NextGen Series

This month FC Barcelona's U19 A team faces a quarter final in the Next Gen Series (the youth equivalent of the Champions League). It is a single match affair, to be played on February 8 at 20.00, with Ã’scar Garcia's side up against Ajax Amsterdam, another club that is widely renowned for producing great youth players.

It is free to get in and we are hoping for a huge crowd at the Mini to support our stars of the future. Members, supporters clubs and fans can see the greatest young stars in Europe in what should be a cracking match, in which only victorycounts.

Record breaking first stage

In the group stages, FC Barcelona were up against Olympique Marseille, Glasgow Celtic and Manchester City. The U19s finished top of their group with five wins and just one defeat, playing great football in the process. Manager Ã’scar Garcia was able to see how his side ended the group with 20 goals from six matches, with Jean Marie Dongou currently the top scorer in the competition..
Hope to see you all there!

Thiago: “We can win La Ligaâ€

The Barça midfielder believes his team can cut into Real Madrid’s lead, saying that “over the years we’ve demonstrated a lot of thingsâ€

“I think in the short term, and that means focusing on Real Sociedad. We cannot be concerned with Valencia or Bayer Leverkusen"

“Of course we can fight back. Over the years we’ve demonstrated a lot of thingsâ€

Thiago Alcántara talked about the possibility of his team cutting into Real Madrid’s seven-point lead. The Barça midfielder is confident that La Liga trophy will once again reside at the Camp Nou at the end of the season: “of course we can fight back. Over the years we’ve demonstrated a lot of things." Thiago believes that in order to claim more titles the team must take it one step at a time and only focus on the next match. “I think in the short term, and that means focusing on Real Sociedad. We cannot be concerned with Valencia or Bayer Leverkusen ,†the Spanish-Brazilian midfielder. He added, “we set weekly challenges for ourselves.â€

Messi and Puyol

On the game against Valencia, Thiago said that “we didn’t capitalize on our chances. We had a lot of them and we simply didn’t finish them.†Onthe team’s lack of accuracy in front of goal, Thiago doesn’t believe that Barça depends solely on Messi and his goals: “Messi is a born winner. We have the best player in the world, we are not dependent on him but we must take advantage of his virtues.â€

One of the highlights of the match was Carles Puyol’s double roulette . Thiago praised his captain for “showing his quality at Mestalla, a difficult ground ... I have to tip my hat to him and thank him because it was a beautiful thing for football.â€

Referee decisions

“Luckily he didn’t make the right call.†Thiago was honest when he was asked about the play where it appears that Pinto handles the ball outside of the Barça box. However, Thiago notedthat “the refrees, with their virtues and defects,do their job, just like players do.â€

Spotlight on Real Sociedad

02-02-2012 18:01

Real Sociedad are based in the Basque city of San Sebastian - or Donosti in Basque- and are one of Spain’s most famous clubs, founded more than a century ago.

Messi.v1328202993.jpg

Messi against Real Sociedad

They won their two league titles between 1980 and 1982 – a golden era for the club -and in 2007 they were relegated after 40 consecutive seasons in the top flight. Three years later they were back and last year they finished 15th in theleague.

British links
Right from the beginnings of the club, Real had aconnection with English football and boasted two Brits amongst their Cup winning side in 1909. Later on in their history this connection was taken up by two ex- Liverpool legends John Aldridge and John Toshack – the first as a player between 1989 and 1991 and the second as coach for three periods between 1985-89, 1991-94 and 2000- 02. Dalian Atkinson was the club’s first black player when he signed from Sheffield Wednesday in 1980 and Welshman Chris Coleman also managed them between 2007-08.

Perhaps the most curious connection though, is through the manager Harry Lowe, who was at the club in the 1930s and in 1934 set the record as the oldest player ever to figure in the Spanish top flight, when he turned out aged 48!

The Barça connection
Barça also have close links with the club, with Dream Team legends Jose Mari Bakero and Txiki Begiristain and Luis Lopez Rekarte all signing from Real in 1988. Txiki went on to become Director of Football at Barça between 2003 and 2010. After retiring as a player, Bakero eventually took the same post as Txiki at Real and then became their manager from 2005-06.

