What Is Christianity?

I wonder how far off we are from each other as to what we believe Christianity is.
Can we share what we believe it is and back it up with Scripture?
I'll go first.

Christianity is that Christ was killed for us, that his death has washed away our sins, and by dying he did away with death itself.
Romans 5:8;
1 Corinthians 15:57;

This is what we must believe.

Christianity, the doctrines and precepts of those that are disciples of Christ.
What you are describing (doctrines and precepts) are theories as to how Christianity works.
These theories by themselves are not a definition of what Christianity is.

I believe what you stated is the most important doctrine and precept of Christianity. :nod

Thank you, sir. You are very smart yourself.

Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Christianity is simple enough a child could understand it (Mark 10:15). Yet profound enough the Apostle John said that he supposed the entire world could not contain the amount of books that would be written on the subject of what all Jesus did (John 21:25).

Most I find want to wade in the kiddy pool of theology. It is after all where we all begin our faith and our spiritual journey in Christ throughout eternity to come. We cannot enter in unless we do so in that way.

Mark 10:15 (NASB95)
15“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

Does this mean we are to stay here?

I mean, don't get me wrong. I am condemning no one. I am scolding no one. And I am shaming no one... except maybe my own self on all accounts.

My point, is that the opposition I have been experiencing all these years (it occurs to me) is my attempts any way to dive into the deep end of the theological sea makes waves in the kiddy pool and the permanent residents there despise me for making waves.

I have tried Christian think tanks... only trouble there is everything moves sooooo slllloooowwwlllllyyyyy....

Christian...

Think...

Tank....

Then about 40 thousand words on the meanings of each...

{...hanging myself in effigy ... }

Rollo - when I was pondering which scripture I should use to express.....I didn't realize that you had a VERY similar one posted. You are anointed my friend!

I was going to use: 1 Corinthians 15:44-49 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being", the last Adam (Christ), a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven(Christ).

The Christ leads us into life eternal. He showed up to light the Way..............

On a blog I used to write, I tried to define what I thought were the absolute essentials of Christianity. It didn't resemble the Nicene Creed, but was something along the lines of: (1) We are created beings living in a created universe who are wholly independent on the Creator. (2) In some fundamental way, we are all estranged from the Creator. (3) We cannot bridge the gap through our own efforts. (4) In some mysterious way that the Creator deems satisfactory, He has chosen to bridge the gap through His gift of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (5) We can participate in this gift by acknowledging to God that we are wholly dependent on Him, estranged from Him and unable to bridge the gift through our own efforts, thanking Him for the opportunity to become members of His eternal kingdom through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and embarking on a journey of prayer and faith. No Bible references, I realize, but I was talking about a "bare bones" summary I could explain to someone who had zero interest in the Bible. To me, the rest is just "filling in the blanks," which the 41,000 denominations obviously do in different ways. I have filled in the blanks in a way that is consistent with the statement of belief of this site, but I accept that this isn't the only possible way the blanks could be filled in.

This summary doesn't seem too different to me from The Four Spiritual Laws that were my primary tool when I was a Campus Crusader 45 years ago. I can still remember hearing, "All other religions are man's efforts to reach up to God. Christianity is God reaching down to man." I still think that pretty well says it all.

(While your points are appreciated, the guidelines of this forum regard that you base your posts on specific scripture. Please include scripture [with chapter, verse and version reference] in your future posts in the A&T forum. Obadiah)

Christianity is a religion which is based upon the teachings of Scripture and adhered to by the followers of Christ.

I'll go first.

Christianity is that Christ was killed for us, that his death has washed away our sins, and by dying he did away with death itself.
Romans 5:8;
1 Corinthians 15:57;

This is what we must believe.
I think belieiving that Jesus is the Christ, the True Image of God sent by God, is what Christianity is. The crucifixion and the dying on the cross for our sins is the testimony to God's disposition as the Holy Eternal Spirit of Love, and His proven trustworthiness of Character as displayed in the Lamb of God.. The word Christ or Messiah, actually means the True Image of God sent by God, as in not imagined or created by people. That is why we are not to make any graven images and why there are false gods. If a person believes that this Image of God is Who and how God is. Then this faith, empowers a person to become like Him, or rather restores a man to how a man should be. So that our countenance becomes like His. 2 Corinthians 4:6, John 1:12.

