5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome."

This thread is all about nailing down which Commandments Jesus is speaking about when He says to us, "If you love me, keep my commandments."

At this point, we all are a Truth Team. To start with, I'd like to know which, if any, Commandments do you think Jesus is referring too? Are you ready? I know lots of you have convictions in this vital area of Christian living.

Ok, help me Team. Which Commandments?

Seeing that there is 613 of them, that's if most people know this, the majority, when asked, think of only the Ten & think that is it. But when talking about the ten, they were given to show that no man can keep these commandments, the only one who can is YHSWH, this shows that for salvation we need JESUS it cannot be done any other way. After I have now got that off my chest, we have a lot to choose from Chopper, take your pick lol.

God Bless

Jesus defined his commandments as love. "If ye love one another..." type thing. Love is the essence of the Mosaic Commands, such as the ten commandments. They are the standards of righteousness which we uphold. If one loves they will tend to emulate the standards of the Law incorporating them into their character as a witness and being obedient.

That said, I realize there's 613 of those Laws. Discernment lies with what is moral (such as do not commit adultery, do not lie, honor your father and mother, etc etc) and that which was a shadow of things to come, i.e. what the Adventists call "ceremonial" which I called a sort of play acting of prophecy. Since Christ is the substance of those shadows, the object is Christ and thus a better covenant where the old has passed away. The moral standards did not pass away.... the old system dealing with the forgiveness and reconciliation to God passed away. Indeed, that was in theory by faith and pointed to one who will fulfill those ceremonies. Before Christ came, the ceremonies had to be done by command. After He came, they were replaced by a better Covenant.

So here's my understanding: Law is two parts 1) standards of righteousness (if one could keep them then God promised they would live) and 2) punishments for disobedience and means of atoning via sacrifice and rituals that pointed to Christ.

What has been nailed to the cross is #2 because he is the Great High Priest with his own blood sacrificed and presented once for all for us poor sinners who can't keep #1. But being forgiven we do not nullify (#1) by faith, but rather uphold it. And indeed, we even uphold #2 in the sense we now understand what they mean. Circumcision, for example, pointed to a circumcised heart (even the OT said that). So like many of the ceremonies we do not practice it legalistically, but do fulfill it in its intent.

I have not looked at them in a researching way as yet, but if Gary said there are 613 of them, then I am sure we could put all of them under the ten commandments. In other words, they are commandments which expand and explain further the Ten Commandments. If so, maybe we can also refer which commandment goes under which of the Ten. (Just a suggestion).

I would rather fail under love God and neigbour than fail trying to live under 613 laws perfectly.

Matthew 22:36-39 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

Why is love the greatest and most important command?
Because it is the key which accesses ALL the other commandments.

God is Truth and is Love. Truth IS, and Love expresses Truth. Both Truth and Love is unconditional because neither needs anything to make it complete. That part, 'unconditional', takes us / self / old nature, out of the picture. So as soon as you think 'what's in it for me' forget it, you lost ALL the commandments in that moment.

How does unconditional love access all the other commandments?
Unconditional love comes from absolute faith in Christ and in God. It is total surrender of self. That is, to be fearless, doubtless, all focus in Christ, all accepting, all obedience, all devotion in Christ. By being so, one is with Truth. All the commandments become obvious, Don't even have to think about them, because in your unconditional love you automatically become obedient to them all. The obedience is easy because it is a desire out of the unconditional love for/in/is Christ.

The 'by being so' is not by doing so. It is letting go, which is not doing but undoing. It is allowing Christ and God to take over our will and our life through the exchange of loving. Being so, is:
loving the Love that loves you.

1John 5:2 "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.

Started a series Christ and the Law (John MacArthur) which addresses the OP.

There was the civil law (Judicial law), ceremonial law and moral law. Jesus said none would pass until all fulfilled. So the question is which from each category above did Jesus Christ fulfill at His first advent and which ones will be fulfilled at the second advent?

Let me know if I'm banging on the right cylinders here.

Edit: The above is a proposition for discussion and not an answer.

The number of 613 laws are counted so according to rabbinical counsel. You could number them yourself and come up with something completely different.

So here's my understanding: Law is two parts 1) standards of righteousness (if one could keep them then God promised they would live) and 2) punishments for disobedience and means of atoning via sacrifice and rituals that pointed to Christ.