Form Guide
Last season, the Txuri-Urdin - the white and blues -needed a draw in their final game with Getafe to secure another season in the top flight, though they did manage to beat Barça 2-1 at Atocha - a result that stopped Guardiola’s team from taking Real’s record of 32 games unbeaten, which they set in the 79-80 season. After sitting in the relegation zone earlier this season – and that despite holding Barça to a 2-2 draw at Anoeta – Real are now up to 12th on 24 points. Last week’s 5-1 win over Sporting wasa morale booster – though it did follow a 0- 4 beating by Atletico Madrid and a 6-1 thrashing by Mallorca in the Cup earlier in the month.

Real have the seventh best away record in La Liga this season, having won 3, drawn 2 and lost 5 games on the road.

One to watch
Home town boy Xabi Prieto made his debut with Real Sociedad in 2003 when he was just 20 years old. Over the last few years he has established himself as a firm favourite with the fans and is the current club vice-captain. A skilful midfielder, Prieto is also an expert penalty taker –as Barça know full well, he scored the winning goal from the spot against them in Donosti last season.

Cup, Liga and Champions league on the horizon

02-03-2012 11:12

February started with the first leg of the cup semi final at Valencia (1-1), and continues with further challenges in all three competitions: Cup,Liga and Champions league

2012-02-01_VALENCIA-FCB_18.v1328264200.JPG

They say January is one of the hardest months. Itinvolves league matches every weekend and potentially as many as three rounds of cup games in between. But February could be considered even tougher, because with Barça still alive in all three major competitions, there are six highly demanding fixtures ahead.

Cup: one game away from final
The month started with the Copa del Rey match at Mestalla (1-1). Next Wednesday the teams meet again at the Camp Nou, with FCB well on course for a second successive appearance in thefinal. If that happens, the final won't be until May at a neutral venue against Bilbao or Mirandés.

Liga: looking for comeback
Four of the six games in February are in the league. Two are at home (Real Sociedad and Valencia) and two are away (Osasuna and Atlético Madrid), all of which are against teams high up in the table. Those are four key games inBarcelona's bid to cut down Real Madrid's current lead of seven points.

Champions League: off to Germany
The month also sees Barça's European campaign continue. The tournament is down to the last sixteen teams, and Barça are up against Bayer Leverkusen. The first leg is in Germany on Tuesday, February 14, where the objective will be to get a good result to take back to Catalonia for the second leg in March.

The agreement will run initially for the next four years
President Rosell has said today that the agreement “shows that the club is as strong as iron at the moment: socially, sporting and financially, we’re getting better day by dayâ€

Barça and the Red Cross have signed an institutional collaboration agreement for the next four years for the implantation of actions ofa social nature that will help to promote the synergies of solidarity and social commitment. Among other actions, this includes the 'T'acompanyem' project, designed to significantly improve care for Barça fans and members with difficulties or disabilities.

"The Club is as strong as iron"
The agreement was presented today in the Sala Ricard Maxenchs by president Sandro Rosell, the vice president of the Institutional Area, Jordi Cardoner, and the president of the Red Cross in Catalonia, Josep Marquès.

Rosell declared that the agreement "shows that the club is as strong as iron at the moment: socially, sporting and financially, we're getting better day by day". Vice president Cardoner added that "fortunately we have elderly members and we don't want their enjoyment of football to be limited in any way". Marquès, considered the agreement to be "the beginning of a very important bond ... I hope it can be forever".

Pioneering initiative
'T'acompanyem' is a pioneering initiative in the world of football that caters specifically for the mobility needs of the members and fans watching games at the Camp Nou that have locomotor difficulties. Thanks to specially trained Red Cross volunteers, a pilot care and support service is being set up for people with disabilities or mobility problems on match days at the weekend.

The project focuses on two main areas: accompanying people from the care points on the Camp Nou grounds to their seats before the match and when it is over and the accompaniment of a small group of FC Barcelonamembers from their homes to the Camp Nou in an adapted Red Cross vehicle. Twenty volunteerswill be working on the service every match day.

Abidal: “Barça is my second familyâ€

The Frenchman has signed an extension to his contract for one more season, until June 30, 2013. The agreement includes the possibility of an extension until 2015

The buyout clause of 45 million euros remains intact

2012-02-03_FIRMA_ABIDAL_40.v1328275996.JPG

On Friday at 13.00, Éric Abidal signed a new contract with FC Barcelona. The Frenchman and the president of FC Barcelona Sandro Rosell sealed the agreement in the club offices, also in the presence of the vice president for sport JosepMaria Bartomeu and the director of the Sports Area Andoni Zubizarreta.