So Christianity is not that Christ was killed for us, even though he was. It's just that Christ accomplished a manifold purpose when he subjected himself to the cross, and one of these was that through his death he destroyed the works of Satan and claimed the power over death which came through the Law of God so that sins could be forgiven according to the law. Satan did the killing. Revelation 12:4, Luke 22:3.

Christianity is about living by Faith as opposed to living according to Knowledge, for the just shall live by Faith. Romans 1:16-17

Christianity is not about salvation from the Law of Moses and sin and death in the flesh. Christianity is about the salvation from death brought by one through his disobedience in the desire for knowledge that has passed unto to all, to the obedience of one unto Faith that brought grace to all.

Romans 5:18-19 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Christianity is about my friend and companion who has come to take my hand that he might lead my back into the paradise of God and through the gate that protects the way to the tree of life; for the Cherubim did honor him as he held the flaming sword that spun every which way. And when he brought me back into the garden and planted me by the tree of Life, he gave unto me a subtle reminder; that Adam's transgression concerned the desire for knowledge, and there are many who desire for the knowledge of sin and death more so than they desire the knowledge of God. For the Law of Moses is the tree of Knowledge unto you, it is the knowledge of sin and death, and as it was said unto you in the beginning. Of all the trees in the garden you may eat, but of the tree of Knowledge you shall not eat; for in the day that you eat thereof your eyes shall be opened and you shall surely die.

After the gift I know in my heart as the Spirit of Christ, if I should leave the Faith that he has given me so that I might glory in the knowledge sin, then I would no longer be walking by Faith, but rather by knowledge. And in doing to I would certainly meet my second death. For what so ever is not of Faith is sin. Romans 14:23

What is Christianity? The knowledge of Christ in us, that we might live according to the Faith that he gives unto us.

I don't think you've answered the title of the thread nor have you responded to the OP.
Am I right or wrong?

Oh, you mean the basic Jesus died on the cross to save sinners...

The Roman road, Acts 2, Acts 4:12, Philippians 2:6-11, you know virtually the entire Bible (based on John 5:39-40 / Luke 24:27).

But again, I ask, do you want me to go into the deep things of God and what Christianity is in the deep end of meaning?

Good morning Rollo,
Very important subject! When we read the Creation story we see God Walking with Adam in the cool of the Evening and I chapter 3 of Genesis we see that Fellowship broken. In Matthew 18:11 we find Jesus teaching that He came for what had been lost, so what was lost?

Again, in Genesis 3 God kicks Adam out of the Garden and breaks fellowship with him and thus, with his wife, Eve. Fellowship was lost. When we take time to study the sayings of Jesus closely we see, even in the healings, that Jesus sought after fellowship. He even said in Luke 5:32 that He had not come for the righteous and had we asked any of the Scribes, Pharisees or the Sadducees they would have explained to us why they were righteous... they were Religious!

We see God/Jesus (John 1:1-3) break fellowship with Adam and Eve, the very thing they were created for and then, four thousand years later, we find Him seeking after us to return to Him, leaving us to ask ourselves, what could God, possibly want with me? I chased young and younger women. I got into so many fights it was not strange for me to be shot at. I lead thousands of people into sexual sin.

I cheated, Iied, I stole and I wish that were all I did, what does God want with me. God wants the Walk, the Open Fellowship of man we find in the Creation Story. God did not come to create a new religion called Christianity, He came to walk along side us and we perverted it into religion. Christianity, as a religion is every bit as good as being an Islamic for gaining entry into Hell. The desired Christianity God desires is a moment by moment walk with Him through life.
