Growth When hermeneutics goes wrong

Hermeneutics: the branch of knowledge that deals with interpretation, especially of the Bible or literary texts.

Since everyone has the ability to read and interpret scripture for themselves, what happens if the person does it incorrectly? As followers of the word, of course we are to help each other keep on the right track, but what does the Bible say about God's reaction to misguided faith?
What if someone is doing something completely in faith- thinking they are doing exactly what God's word says for them to do, but...they miss the mark? Or they didn't know God's word says to do something, so they don't do it.

An example would be Deuteronomy 22:5 "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God."

I interpret that to mean that women shouldn't do what pertains to men (like serving on the front lines in combat) and men shouldn't do what pertains to women (like working in the fashion industry). It also entails them wearing the clothing of the other sex- for example, an army uniform is typically masculine and evening gowns are typically feminine. So doing these things is a no-no. However, what if my interpretation is incorrect? What is God's point of view on well-meaning, but misinterpretation?

I try to find what the intent of the law is and this is what I have understood....
In this case, God says that women should not dress in men's clothing and men should not dress in women's clothing, but why?
Depending on the culture that you live in, altering what you wear alters the appearance of what gender you are, thus creating a deception. ie. trans-gender dress
Women in our culture can wear pants and have short hair without people being deceived into believing they are a man. Scottish men can wear a kilt without people be deceived into believing they are a women.
But in the middle east if a man were to cover his head and possibly wear a veil this would be a deception. The purpose of any deception is usually for unGodly purposes.
 
correction the army acu's and dcu's are unisex,. the older bdu's when they had the pregnancy flap for the pants and the button on the jacket were still unisex in that the ladies could use them.
 
I believe You will recieve a very wide range of misguided answers on this one, perhaps mine included. But I believe in my heart the answer lays in Proverbs 11:27 He that diligently seeketh good seeketh favor; But he that searcheth after evil, it shall come unto him.

The frequently asked question by the atheist seeking to confound and to silence the Christian Witness is, "What of the man in the heart of Africa that has never heard the Gospel?" We know from reading Romans 1 that the the things of God are revealed through His creation and if a man or a woman removes themselves from the corruption of the cities it is easier to touch God and many doing so are like me and my wife, we do not want to return because the frustration does separate us from the hand of God.

Who could ever be more in touch with God's creation than the man that has never had the corruption we understand and if they will seek after God, we know from the past, He does reveal Himself to these peoples. So to cease dancing, God will not hold it against them if they are seeking and have erred for where there is no written law, there is no sin.

Hermannutcakes has always been a very, very wrong way to understand scripture. It's takeing human natural reasoning and trying to comprehend spiritual things.

It's why we are told we need no man to teach us, but the Holy Spirit teaches us all things................

sometimes we have different interpetations and both claim to be from the Holy Spirit.
 
Yeah...hermeneutics kinda scares me. I think this is one reason I'm consdering Catholicism. They've done all the work for you!
so you like them better, they don't contradict their own positions, nevermind you cant take your own position on the bible and share it there. the magisterium tells them what the bible says. not that they are always wrong but they have the idea of the church and the bible are authority. they don't believe in solo scriptura. neither is perfect, but i will take the protestant position over the rcc. the jw does the same. been there done it.

so did the ancient jews, and they missed the mark. the rcc im not saying its a cult and not part of the church but they do have some problems with that. i should just annie up and attend the local charismatic catholic meeting tomorrow.

NO, if it's the Holy Spirit we might have different levels of revelation, which makes it look like different understandings. It's when I use Human reasoning and reliegious dogma I picked up through the years to understand scripture, that is where things go wrong.

We all have reliegious nonesense in us, so we need the Holy Spirits help to understand scripture without that garbage in the way.

TAke Job for example. Someone may read it and say..

God gave permission to the devil to murder a mans children who served him.

That is a pretty serious accusation against God to do such a thing, but that is how it reads to a lot of folk, with no thought of what they are implying about God. I read it the same way for a long time, until the Lord corrected me.

So, just because we read it different, does not mean more light can't be given. If a person can reasonably compare other scriptures and show why God never Gave permission to the devil to murder a mans kids, then that person can have the same light (If Doctrines of nonesense do not get in the way)

It's all about wanting to lean and be teachable.

Those that understand scripture best are those that only have God's will in their heart and mind. Those that will move cross country if God said move. It's only those who understand if it's a doctrine of man, or scripture.

Not my words, Jesus said that, and that is the key to getting right revelation.

Many don't even go to church, or obey God at all and are suddenly bible experts. There is no such thing as that.

That's good that you were joking because putting your confidence (faith) in men is usually a mistake, and we are warned about that in scripture. Even PHD's can make mistakes like all humans, be deceived like all humans, or even be deceptive like all humans. If they chose to be deceptive, the PHD's are smart enough to Pile it Higher and Deeper. That stems from a joke, but is in fact true.

It would be irresponsible of us to take the approach that you describe. It's always a bad idea to let another do ones homework for them, you're at their mercy if you do. Whether they are innocently wrong or outright deceptive, (I Believe) that this may just be a way to lose out on God's mercy. God told us to not have confidence in man, and that we need no teacher beside the Holy Spirit, and to search the scriptures daily. So to do as you describe, would in my mind...be disobeying God. What do you think?

I agree with this. If one is seeking God, they will want to do their own homework. Don't take the big name respected Pastor's word for it that...da da da, whatever. anyone can make a mistake. No one knows it all. Why is this? Because God wants us to seek Him personally and individually. He will have mercy on those who do. If we throw that out the window, it will probably aggravate God. (All through the OT, we see God telling them, if this, then that...if you will do this then I will do that, and if you don't then I will...and so forth)

Then the scripture also tells us what to do. Acts 17:11, Jeremiah 29:13, Psalm 118:8, Psalm 146:3, Romans 8:5, Galatians 5:16, 1 John 2:27...and on and on and on.

So to let them "do all the work for us"...is actually dis-obeying God and a dangerous thing to do.

uhm god did give satan permission to kill. if he didn't allow that then why does it say and the dragon warred against the saints and OVERCAME them if satan cant kill us , show me that in the bible? God aslo slew the firstborn of man and beast in exodus. not for their sin but of the parents and household that didn't put the blood on the door. a baby cant be considered evil if its too young to know what evil is.

im all for the unction of the Lord but yeah, anyone can say thus saith the spirit if its not checked in the bible first. the bible was written for a reason to show us that God is real and he did say what he wanted to say. we cant be esoteric with that stuff. the more I think I know, I look back when I was shown different how wrong I am. sometimes God allows that and I don't know why.