King David committed adultery, conspiracy, murder, lied, lusted, yet he lived and is called a righteous man, what saved him from death was his repentance. The same goes for the whole Gentile kingdom of Nineveh they did not sacrifice their animals they covered them sackcloth too. No where was sacrifice a prerequisite for forgiveness no where does God ever say you must spill blood before I can forgive you.

"So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not."

4 thoughts.

1). Jesus could mean that our obedience is an act of love to God, or an act of Love to Jesus. If that is do then it's not about obeying all the commandments but actively obeying any of the commandments.

2). Jesus could have been talking about obeying His teachings. Not just about all the laws, but what Jesus came and taught. Kind of like if we love Him show that we appreciate Him coming and teaching, by obeying what He taught.

3). Other wise another thought is to have Jesus in us by the Holy Spirit. In love we should obey His commands. Abraham moved to Canaan because He was told to. That obedience among other things is recoginized as the good that Abraham did.

4). As mentioned above in this topic. There are 613 laws. It could very well be all of them that we are to keep to show our love. Or in another way of putting it. Do as it says elsewhere. Repent and turn from our sins. If it's true that by breaking one law we break all of them, then our love and our obedience may come from recognizing our sins and turning away from them. As often as we see our error. Not to be saved (because Jesus's did that already) but do it to show our love, and make Jesus's sacrifice worth it.

Thank you so very much, my new friend, from joining us in this most important thread IMO. O if we could just identify the commandments that Jesus Christ wants us to follow, we all will be different, and truly know what being born of the Spirit in that new man is all about....

Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in the Messiah Yahshua, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in the Messiah Yahshua hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, Elohim sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Word of YHWH)

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
8:4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." (ESV)

My understanding of Romans 8:1-4

Romans 8:1-4
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (NIV)

So in regards to the verses:
law of the Spirit is based on Truth and Love.
law of sin and death is based on deception and fear.
righteous requirement of the law
is to live according to the Spirit (according to Truth and Love). To be ruthfully honest and loving in the heart in all matters.

5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome."

That we love one another as Christ has loved us (John 15:12) (1 Corinthians Chapter 13) (The Epistle of 1 John)

Hello my good friend Pegasus. Thank you for one of my favorite Bible Teachers, Dr. John MacArthur. I found his teaching "Christ and the Law" and will start studying it.

Thank you so much for joining in on this thread. You are so loved by me because of your knowledge of the Word of our awesome Logos, Christ Jesus....John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim. (Word of YHWH)

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (KJV)

"If you love me you will keep my commandments" is actually a quote from John's own Gospel. It's from a larger speech from Jesus right before He was arrested and Crucified.
In this speech Jesus gives two very specific commands. They are often overlooked and focus is placed elsewhere because of the use of the word "Commandments" as if Jesus wasn't talking about what He just said. But I think He was actually talking about the two directives He had just said.

John 13:34 & John 14:11 are the two commandments. (Ignoring chapter and verse numbering system makes the conversation easier to follow)

These are pretty hard core commandments. They are more important and difficult than any other list of activities. And they must define a follower of Jesus.(which is the only way to heaven).

Thank you my friend John for dropping in. It's always good to see your posts. I have always valued your insights and instruction. Those two portions of Scripture are indeed very important in this thread. As you say, are overlooked by many.

Love You,
Chopper

I believe this says it better than I could have but is the gist of what I was saying about the Law in relation to faith today. I hope this thread does not turn into any sort of Law vs Grace debate. I don't seriously think there's any Christian who seriously thinks the Law saves them, despite their understanding of the Law.

  • “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
  • ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

The commandments he is referring to are given in context, in the first two verses of 1 John 5.

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 1 John 5:1-2

  • everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
You shall love the Lord your God.
  • By this we know that we love the children of God
‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40

Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:15

If there were a coin , the tails side would list the original 10 commandments , from them you can derive the damage caused by not honoring them . The heads side would be Jesus summation of them of how to get r done and stay in the zone .. kinda, sorta

Hi tim-from-pa. You my friend have always made interesting posts that I've appreciated, and learned from. I am really glad you decided to join with me in discovering which commandments or commands that we are responsible to obey as a sign that we love Jesus.

Welcome aboard, I'm interested in what you have to present.
