When reading all of Paul's writings one must be aware of what law Paul is referring to. The context of what law he is referring to will help one understand exactly what he is telling us.
Paul makes mention of many “laws.” In fact, he makes mention of at least seven.
1) The Law of God (Romans 3:31; 7:22-25; 8:7)
2) The Law of Sin (Romans 7:23-25)
3) The Law of Sin and Death (Romans 8:2)
4) The Law of the Spirit of Life (Romans 8:2)
5) The Law of Faith (Romans 3:27)
6) The Law of Righteousness (Romans 9:31)
7) The Law of Christ (1 Corinthians 9:21)
So when Paul says we are not under the law, he is not saying we are not under the law of God, he is telling us that we are not under the law of sin and the law of sin and death.
2 Peter 3:16
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