The agreement extends his contract by one moreseason, until June 30, 2013, and includes the possibility of an extension until 2015.

Happy in Barcelona
Abidal is happy to be in Barcelona. "I have always said that I'd like to stay and live here andenjoy the football" he said, adding that FC Barcelona "is my second family. I see people at the club more than I see my own family". The full back and FCB have worked hard to define the new conditions and renew the contract that sees Abidal stay at the place "where the best football in the world is played".

This is Abidal's fifth season at Barça, and he is now one of the veterans at the club. But of all the seasons he has been here, he still thinks the first was the most memorable, "because I had just arrived from France, and discovered a new world, a new country, and a new language." But the second year was also very special "with the arrival of a new manager and we won everything".

He also talked about Xavi’s improved fitness, saying that he deserved and needed a break. The midfielder was on the bench against Valencia

Pep's goal celebration in Mestalla
Pep Guardiola explained his celebration when Puyol scored the equalizer at Mestalla. The manager, pointed to the pitch with a hint of rage: “I wasn’t expecting the pitch to be so dry, but they have every right keep it like that. It’s their house, and they call the shots. We have to adapt.â€

"Leo is a player that is always above average. He’s always ready to play, he’s very, very competitive"

"Real Sociedad is classic team and it’s great that they are in the Primera division"

From now until the end of the season, every game Barça plays will be crucial to keep title hopes alive on all three fronts: Cup, League, and Champions League. The team is seven points adrift from the top in La Liga and they cannot let anymore points slip by. Pep Guardiola was very clear in today’s pre-game press conference: “I will ask the players to be who they have been in the past. We know we’re almost past the point of no return. It’s not a time for words, it’s time to play the best we possibly can and win, taking it one game at a time.â€

The Barça manager said he won’t be paying attention to the Getafe-Madrid match, which willbe finishing up just before Barça takes the field. “We have to be concerned about winning our game, that’s the only thing we can do.†He went on to say: “our game plan is to do our job in the best way we can, like we always have. We’ll see how things go from now on.â€

Messi , always
Despite the missed penalty against Valencia, the manager is clear: “Leo is a player that is always above average. He’s always ready to play, he’s very, very competitive. Sometimes he takes on responsibilities that he shouldn’t, but you know my opinion, he always plays well. He always scores goals or gives them,†he told the packed press room. Furthermore, Guardiola also highlighted the Argentine’s record from the penalty spot: “Messi’s statistics, taking the shot with so much pressure on him, are spectacular.â€

The manager also talked about Xavi’s fitness, the midfielder was on the bench against Valencia midweek: “he’s better. The break was very beneficial. We all think that he can cope with everything, he’s very reliable, but he’s had four years without any breaks and sometimes the body asks you to stop a little. He was fit today.†Guardiola also praised Alexis, saying thatthe “effort he puts in brutal†seeing that he’s stillstruggling with clavicle pain.

Realist on tomorrow's attendance

On Real Sociedad, Barça’s rival tomorrow, Guardiola said, “they play the ball well from the back and they come at you from the wings and the middle.†He added: “they’ve only lost one game out of their last nine. They are a classic team and it’s great that they are in the Primera division.†Despite the very cold weather, the manager called on Barça fans to atted the Camp Nou tomorrow: “if they come, they should bring a coat. I hope they attend, but I understand[if they don’t], the forecast says it will be very cold.â€

22.00, Radio Barça - FC Barcelona have their first chance to start mounting a comeback in the league tonight as they face Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou

They go into the game without any of the injured Afellay, Villa, Fontàs, Pedro or Iniesta, or Keita, who is still at the African Nations Cup

This is the first home game of the second half of the season and comes in the middle of the Copa del Rey semi final

It's once again time to change the chip. Three days after going to Mestalla for the first leg of the cup semi final and four days before the return at the Camp Nou, FC Barcelona entertain Real Sociedad in the league. With the city currently enduring freezing weather, Guardiola 's side are looking to mount a comeback in the competition, but will be doing so against an in-form side that has finally managed to climb out of the relegation zone.

