With his three goals against Granada, Leo Messi surpasses César’s record and became the all-timetop goalscorer in the history of FC Barcelona in official matches with 234 goals

On March 20th 2012, Leo Messi became FC Barcelona’s all-time top goalscorer in official matches after breaking César Rodríguez’s record of 232 goals . The game against Granada, on week 29 of La Liga, will be remembered for this extraordinary feat: a hat-trick by the three-time Ballon d’Or winner that took his all-time tally to 234 goals, two more than the illustrious ‘Pelucas.’ At 24-years-old, Messi is a living legend.
Atlético, Messi’s favourite victim
The Masia graduate, who made his debut for thefirst team in October 2004, has scored 153 goals in the Liga, 49 in the Champions League, 19 in the King’s Cup, 8 in the Spanish Super Cup, 1 in the European Super Cup and 4 in the Club World Cup. His preferred victims are Atlético Madrid (18), Sevilla (14), Real Madrid (13), and Racing Santander (12). Curiously enough, Granada was the only team in the Spanish top flight that Messihadn’t scored on.
A monumental season
Against Granada, Messi pulverized his personal best goalscoring record. So far he has 54 goals, one more than he scored in the entirety of last season. The Argentine has scored eight hat-tricks (counting his four goals against Valencia and five against Levekusen). In the Liga, with 10 matches remaining, he’s the leading scorer with 34 goals. He’s the best, no discussion. And he plays for Barça.

Piqué: “It's a pleasure to be in the generation as the best player in the historyof the sport"

03/20/2012 23:50
The Barça defender was pleased with the team’sgame against Granada despite the fact that it’s been a difficult task to cut into Madrid’s lead, he also praised Leo Messi
Piqué: “playing for Barça means that you are always looked at though a magnifying glassâ€

Training session on Wednesday
Barça will train this Wednesday at 11:00 at the Ciutat Esportiva Sant Joan Despí. Thiago will hold a post-training press conference.
After the 5-3 win over Granda, Gerard Piqué analysed, on Barça TV’s El Marcador , the team’s attitude in the Liga: “the team is very motivated and we’re on a good trajectory, with great football. At times we play at a high level and that reinforces us in the Liga and in other competitions.â€
However, the Barça defender considers the challenge of gaining ground on Real Madrid at the top of the table a difficult task: “it was hard to pull two points back, the Liga [title] is difficult to win and we don’t depend on ourselves.†On the two penalties called against Barça tonight, Piqué said that “in those plays, and even more sowith how sensitive the referee issue is, you don’tcall them.â€
The center of attention
The Azulgrana talked about the controversy that’s been circling around him in the past couple of weeks: “at first it did have an effect onme, but in the end there comes a point where you have to disconnect and focus on your training.†Piqué considers that footballers that play for the Club is synonymous with always being the focus of attention, “playing for Barça means that you are always looked at though a magnifying glass. My job is to go out onto the pitch and give it everything I’ve got. You must improve each year to continue at this Club.â€
On his manager's statements last week when hesaid that Piqué would only leave the Club when the defender chose to, Piqué said that “it’s an honour that Pep would say that, usually it’s the Club that opens the exit door for a player.†The Azulgrana went on to say that “I don’t have a date set for leaving the Club.â€
Situation that needs to imporve
“On an individual level I’ve enjoyed playing for the team, but I have to improve a lot of aspects of my game, like my aerial play. I have to be strong,†explained Piqué. He also went on to talkabout the way Barça defends: “[the team marks] in zone, we’ll try to dominate and make fewer mistakes. We have to cover each other's backs.â€
Leo Messi, in focus
Breaking César’s record and netting a hat trick have undoubtedly made Leo Messi the star of the game. Like many of his teammates, Piqué had words of praise for the Argentine: “it’s a pleasure to be in the same generation as him, I believe he’s the best player in the history of the sport. I’ve been lucky enough to be on the same team as him, I consider myself privileged.†He went on to add that “it doesn’t matter where he plays, if it’s cold or hot, he always proves that he’s the best.â€
Here are statements made by Barça’s players after the match against Granada:
Víctor Valdés : “Messi will mark an era. He’ll be the best ever.â€
Cristian Tello : “In person, Leo is just like he is on the pitch; a simple lad and very friendly to his teammates.
“The truth is that the match went a bit against us, but we were able to control it. However, we have to wait and see what Real Madrid does.â€
Isaac Cuenca : “We managed to score more goalsto win the game. I feel great. The Liga title is difficult to win but we have to see if we can keep on winning out matches in order to keep our possibilities open.
“Leo Messi is amazing, heâ€s the best in the world and he proves it on a daily basis. For me, he’s the best ever.
“It will take years to see someone else do something similar to what Messi does. We have to enjoy him and his plays.â€

