Bible Study WELCOME TO AN IN DEPTH STUDY OF MATTHEW'S GOSPEL.

This might be random, but the instant I read this verse I thought it squashed anyone who tells them God wants them to have more than one wife. I don't know if you can add another wife without lusting first?
There is a long history, even in the Bible, of marriage contracts being made that don't having anything to do with lust or love. In the Bible, sometimes planned by God, other times motivated by receiving power through the relationship to powerful families.

What if the answer to where temptation resides lies in what part of our spirit, soul or body needs to be born again, or more correctly "regenerated? according to 1 Pet 1:23.

Okay sis, let's ask the question, What died the day Adam sinned? Gen 2:17
It wasn't his body, because Adam lived 930 years. Gen 5:5
I wasn't his soul or the seat of his emotions because he was afraid of God and embarrassed because he was naked, both emotional reactions.
That leaves his spirit, his spirit died the day he sinned, that means he could no longer communicate with God spiritually or more important God couldn't/wouldn't communicate spiritually with him (us).
Without Divine communication and direction with our soul our soul (emotions) is directed by our body through information from the five senses, we hear something we do/don't like we react, someone hits us we react, we see something we react. 1 John 2:16
We read the human heart is deceitful and wicked and we don't even know it's capabilities to sin and evil, ...only God knows and can read our hearts. Jer 17:9

Then temptations must come to us through our five senses and/or an idea or image in our mind placed there by the enemy of our souls, which the only filter of good or bad, right or wrong is our conscience which can be overridden by our wicked hearts, hence we give in to the temptation and sin.

When we are born again the door to communicating with God, our spirit, is opened to guide and direct our souls overriding the information our souls are receiving from our senses, the fleshly lusts driven by the power in the air are very powerful, but the Holy Spirit is all powerful, when we are tempted He will give us a verse in our minds to use against the temptation Heb 4:12 which allows us to overcome the temptation, in every temptation we are standing before the Two Trees, there is a choice, are we going to decide what is good or bad or are we going to use the verse given to us which is eating from the Tree of Life?

As we mature in the Lord we tend to eat more and more from the Tree of Life, it's called sanctification, which results in the regeneration of our wicked hearts, which is a promise of the New Covenant. Jer 31:33 and resulting in the regeneration of our hearts. 2 Cor 3:2, 3

Sorry it's so long, time for work,

Blessings

Day 46 Tuesday 10/28/14 Matthew 5:29,30 Get Rid Of It.

Mat 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
Mat 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

I apologize for not adding V.30 to my original next day study. Both Vs 29 & 30 are saying the same teaching. Also, for a while, I'm using the English Standard Version of the Bible for our studies.

Sin must be dealt with drastically because of its deadly effects, says Dr. MacArthur.

Here in this text we have, for most folks, a big question. What in the world is Jesus advocating? Does He really want me to dig out my right eye and put it in the garbage? Truth is, throwing away my right eye won't stop the source of the sin.

There have been fanatical ascetics who have actually done this and teach others to do it as well, says Albert Barnes.

Romans 8:13 Gives the remedy. "For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." Someone has said "Either your sinful passions must die, or you must die." The Holy Spirit is the only One who can kill (mortify) the desire to sin, it cannot be done alone! You ask, how can I get the Holy Spirit to kill my desire to sin? I'm glad you asked! Hebrews 4:12 is the answer. "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Oh my friends, God's Word, the Bible, IS ALIVE! Just like on the first day of the new week "Jesus is alive!" If you believe that Jesus is alive, then believe that the Word of God is equally alive. It is a proven fact that the more we read, study, and meditate on the Word, the Holy Spirit is released in our being which is His Temple, to rid our heart of evil.

Do you think all temptation comes from the heart?
Do you think David's sin was directed at God? Or was he weak in the flesh?

Deb. I'm sorry if you don't believe that out of our hearts come good and evil. I solidly believe that our hearts encompass our whole being. Proverbs 4:23 says
Proverbs 4:20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
Proverbs 4:21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.
Proverbs 4:22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Also, Hebrews 3:10 "Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, 'They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways."

So, yes I believe all temptation comes from the heart. Temptation has an outside influence, and either, out of my heart comes a desire to indulge or not to pay any attention to it.

Even though the Scripture says that David was a man after God's own heart didn't mean that he had God's heart. It simply meant that his desire was to follow what God wanted. His heart's desire was to obey God. David's heart was no different than yours, the only difference that I see was a consuming fire to please and follow God with all his heart.

When Jesus was tempted by satan did that temptation come from Jesus' heart? :nonono

Yup, that is what I said.
If David's heart's desire was to obey God, God said it was, then it was Not his heart's desire to disobey God.
It has to do with grace and mercy and the intent of the heart. Did David sin in order to hurt God, was that his intent, is that what was in his heart?