Against adversity

Once again, FC Barcelona have a lot going against them. The biggest problem is with injuries, as no fewer than five first team players are now on the sidelines, namely Afellay, Villa, Fontàs, Pedro and Iniesta , while Keita is still away in Africa , where his Mali side have qualified for the African Nations Cup quarter finals. And there is also the pressure of now being seven points adrift of the leader, and playing in unfamiliar circumstances, for the forecast for Saturday night is for subzero temperatures in the Catalan capital.

18 players

Guardiola has just 15 first team players available for the game, and has once again called in Sergi Roberto, Dos Santos and Tello from Barça B . The latter two already got a run-out on Wednesday night at Mestalla, and could well be in contention for places tonight as well, especially if the manager opts to rest any of Cesc, Messi, Alexis or Cuenca with the big cup tie with Valencia coming up on Wednesday.

Real Sociedad: one defeat in nine

But first up come Real Sociedad . The Basques got off to a dreadful start in the league, but sinceNovember have been making amends. They have only lost just one of the nine league matches played since then, and that has meant they have climbed to twelfth, with a distance of four points between them and the relegation zone. For the visit to the Camp Nou, Philippe Montanier recovers Demidov and Ros, but has lost both Elustondo and Zurutuza to injury.

FC Barcelona - Real Sociedad: Three points in the freezing cold (2-1)

02-05-2012 00:04

Barça overcame freezing temperatures and an injury to Busquets to beat Real Sociedad 2-1 at the Camp Nou tonight

2012-02-04_FCB-R._SOCIEDAD_16.v1328393177.JPG

PHOTO: MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

Barça prevailed over the difficulties that the weather and the Donosti team set them thanks to goals from Tello and Messi in each half in front of a 52.646 crowd who braved the Siberian temperatures at the Camp Nou. The negative for Guardiola's men was the injury to Busquets – justafter he had come on in the second half.

The late goal for the visitors from Vela rounded off a game that Barça had begun with eight homegrown players and which served to put an end to a three game run of draws- two in the Cup and one in the league-and leave them still seven points behind Real Madrid in second place after the leaders beat Getafe earlier in the evening.

Tello marks debut with goal
Messi and Ifrán both tested the keepers early on,but it was Barça- with Tello and Cuenca playing out wide and Dos Santos sitting in front of defence- who opened the scoring when on his debut, Tello got a subtle touch on 37 minutes to put away a great assist from Messi to beat Bravo in the Real goal.

Domination not rewarded
Guardiola's team were ahead and dominating the match, but they were still missing a certain spark in the passing game that has characterisedtheir best performances. Alves and Cesc both came close to making it two, but they both showed signs of the team's nervousness in front of goal and the narrow lead at half time was hardly a fair measure of the relative merits the two teams had shown so far.

Messi on target
Messi was again in the action after the break, but he looked to be out of luck, before he headed in an Alves cross on 72 minutes. Real Sociedad reacted quickly with a Vela goal just two minutes later to make it 2-1 with a quarter of an hour still left to play.

Busquets injury
Guardiola now brought on Abidal and Busquets for Puyol and Dos Santos to try and close the game down, but the Catalan midfielder hardly lasted anytime whatsoever after banging into a Real attacker on the edge of the box. After he was taken off to be replaced by Piqué, Barça took the sting out of the match and ran down the game to take the three points that keeps them seven behind the leaders.

With the win this Saturday, Pep Guardiola bringshis tally of games won on the FC Barcelona bench to 160. The manager has only conceded 44 draws and 18 defeats in his three and a half years at FC Barcelona. His record has allowed him to guide the first team to 13 titles out of 16 played since he was named head coach.

Guardiola equals Frank Rijkaard ’s record of games won. The Dutchman trained Barça from 2003 to 2008. During that time he won 160 games, tied 63 and lost 50. Guardiola’s next challenge is to catch Johan Cruyff ’s record of 250wins (the Barça manager was at the Azulgrana helm for 430 official matches).

601 games for Barça between his playing and coaching careers
This Saturday was Guardiola’s 601st game with the first team. He played 379 in the Barça coloursas a first-team player and against Real Sociedad he completed his 222nd match as the Barça manager. Guardiola, who made history as a player, is now making history as the Barça coach.