Guardiola, on Messi: “We are witness to thebest football player"

03/21/2012 00:18
The Barça manager praised Leo Messi on the daythe Argentine broke César’s record. Guardiola is clear that it will be difficult for another player to break Messi’s record
The manager also played down the fact that the end result was 5-3, he also said that “we paid tribute to the Barça of the Five Cups,†César’s team

2012-03-20_BARCELONA-GRANADA_13.v1332286228.JPG

Bartomeu: “We have Messi for many years to comeâ€
Athletic vice-president Jose Maria Bartomeu congratulated Leo Messi for breaking César’s record. The director recognised that “it’s unlikelythat another player like Leo will play [this sport]and break this record.†He said “we have a fantastic player for many years to come. We’re privileged.†The director is pleased to see Pep Guardiola’s team succeed year after year. On the manager’s possible contract extension, Bartomeu said that “he’s an important person, he turned this team around, the Club and Barça’s athletic vision. We want him to stay. He represents much more than a manager and we hope that he stays.†He also talked about Abidal,“we hope everything works out for him. We’re optimistic.â€
"I’m sorry for those that want to sit on his throne, but this lad is the best"
“On the day that Leo Messi broke César’s record we played a game like one would have been played in that era, a 5 to 3 as a tribute to the Barça of the Five Cupsâ€
“We are witnessing the best [player] in every sense. He does everything, and he does it every three days. I’m sorry for those that want to sit on his throne, but this lad is the best. Hopefully we can enjoy his football for many more years.†Josep Guardiola is a happy man and he has the humble honour of training the world’s best player, Leo Messi , who scored a hat-trick againstGranada to become the Club’s all-time high top goalscorer in official matches. His 234 goals have delighted the world of football, and Guardiola is in lockstep with awed football fans and pundits alike. “Leo has rightfully entered into history,†he said. He also has no qualms about comparing the Argentine to Michael Jordan: “there are few players that dominate in this fashion, and he does it.†The manager said that at Messi’s goalscoring rate, it will be difficult for any other player to break the Argentine’s record.
Tribute to the ‘Barça of the Five Cups’
“On the day that Leo Messi broke César’s record we played a game like one would have been played in that era, a 5 to 3 as a tribute to the Barça of the Five Cups.†That’s how Guardiola analysed tonight’s match against Granada. The manager also played down the fact that the Andalusian side drew level on 61 minutes. “[The game] had all the ingredients of a football match. I want to congratulate the team for overcoming all of today’s adversities.â€
Goalscoring midfielders
Xavi scored once again, which takes his tally past his personal best record for goals scored in a season (14). Guardiola recognised that “this year the midfielders are scoring quite a few goals; we’re trying to get them to have more presence in the area.†The manager also took the chance to congratulate Isaac Cunenca and Cristian Tello , seeing that “both of the wingers won us the match.â€
Against Mallorca, Guardiola will not be able to count on Alves , who was sent off, and Adriano , injured. “I’s a shame, but we’ll find two more players. We’ll bring up players from the reserve side, I suppose it’ll be Montoya. We’ll go to Mallorca to compete like we did today.â€

He’d like to play in the Olympics
A few weeks ago Sergio Busquets admitted he would like to play in both the European Championships and the London Olympics. On Wednesday, Thiago also confirmed that, if selected, he would also like to participate this summer in both the European Championships and the Olympic Games.
With the victory against Granada, FC Barcelona have now won eight consecutive matches, whichhas allowed them to be right there in the Champions League, and also to reduce the pointsdifference in the League with Real Madrid. Thiago Alcantara , who attended a press conference, knows that the League "doesn't depend on ourselves" so the players are "only thinking about our games. We have 10 games left and we have to win the maximum number of points possible". The midfielder acknowledged that they're still hoping to win the League title. "The illusion is the last thing that dies, we just have to keep hoping".
"Messi is unique"
Thiago believes that just as there are people who say they saw Pele or Maradona play, he can say he has seen "Leo Messi play...........He's a player who has made history, is making history and will continue to make history". He believes that there are few adjectives left to define the Barça superstar, but what he is certain of is that"Messi is unique".
He also spoke about Cristian Tello. Thiago is not surprised by his performances, as he knows him well from playing with him in the reserve and youth teams. "He's always had this speed and ability" said the midfielder, who predicts that he'll score more goals.

