart disease. The culprit? They're doing tests, but the doctor is really putting his foot down about the high energy drinks the kid was downing on a regular basis, Monster being his favorite.

It could be that he had a problem with his heart before and that the Monster drinks brought the problem to the surface. Or, it could be the Monster drinks themselves. At any rate, although he has had regular doctor's visits pretty much all his life, it was just this past visit that brought out the heart issues. He had been complaining of a fluttering feeling in his chest and shortness of breath, which was why his mom dragged him to the doctor's.

Unknown is whether or not quitting the drinks will return his heart rate to normal. As of now, my blood pressure and heart rate, (middle aged, out of shape me) is better than this seemingly healthy, athletic, boy of 18. When they tested him, his bp was a whopping 148 over 89 and resting heart rate was 119 beats. :crazy

I know that these drinks are really popular, but just be aware that there are more and more links with these drinks and heart problems.

Enough caffeine and sugar in those things to give an elephant a heart attack! I thoroughly disapprove of them!!

Take care of your kids people! Be involved in every aspect, even what they consume.

Totally agree with that. Perhaps he should stick to water. Best drink ever made! :lol
Hope he gets better. Just said a prayer for him.

Now days pending the brand of energy drink, they are I.D.ing people. Otherwise...there are usually some form of directions on the cans or bottles of these products as to how they should be drank. Think it is more the case of proper measures being taken.

My husband drinks those from time to time. The one he drinks specifically states on the bottle that you cannot drink them on a daily basis amongst other things. But not sure about all energy drinks out there. I personally do not drink them. So I do not know all there is to know there.

Handy;

Hate to revive an ancient thread but I was having a conversation with some teens the other day about these drinks. After noticing how they were so defensive of any suggestion that maybe they were developing and addiction to these drinks when they weren't willing to give them up long enough for a one night youth event, I was searching for info from a Christian perspective as well as a health perspective.

Did you ever find out if the energy drinks were the culprit?

Anyone else have any current info?

I'm not trying to support an agenda either way, just looking for information in order to form an opinion.

Elijah here:

Hi, type caffeine into your Web/search & see what comes up? And health you mention? It is good to see some Christian folk taking a real interest in that.:thumbsup

My wife showed me a picture of a women mowing her lawn on her garden tractor this week. She also did her own garden work, and even makes her own carrot juice, sounds simple enough so far, huh? But it did give her age at 103,(;)) + her being a vegan vegatarian.

OH! And a Seventh-day Adventist for 58 years & vegan 37 years.

And an agenda?? Whatever, but 'i' am not a Seventh day Adventist.

Wow! If I even live close to that age, I hope I can just get out of bed. That says a lot about her lifestyle!

I just meant that at this time I'm keeping an open mind to the idea of drinking the energy drinks. I'm not trying to promote one side or the other until I have more info. (I've never even tried one myself yet!) But i am in a position to take a stand on the subject and want to get more points of view before I form my own.

And thanks for your post, as it helps with perspective. I take it the 103 year old woman was not drinking energy drinks every few minutes all day long? (No, that's not a serious question:D)

Hi Igor,

After about 3 months off of the energy drinks, his heart and blood pressure was completely back to normal. It's a very good thing he was as healthy as he was in all other respects...he could have faced some serious damage. From a health perspective, this should give anyone food for thought.

From a Christian perspective, the idea that one couldn't give up anything for a one night youth event is probably a good reason to discuss what Paul meant when he said, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything." (1 Corinthians 6:12)

I would imagine that drinking one energy drink every now and then, isn't going to hurt anyone physically or spiritually. But, drinking one or two Monsters a day, and being unwilling to give them up for one evening...yeah, it sounds as if Monster is the master and Christians should not have any master other than God.

I HAD A FREIND THAT TOLD ME HE WRERE DRINKING EENERGY DRINKS NOT SURE OF WHAT KIND HE SAID THEY DIDNT MAKE HIM CRASH BUT I KNOW THEY MADE HIM SLEEP ALOT I BELIEVE ALL ENERGY DRINKS ARE DANGEROUS

Moderation people, moderation!
I don't drink coffee but know people who will drink it all day long!
I will sometimes have a coke or mountain dew in the morning, same thing I guess, just not all day long.
The energy drinks got a bad name from a few that were mixing them with alcohol and marketing them to college kids, ok, to me that one is a bad idea.
Our bodies have this ability (sometimes good, sometimes bad) to quickly adapt to basically whatever we throw at them. Smoke a cigarette and throw up. Smoke twenty cigarettes and now the body wants some more. Same with those drinks, if you read the labels on MOST of them it is ok, but drink them all the time and now the body needs them just to be normal. Same thing with most medicines.

They recently completely banned them all at college for some reason maybe it was a health warning.

Many athletes now are giving up the high energy drinks because they were rotting their teeth, even with great dental habits.

My wife & I are getting up in years, and found this on another site posted by the one below. You might find this of interest to you as well as it was to my wife & I?

ONE FINAL BIT OF PROOF OF THE "GOOD FRUITS" OF E.G. WHITE FOLLOWERS!
NATI--- GEOGR---- PROCLAIMS SDAs TO BE THE LONGEST LIVING PEOPLE ON EARTH!

The cover story of the November 2005 issue of 'Natio--- Geogra---- Magaz---
discusses the longevity of Adventists, four to ten years longer than non-Adventists. Adventists, along with natives of Okinawa and Sardinia, are the longest-lived people in the world, a trait which has been attributed to health practices as well as the weekly Sabbath as a stress reducer.
