What comes to mind?

Thank you for all your comments :)

There are so many angles this can be approached from and points that can be made that it would be impossible to explore all of them fully.

The most obvious is not taking people at face value or defining them by one single attribute. Jesus was more interested in what was in the heart than what was on the outside. Taking pride in your appearance is not wrong and a lot of the laws in Leviticus were designed to distinguish the Israelites from the other cultures. But its not what counts to God as Jesus taught. Our acts can be used as a disguise.

We all make snap decisions about people based on their appearance. When I was doing security for a night club, that's all we had to go on most of the time. Appearances have been linked to sections of society and if you are part of that group then you are expected to dress a certain way or if you dress a certain way then you must be that group. People's determination to pigeon hole others based on one aspect and their understanding of that aspect never ceases to amaze me. A lot of it is stereotype but like all stereotypes, it started somewhere.

Many symbols and aspects of life have things they are attached to and known for but what that is has changed over time. The swastika is now viewed as a symbol of hate and oppression but it wasn't always that way. The rave scene is synonymous with drugs but I never took any, I rarely drank alcohol. But the simple fact I went to raves led to my then bosses threatening me with drugs tests on more than one occasion.

But I've often found parallels between the rave mentality and Christ's teachings. When I went, the MC would often say lyrics like;

"I dont care where you come from, if you're rich or poor. You leave that stuff behind you when you walk through the door. We've got to rave together thats a wicked attitude. We're dedicated ravers rockin' under the same roof"

Or;

"We've got morales for mind. We've got this point to be made. I'm talking bout the racist attitde in life today. We can work it out so lets get together. Black white yellow brown it dont matter. Colours only skin deep whats it all about.
I cant understand the attitude that people are giving out. To hate race for how they dress or what they eat for food Its bang out of order its damn right rude"

I smile as I remember those days but also because I can almost hear Jesus saying something similar about us and him. I really see God in those words even though he's not explicitly mentioned and the setting is not one you'd associate with him. But isn't that when he does his best work?

When I look at the first picture, I see someone hurting, broken, pain. But I see beauty in that (which is slightly disturbing but never mind) I also see echoes of what she can be and how God sees her. She reminds me of me a little and she also reminds me of my friend. The second picture tells me nothing about his heart and that's what counts really.

The tag line from American Beauty, one of my all time favorite films, is look closer. I think thats something I could do more of. God changes our hearts but that's after he's accepted us as we are now. He meets us where we are now but he sees the vast potential in each one of us despite appearances.

Thank you for sticking with this post and making it to the end. I hope that's made sense and not just rambled. There's so many things that could be said but I'll turn the floor over to you.

Peace

Grazer

My first thought was, an angel that has too much cleavage.
The angel was sad.
Than angel had a rosary bead.
She had a dot on her forehead that reminded me of Hinduism.
I thought the Bible never displays a female angel.
I noticed the dominant color black.
I ended the experiment before two minutes was up because the angel had too much cleavage.

LOL Davies, you said my thoughts perfectly! Thanks!

Hi Grazer,

The picture of the girl angel, when I looked closer, her mouth seemed slightly curved like she was smiling a bit.

That gave her a distinctly disturbing aura to me, more so than the black tears and dark clothes, cross, surroundings.

In all, she looked to me like she was doing a smirking parody of grief and therefore looked beautiful but evil. To me :).

The second picture reminded me of the dwarf in Lord Of The Rings. Grumpy, but potentially lovable perhaps?

Hmmm, I quite like gothic stuff like that, but the cross seemed out of place. At first glance I thought she had some epic hair thing going on, but looking a bit longer it's definitely meant to be wings. A gothic angel, perhaps? :chin

At firs I thought she might be sad, or mourning, but the more I look at it the more I think she might just be deep in thought.

Gotta say though, that's way too much cleavage for me. Not good for someone who struggles with sexual sin. :gah

Indeed. She reminded me of Amy Lee, from the (awesome) band Evanescence

Amy Lee, awesome voice,Evanesecence too. Brian Welch is an unbelievably talented guitarist.
I'll also put my head on the chopping block about his former band Korn. Very talented band with relevant lyrics to today's youth and the world in general.
Yep they swear a lot, but the messages are Usually very positive.(Their version of Pink Floyd's brick in the wall is the best)

Grazer ,Thanks for a great thread making us use our grey matter.

Yes, I'm a Korn fan too. :)

Nick, they're great to workout to. I generally just play their songs which have no swearing (yes there are a lot) the down tuned bass has something absolutely primal in it. Jonathon Davis is also an extremely talented writer.

She had wings?....

I'm such a dog... but I can say that I didn't last as long as you or others did before I closed it.

Nick:

(Okay, I had quit talking about the previous photos.)

Oh, Gothic is definitely a legitimate art and fashion style. It doesn't need to lead into esoteric philosophy.

Seems to me that for young people who are into Gothic fashion, it may be a kind of modern version of Victoriana, really.

Blessings.

Well it certainly draws on Victorian themes.

Nick:

Yes, Victoriana with blacks and reds, and floppy, long dresses, and gown-like uppers.

The person in the photo is very modern-looking, in a sense. But she could also have walked out of an oil painting of a 19th century reception.

Great-great-great-grandmothers and their great-great-great-granddaughters may well look very alike, at least, in their formal wear.

The blog that inspired this:

I have a friend who I first met a couple of years ago, we toyed with the idea of becoming more but decided it really wouldn't work but we've remained friends ever since. She's not a Christian and she does challenge me on a number of aspects of my faith but I don't mind that, keeps me from taking my faith for granted plus our discussions are very rarely normal (discussing the morality and methodology of torture in a pizza hut caused 4 people to leave in a hurry) I'm not blind to the fact that despite being engaged, I do still have some strong feelings for her. She's my friend though, I'm always going to. We've been through a bit including one holiday that pretty much defined our friendship as one where we can raise any subject and say pretty much anything to each other.

What is probably causing these feelings is that I know she's hurting. Badly. Many things have happened in her life that has effectively made her feel un-loved and indeed un-loveable (despite my declarations lol) and that she is never good enough. She pointed me at a music video for a track called Numb by Linkin Park to help show what she's going through.

This song has become a favourite of mine as well as Tourniquet by Evanescence which again goes into what my friend is going through. These songs aren't just unique to her, they highlight what many people are going through but it has given me a sense of just how hurt she is - and it hurts me knowing it. I know God can help her but he hasn't. I don't know why. I trust there are reasons and one of them maybe me. My lack of trust/faith is preventing something, lack prayer is the problem I don't know. It just cripples me knowing a friend is hurting. But if you were to look at her, you'd never know she is suffering in such a way and I suspect the same is true for many many people.

Now some people have said that I need to stop being friends with her or not be as close. Now these are the same people who have said I should not be friends with gays. This is just not going to happen. I am viciously loyal to my friends. I am hoping (I think it's hope) that God is using our friendship to help build the bridge between him and her.

Don't take things at face value, don't take people at face value. Dig a little deeper and you'll find issues you never knew and then how you respond may well define you and that person.
