How does one know if they are being faithful to Jesus, and at what moment can one know they are not?

Jesus said that if we loved him we would obey his commands.
Jesus's commands can be summarised as the 10 commandments, they are what guide us in knowing how He wants us to live.

A faithful child of God will pick up their cross and follow Jesus being obedient to His commands as a faithful servant of God.

Mat 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Mat 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mat 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Mat 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

The Spirit empowers and leads us in the lifestyle (walk) of faithfulness and fruitfulness.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:14

Christians should always take time to deeply reflect on how they're living and recognize when they're not being faithful to Jesus. Either what they're doing lines up with Scripture or it does not.

Consider the following passage...

“My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”
7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (Heb 12:5–11)

The first two things to consider are 1) that the Lord chastens every person that is His child when they go astray, and 2) only those who are not His children do not partake of His correction (double negative, I know). So, at the very moment you experience His correction you can know for sure that you are going astray.

The other thing to consider is that when He has trained you by His correction (which is painful), the painfulness of the correction is replaced with peace with God. So, when the pain stops and the peace ensues, you know you are being faithful to Jesus.

Does this give you the sense of direction that you are looking for?