Barça Alusport - Inter Movistar: Taking advantage of the Palau factor (3-1)

03/21/2012 22:21
Barça Alusport beat Inter Movistar in the away leg of the King’s Cup semifinal in a hard-fought match. The return leg will be played on April 3rd in Alcalá de Henares
Cristian and Juanjo were the two protagonists in the first half. In the second, Wilde, with two goals, was the man to watch

MATCH STATS
FCB Alusport, 3
Inter Movistar, 1
Barça Alusport: Cristian, Torras, Lin, Saad and Wilde (2) -starting five- Paco Sedano, Ari, Gabriel, Javi Rodríguez, Lozano, Igor and Fernandao.
Inter Movistar: Juanjo (1), Rafael, Matías, Ãlvaro and Eka -starting five- Tobe, Ortiz (1,pp), Batería,Genário and Betao.
Goals: 1-0, Wilde (min. 23); 1-1, Rafael (min. 32); 2-1, Wilde (min.33); i 3-1, Ortiz (pp. Min 37)
Referees: Fortes Pardo and Martínez Flores.
Inter Movistar gave FC Barcelona an honour guard entrance for the Catalan team’s conquest of the Spanish Cup. Barça Alusport offered up theCup to their fans after showing off why they wonit in the first place: with a stalwart defence, constant movement from the bench, and talented experienced players that decide matches in the final minutes of the game.
Goalless draw at the half
Juanjo and Cristian, the keepers, were the two protagonists of the first half. The duel between the two best squads in the National Futsal League started off with a shot from Wilde which tested Juanjo. Halfway though the first half, Lin and Wilde enjoyed a double chance to open up the scoring, however, they were both denied. Torras, minutes later, hit the right post. These were the best chances for Carmona’s men.
At the other end of the court, Cristian was proving key. First he stopped a free kick from Rafael and laster he denied Eka. The Barça keeper was brilliant, once again, as he saved a one-on-one with Ortiz.
A save from Juanjo from a free kick taken by Wilde in the last minute capped off the half. The two best defences of the championship outshone their offensive counterparts. Both teams knew that a goal was worth its weight in gold.
Wilde, scores. Cristian, injured
This Wednesday’s match was the fourth showdown between Barça Alusport and Inter Movistar; both teams showed that they knew each other to perfection. Wilde, however, broke the deadlock with a perfectly places left-footed shot after a brilliant assist from Ari Santos.
It wasn’t all good news, however. Two minutes after Barça scored, Cristian needed to leave the court with pain in his left leg after a collision with Rafael. The keeper had put in an impeccable performance up to that point, Paco Sedano trotted into goal in his stead.
Inter draws level
On 32 minutes, Rafael scored the equaliser for Inter with a good shot from the top of the box. A minute later, Tobe lost the ball to Wide, who brilliantly beat Juanjo to score his second goal ofthe King’s Cup.
Good result for the return leg
With nearly four minutes to go until the end of the match, Wilde looked to pass the ball but Ortiz deflected it to the back of his own net - it was Barça Alusport’s third goal on the night.
This was an atypical result in this sport, in two-legged ties. The players and the managers knew it, too- Inter didn’t play with a keeper/player, for example. The return leg will be played next April in Alcalá Henares. Barça willgo into the match with a valuable lead.

Gap at the top now just 6 points

Real Madrid dropped two more points with theirsecond successive 1-1 draw against Villarreal on Wednesday, to allow Barça to move within 6 points of the leaders

There was good news for Barça on Wednesday night, when Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Villarreal. With Guardiola’s men winningon Tuesday night, that means Barça are now justsix points behind the leaders who have failed to win in their last two games, with 10 matches leftto play in the campaign and 30 points still up for grabs.

At the weekend, Barça cut the gap between the two to eight points with their win in Seville, whilst Madrid were held 1-1 at home by Malaga.

Alternatives at full back

03/22/2012 12:10
With all three natural full backs - Alves, Adriano and Abidal- ruled out for the weekend’s game against Mallorca, there are a number of options with the reserves likely to provide back up

FCB-VALENCIA_52_.v1332414579.JPG

Montoya, Puyol i Piqué, després del triomf contrael València. FOTO: MIGUEL RUIZ-FCB.
Barça will go into the game with a number of players unavailable – especially in defence, withAlves suspended and Adriano and Abidal out injured, as well as long term absentee Fontas, and the coaching staff will need to shuffle their pack to fill the gaps.
Puyol’s versatility
The most common solution taken in similar situations has been to have Mascherano and Piqué play at the heart of defence, with Carles Puyol moving to full back. The captain is versatile enough to play on the right or the left, as well as both of the centre back positions – he actually started his first team career as a right back and has experience of playing in key matches – such as last season’s Champions League semi finals – at left back.
It’s also possible that with the first leg of the Champions League quarter finals on the horizon, Puyol will be rested.
Montoya and Muniesa - two safe options
There are two B team full backs who could also step up to cover one or both positions: right backMontoya – who has shown what he can do whenGuardiola has called on him, for example againstBATE or Valencia, and Muniesa, who has been training with the first team squad and took part in the game against Leverkusen.
Three man defence
It wouldn’t be out of character for Guardiola to settle for a three man defence either – as he did in the league game against Villarreal when he was short of defenders. The last time he used a three man back line was El Sardinero, three games ago, when the results were, as usual, positive.