I don't know how much your heart is wanting to please God. Your heart could have burning desire just as much as David's did. :yes

To your first question, NO, Jesus heart was pure & sinless, not like ours or David's. There is nothing in Jesus that would respond to anything that Satan tempted Him with. God is so holy that there is nothing outside of holiness that causes the Godhead to even think about evil except hate it. Therefore the temptation that Satan threw at Jesus was an outside attempt to cause Him to make a decision separate from His Father and His Spirit which was impossible. Satan is the father of losers because he cannot believe that he has been defeated by Jesus on the Cross.

I really don't get your thinking on David disobeying God. David always wanted to please God. An outside temptation came at him, and he responded to it. It had nothing to do with wanting to disobey God. He responded to lust that was in his heart and as a result, disobeyed the holiness of God.

I agree. :)
One of the temptations was stones to bread. Jesus had been fasting so His body was hungry. satan used that to tempt Him.

My post #533 partial quote...
"If David's heart's desire was to obey God, God said it was, then it was Not his heart's desire to disobey God."

Do I want to obey God with all of my heart?
Of course I do and I try, but do i sin, yes!

The difference between David and myself is I have the Holy Spirit indwelling me, nothing has really changed though since then, God is still looking for sinners that choose to obey Him with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength, ...and that's us, His Church.

As far as an outside temptation coming upon David concerning Bathsheba, it was not a sudden thing, she was the granddaughter of Ahithopel, his close personal adviser, she probably came with grandpa many times into the presence of the king, David was already in sin because of his many wives which was forbidden for the king to have so the planning of David to seduce her, rather than go to war with the troops, was the next logical step.

While I agree with you the reading of the Word cleanses us, I don't really understand what you mean by the two quotes I have high lighted, ...are you suggesting we can eventually have a sinless heart?

One way to think about Matt 5:29-30 is as a warning against our desire to see and do sinfully. The right hand (in a right handed world) is the one we use to do what we wish. The left one doesn't generally do as we wish. So, if what we want to do causes us to sin, we are better off separating ourselves from that desire, even to a hyperbolic extreme. Our perceptions can also cause us to sin.

Another way to look at it is as 'members' of a collective body, similar to the 'Bride of Christ', in which those of the Jewish leadership in Jesus' time had taken upon themselves the authority to determine what the Jewish people were correct to perceive and do according to the law, yet were in fact leading them into sin. It would then be best to remove those leaders from the collective body before their corruption of perception and works led their followers to reject Jesus Christ and tempt God's judgement.

Day 47 Wednesday 10/29/14 Matthew 5:31,32 Divorce.

Matthew 5:31 "It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce."
Matthew 5:32 "But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

Oh my! Divorce! There is not enough room to post all the problems, questions, divisions and arguments over the issue of divorce. Whatever doctrine the pastor or church has, either invites fellowship with others or is a strong enough issue to separate men, women, and church. Just about every "Fellowship", like the "Southern Baptist" was forced to declare its standing and doctrine on divorce. Divorce splits churches and godly men and women....SAD!

The Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians 7 gives his churches a doctrine on marriage which includes divorce. I have always stuck to Jesus' teaching on divorce because it is so simple. Has a partner committed adultery? For all express purposes, that marriage is dead. In the Old Testament, the guilty one was stoned to death, therefore the innocent could re-marry. Re-marriage has always been a volatile issue. A divorced person who had re-married was considered a second class citizen in the minds of church people, thank God not all.

The best statement on divorce was presented by Albert Barnes in his commentary. IMO.

"It hath been said ... - That is, by Moses, Deu_24:1-2. The husband was directed, if he put his wife away, to give her a bill of divorce, that is a certificate of the fact she had been his wife, and that he had dissolved the marriage. There was considerable difference of opinion among the Jews for what causes the husband was permitted to do this. One of their famous schools maintained that it might be done for any cause, however trivial. The other maintained that adultery only could justify it. The truth was, however, that the husband exercised this right at pleasure; that he was judge in the case, and dismissed his wife when and for what cause he chose. And this seems to be agreeable to the law in Deuteronomy. Our Saviour in Mar_10:1-12, says that this was permitted on account of the hardness of their hearts, but that in the beginning it was not so. God made a single pair, and ordained marriage for life. But Moses found the people so much hardened; so long accustomed to the practice, and so rebellious, that, as a matter of civil appointment, he thought it best not to attempt any change. Our Saviour brought marriage back to its original intention, and declared that whosoever put away his wife henceforward, except for one offence, should be guilty of adultery. This is now the law of God. This was the original institution. This is the only law that is productive of peace and good morals, and that secures the respect due to a wife, and the good of children. Nor has any man or set of men - any legislature or any court, civil or ecclesiastical - a right to interfere, and declare that divorces may be granted for any other cause. They, therefore, whoever they may be, who are divorced for any cause except the single one of adultery, if they marry again, are, according to the Scriptures, living in adultery. No earthly laws can trample down the laws of God, or make that right which he has solemnly pronounced wrong." (e-Sword)
