What do Protestants and Catholics have in common?

Which Protestants? Anglican, Reformed, Calvinists, Lutherans... ? Also, which Catholics? Roman church, Greek church, Russian church... ? I'd ask what do Protestants have in common, and a separate question for Catholics.

All right. Should you have in mind Roman Catholics and Lutherans, one thing we do have in common  a somewhat problematic numbering scheme for the Ten Commandments. It was taken up in another thread that we Lutherans, as well as Catholics, split the 10th commandment into two and omit one to start with. How things ended up this way, I cannot say.

Personally, I prefer the Anglican (and Reformed) convention of separating these two:
1st commandment  "You shall have no other gods before me."
2nd commandment  "You shall not make for yourself an idol."

[Interestingly, Jews combine them and call them together the second commandment.]

Our common error (I dare call it an error) is more clearly seen at the 9th-10th commandment(s), where we split these two:
9th commandment  "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife."
10th commandment  "You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor."

They should be counted together as the 10th commandment. This is what Anglicans do.

I'm pretty sure you had wider lines of thought in mind when you asked your question. The above was just a little detail, but I couldn't resist returning to it because I've been thinking about these things recently.

What do Protestants and Catholics have in common?

I'd hope the answer would be saving faith in Christ, not by works but by grace through faith.

God Bless,

Do not, I repeat do not, turn this into bashing, or it will be locked. Just saying it ahead, just in case.

They both believe in the Trinity and approve of the military, most of them anyway.

.

They are both institutional systems. They are both of the same tree. A pruning has taken place. Both bear similar fruit. The Protestant is merely the reformation of the Roman church.

I agree with that too. thanks. :-)

They both have similarity than the difference.

Being an Anglican Protestant, and have studied some Roman Catholic doctrine last year, I tend to agree.

They have Sunday. They have the "pagan" immortality of the soul. Eternally burning hell. They have Christmas and Easter. So right there Protestants have a lot in common with Christians. If you really want to get some blank looks ask a Protestant what they are "protesting."

Bash Bash Bash. :D
Hopefully, we have something in common or else I'm not going to be their friends. :)
I think it's much the same as the Protestants. Not every Catholic believes the same thing.
The Bible College I went to had 3 or 4 catholics. Basically, you're learning new stuff anyway.
The key is how much in touch with core beliefs are they.
I believe there are lots of saved Catholics (I'm Protestant). They just need to be open to the authority of scripture like all of us. One of my best friends happens to be Catholic. I consider him a pretty good Christian. Probably, better than me.
I still have pretty strong doctrinal stands though. No Mary worship. No purgatory. No Pope as the only authority. No Apocryphal books. No prayers for the dead. No penance. No indulgences.
We still get along fine though, as brothers in Christ. I think he is a more liberated Catholic anyway.
1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and
one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Heb 10:15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
Heb 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
Heb 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Heb 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
Heb 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

That's probably the biggest difference.

Some Protestants are "merely reformers" of the Roman church--such as Anglican--and some are much more--pretty much anything Evangelical.

Just as there are Protestants (which includes "independents") that aren't saved. :yes

That's what I thought. I can't remember him ever mentioning it but he must have hinted at it at some point (I follow his podcasts).

I attended a Calvary Chapel church briefly but they weren't very friendly (not a knock against the denomination; many churches are that way :( ).

Glad to hear that Jason. I like those guys too. David Hocking, Chuck Missler.

God judges individuals...not churches. Doesn't matter whether Catholic or Protestant...we will all answer for ourselves...and no one else will answer for us.
I have nothing against God letting a few Catholics in. :lol Oh, alright just having fun.

What do Protestants and Catholics have in common ?

They both think the other is heresy !

:screwloose ...... :shame ......... :lol

Identical New Testament. Neither side claims any Christian apocrypha being inspired.