Meeting of the Committee for the Identity of the Supporters Clubs and their Members
www.fcbarcelona.cat 03/22/2012 12:28
Last Sunday a meeting was held to finalise preparations for the plenary meeting on the 31stof March

2011-08-21_32_CONGRES_MUNDIAL_DE_PENYES_BARCELONISTES_040.v1332416070.jpg

Paper Presentation during the Penyes Congress
This weekend the third meeting prior to the plenary meeting on March 31st was held. This time it was the turn of the Commission for the Identity of the Supporters Clubs and their Members.
Most important issues
The three subcommittees of this working group defined the objectives to achieve, as well as setting targets for the medium and long term. Three interrelated groups that will work to promote the movement, and elevate the supporters club brand, within the precepts of theSupporters Clubs XXI Century project.
Subcommittee on Census and Supporters Club Membership Cards
The timetable was established for the launch of the online management of the supporters clubs website. With this new tool, the supporters clubscan perform all kinds of tasks from the website, following an established protocol, according to the procedure to perform.
The implementation period will go through a testing phase, which will involve the training of representatives of the Consultative Council, to beable to lend support to their supporters clubs. A second pilot phase will also take place, with the involvement of a number of previously selected supporters clubs.
With the publication of a user manual, telephone support, and assistance from the OAP, the supporters clubs will be able to perform all sorts of tasks with the online tool.
This will also help with the census of supporters club members, so that the Club may have a reliable picture of the scope of the movement. It will also serve to know if the supporters clubs are meeting the requirements established by the regulations regarding the minimum number of associates. From here, work will be carried out on the issuing of supporters club membership cards.
In parallel, it was also announced that the Club is working to digitalise all the documents it has on file. Thus, all information will be available in a quick and agile manner.
Subcommittee on Communications and New Technologies
This committee reviewed a season with many new developments regarding new technologies. The new web platform, which was launched in November last year, and the involvement of supporters clubs on the social networks, were two of the most important topics dealt with. These developments mean a first step on the road, as several initiatives are also being developed to improve interaction between supporters clubs.
With regard to the census of supporters clubs and their members, this subcommittee will workon monitoring the implementation of the secondlevel of the supporters clubs web platform.
Finally, it was announced that the program"Quina Penya!" on Barça TV is working on its second season.
Subcommittee on Marketing
This subcommittee is working to establish synergies between the supporters clubs and everything that will help to extend the Barça brand. The FCBotiga Bus, a mobile shop of FC Barcelona licensed products, will travel to the most multitudinous supporters club events and activities.
The possibility of offering various promotions to supporters club members is being studied, once the supporters club membership card is in progress, as well as offering several benefits to the supporters clubs. Banks and travel agencies, amongst others, are sectors that can mutually benefit with the supporters club movement.

From 100 to 150 in 18 matches

On January 9th of this year, Cesc Fàbregas scoredFC Barcelona’s 100th goal of the season. It was in the Catalan derby at Cornellà-El Prat. Barça reached the 150-goal mark 18 matches after thegame against Espanyol - 11 in the League, 5 in the King’s Cup and 2 in the Champions League.

Even though there are two months left in the season, Guardiola ’s Barça is very close to breaking all of the scoring records since the manager took charge of the Barça bench. This Tuesday, with the five goals against Granada, the team reached the 150 goals scored mark in official matches this season. The player to score the team’s latest goal, of course, was Leo Messi . The Argentine’s hat-trick capped off a great night that allowed Messi to break César’s record .

Guardiola, record breaking pace

The team is very close to breaking their own goalscoring record under Pep Guardiola’s management. In fact, they are only two goals away from equalling the number of goals they scored last season (152), and they are within reach of the 158 goal mark the at the team set inGuardioal’s first year; the most amount of goals scored in a season for Guardiola as manager. To beat their own record, Barça have, at the very least, 13 games to play - 10 in the Liga, the King’sCup final, and the Champions League quarter-finals.
