What bible version do you use?

I use my revolution bible, I believe that's the NIV and i also use an old black bible that just reads "Holy Bible" on the front and that's a KJV i believe

I mostly use the ESV. I like the more literal translation. I also like using the Holman, and the NIV occasionally too. I mostly use the YouVersion Bible app for iOS, which is great.

NIV all the way baby!
I used to only use NIV. The issue I have with using it as a main Bible is that it's a thought-for-thought translation, whereas stuff like the ESV or NASB are word-for-word translations. The downside is that the word-for-word translations are generally less "readable", but I do prefer how it comes out. I sometimes use the NIV to get a slightly different perspective on a passage, as the NIV can put it better at times when the more literal translations have some funny quirks. Overall, a balance between different versions is ideal, which is why I love Bible Study groups, because often we'll have a few different versions between us, which allows for a great balance. In last year's Bible Study, we had 14 people and the versions we had were ESV, NASB, NIV, Holman, Good News, The Message, CEV and NKJV.

Thats alot of versions :lol, Is that NKJV New King James Version? lol I like using King James Version (The original) For a translation that goes closer to back in the time these things actually happened. When you read those word for word translations you can do more study on it and gives room for more various translations of it. Such as KJV. Then I will read NIV for their interpretation of it, Sometimes its hard to read if you arent using NIV. Here is the example of the Free for all translation with the word for word.

KJV: Thou shalt not kill.
NIV: You shall not murder.

Obviously here we are talking about not murdering. The people had to hunt or harvest aka (Kill) In order to survive. Plus some crimes were punishible by death. So obviously we are talking about murder. When you read things like ESV or KJV you have more room for making sense of things for yourselves.

I use NIV because it is readable and it's what I have gotten used to. I have this awesome NIV bible. It's perfect for carrying around in my purse and it is green camo!

The NIV has always been my favorite because it's readable. I feel like when I get too many translations going I find myself going "huh?" So I find it best to stick with one and focus more on the content. "You shall not murder" Ok, God doesn't want us going around with a chainsaw and hacking away at our neghbors. That's pretty clear. Same with "Thou shalt not kill"

So yeah. NIV is my favorite.

I'm a big fan of the NASB. It is typically the most literal translation, with some room for debate of course. I recommend getting comfortable picking up any translation, though.

The Kill/Murder comparison was just an example, If i want something more open for debate i could pick up my KJV, Not by choice its the only other one I have besides my NIV. If i read my KJV i can run through things myself. But if i just want to read a bible translated from a good perspective i will just pick up my NIV, But i have also noticed just from the very first sentence in genesis that the biased opinion of the middle ages has also creeped into it. It reads In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. My NIV says "In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth." While it reading Heavens instead of Heaven shouldnt automatically cause someone to assume anything different than what they currently believe perhaps just provoke further study into the creation and terms used. But why didnt the KJV just go ahead and put in the plural version? Im guessing because it was already assumed that there was only one heaven and in the time of brutal catholic control anything that could even have the slightest possibility of contradicting what they held true. Then it could not be allowed. It saying Heavens instead of The Heaven is not something you should drool on. But they could not allow it anyway because someone might take it that way. Or it just might be generally taken that way.

Wow, I'm really impressed by your translation and understanding of this. I think you bring up very valid points. Might be worth doing a little study over :)

Perhaps we could start it tomrrow :), I have to go to bed. I have been rigorously reading my bible lately so that should be no problem. Oh yes and where are my manners, Thank you for the compliment!

I use the KJV.
Now I'm kinda scared to tell my mom this, but I don't believe the KJV is the only true version.
However I also don't believe that what version to use doesn't matter. I couldn't name which ones to use and not to use, though, I'd have to do more research.

That said, I am sticking with the KJV.

quest, you bring to mind a great point. The version should not matter in MOST cases. We are not muslims and we do not limit the power of our God's word to just aramaic or one translation. However, some translations do not provide true meaning, like the message, and should be avoid as anything other than a reference tool.

I use niv
i cant stand kjv, for many reasons when they were translating it they had very few texts to go by so to me its just wrong.

I mostly use my Life in the Spirit study bible. If not, just a standard KJV. I've considered other versions in the past, but quickly dismissed them because of their background.

I heard there's a YOLO Bible--in other words, "You Only Live Once, so live your life right" kinda thing.

Anyways...
I still use the KJV, but now I also have an ESV for study and comparison purposes.

Have you seen the lolcats Bible? Absolutely hilarious, but I hope no-one actually seriously uses it.

I think I saw a picture of a page from it. It was funny. Some might find it sacrilegious, although I don't.
