What are the two unchangeable things by which we may be greatly encouraged?

16People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged." - Hebrews 6:16-18

I assume since both are mentioned in Hebrews 6. The oath to Abraham and the oath in regard to Jesus. Ref 6:20 and 6:14
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”

They are.

I couldn't see what they were until I read the chapter in a certain version.
It was a little ambiguous because the writer mentioned the result of the oath ,6:20, without bringing up the oath.

As a side note I ask those who think Melchizedek was Jesus," if that were so why would God need to appoint Jesus a 2nd time in the order of Himself?"

Why would anyone think Melchizedek was Jesus?
Some people read Hebrews 7:1-10 then build the case.
Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.

It's a real mystery, that's for sure.
That one will have to wait until after the resurrection, I suspect.

Or, if we already have a great high priest in Melchizedek why do we need another one in Jesus? Maybe something to do with Jesus having been in the flesh? Who knows?

Or, Melchizedek was just a man like the rest of us men, but was shrouded in mystery as to who he was and where he came from, and so in that sense had neither beginning nor end, or genealogy. IOW, he was simply a flesh and blood type of Jesus. The author is definitely using him that way......as a type of Jesus from which we can glean understanding.

If I'm reading it right his oath is one of the two unchangeable things. So I think you got that one right.

It’s impossible for God to lie.

I don’t know if this is the answer you are looking for.

But it’s unchangable.

God said "it", and He said He said "it".

1) The word of his oath.

2) The unchanging nature of his purpose.

In regard to these two unchangeable things it is impossible for God to lie. In that we may be greatly encouraged.

Ok. That version seems to make it clearer. Of course we know that God can not lie, and that will not change but the two things indicated don't seem to include God not lying.

the two things indicated don't seem to include God not lying.
God can not be lying because it is an unchanging purpose.
God can not be lying because he swore it with an oath.

In these two things we can be greatly encouraged because it ensures that God will do what he said he will do.

melchizedek, king of salem. the older and the oldest known name of the area called Jerusalem where it gets part of its name from. though it was called the city of Jebus. i hightly doubt that wasnt planned.

The two unchangeable things is that God can not lie and His oath being the promise of eternal life through His Son Christ Jesus who came after the the same order of Melchisedec who was a high priest. Before the foundation of the world Jesus has always been the promise of our High Priest here on earth as it is in heaven and for all eternity.

Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.

Read Hebrews 6:18 without the verse numbers as it helps to put it all together as in one paragraph.

Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