Lionel Messi, the three-time Ballon d'Or winner, sat down with TIME's Bobby Ghosh to discuss his career with FC Barcelona and his ambition to winthe World Cup

The journalist talked about his affinity for the Club saying that: “as I say in my story, I have been a Barça fan since I was very young. I was attracted to the style of play, the philosophy of Barça football ... but mostly, I was attracted by the attitude of Barça, on the field and in the terraces.†As many football fans profess, there is a difference between having a fondness for a club and being real supporter, Mr. Ghosh said he crossed that threshold when he “saw on TV a game where Barça, playing at Camp Nou, won the game 1-0, but didn’t play well. After the finalwhistle, the spectators boo-ed the team. I thought to myself: ‘That’s a club where it’s not enough to win, it’s more important to play well.’ I was already a Barça fan before then, but that day I became a ‘cule.’â€

“Messi is amongst the best ever†- Sir Alex Ferguson
“I hope it’s the moment for Argentina and that we can become World Cup champions" - Leo Messi
"'It’s not enough to win [at Barça], it’s more important to play well.’ I was already a Barça fan before then, but that day I became a ‘cule'"
In the TIME ’s cover story, Bobby Ghosh outlines Messi ’s coming-of-age career with FC Barcelona and the player’s future ambition with his national side. The journalist also addresses the question of whether or not the Argentine should be considered the best football player of all time.

King Leo, perhaps the best player ever to grace a football pitch
Mr. Ghosh writes in TIME that “every generation produces players who change the game with their talent or approach - Puskas, Di Stefano, Pelé, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane. Messi’s third Ballon d’Or cemented his place in the galaxy of greats, it also made him the centerpiece of a singular argument.†The argument: should Lionel Messi be considered the best football player ever? Mr. Ghosh goes on to cite Sir Alex Ferguson , manager of Manchester United, as saying “Messi is amongst the best ever,†and quotes Josep Guardiola , “[he] could be the best player of all time.â€

The journalist builds his argument with Gary Lineker ’s, England’s iconic striker, observations on Argentine star: “I look at him, and he does at least three or four things in every game that I never did in my whole career.†Terry Venables , another famous football man that hails from the British Isles also had words of praise for Barça’s number 10: “it’s not possible what he does.â€

Despite the accolades and words of praise, perhaps the only thing that outshines Messi’s trophy-studded career is his humility. When the player picked up his third consecutive Ballon d’Orin Switzerland this January he told Mr. Ghosh, “year after year, I’ve grown, improved ... I was lucky to start very young and always have very good colleagues around me as I was comping up, this had helped me and how I play.â€

Mr. Ghosh, a lifelong FC Barcelona fan, admitted that Leo Messi was in his editorial queue for years. But what made the journalist pull the trigger on the story was the Argentine’s third Ballon d’Or conquest: “for me, it sealed his claim to be the best player of his generation. That was the perfect moment to put him on TIME’s cover.â€

His instincts were correct. After the TIME edition featuring the portrait of a solo footballer for the first time in the history of the publication hit the stands on Sunday the media and online reaction was palpable. “Judging by the media reaction and the buzz on the Internet, this was one of ourmost talked-about cover stories, worldwide,†the journalist said.

One on one with Messi and the playmaker’s World Cup ambitions

On interviewing the understated three-time Ballon d’Or winner, Mr. Ghosh said: “he is famously shy and withdrawn. The challenge wasto get him out of his shell a bit. I can’t honestly say we managed to do that: it would probably take several meetings before he got comfortable with me. But we managed to get a couple flashes of candor.†While Messi prefers a more low-key profile to the bravado that’s probably expected of a superstar, one who is possibly the best player to ever grace a football pitch, he did open up when asked about the World Cup in 2014: “I hope it’s the moment for Argentina and that we can become champions. I’m going because I want to be champion and share the World Cup with my national team.†Ahead of the World Cup, the Argentine said, “there’s still a lot of time to prepare and improve.â€

You can read the entire interview with Leo Messi here .

Leo’s impact in the United States
Interest in football in the United States, while in its embryonic stage compared to Europe, is growing precisely because of players like Leo Messi. “As Americans grow more and more interested in football, they also get more and more knowledgeable. It would take a national opinion poll to judge how much they know about Messi, but if I had to guess, I would say he’s quite well known - mo than, say, Rafa Nadal , or Fernando Alonso ,†Mr. Ghosh said. The journalist went on to say that “young Americans, who play football a lot, know Messi very well. In New York, I see many kids wearing the Barça shirt with his name on it. â€
