The commandments he is referring to are given in context, in the first two verses of 1 John 5.

This is a great topic! If we pay attention to Jesus when He responded, concerning this very point in Matt 22:36-40 and if we keep the two.as he spoke them, the only Laws we will disobey are the Dietary Laws that, in Acts 10:13, Peter was commanded to ignore when he was told to "kill and eat. These two commands cover all of the Mosaic Law, save the Dietary laws."

How can a Christian keep any Law and Commandment of the Lords? If we truly love the Lord, we want to please Him. That being the case, how do we please Him?

Concerning one of the greatest Men of God who ever lived, Paul wrote, "By Faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this Testimony, that he pleased God (Heb. 11:5)."

What was this Testimony that pleased God? The next Verse tells us.
"But without Faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6)."

The question is not so much, "What are the Commandments?" but rather, "How do we keep them, whatever they might be?" There is only one way they can be kept. That way is by the Believer placing his or her Faith exclusively in Christ and what Christ has done for us at the Cross, and maintaining his or her Faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross. The Holy Spirit who only works between the framework of Christ and the Cross, i.e., The Finished Work of Christ, i.e., The Blood of Jesus, keeps all Laws and Commandments for us and do what needs to be done in the Believers life because our Faith is glorifying Christ. The Holy Spirit will not glorify any man or woman. When we try to live any way other than God's Way, it irritates our Heavenly Father.

No, the question is not, "Do we keep the Commandments?" That's where the great problem is! The only way it can be done is by the Means of the Cross (Rom. 8:2).

The only way to God is through Jesus Christ (John 14:6)...the only way to Jesus Christ is by the Means of the Cross (Luke 14:27). The only way to the Cross is a denial of self (Luke 9:23). If any person tries to come any other way, Jesus says, "they are a thief and a robber" (John 10:1).

1. Jesus Christ is the source of all blessings.
2. The Cross is the means by which all blessings are given.
3. The object of our faith must be Christ and the Cross.
4. That being done, the Holy Spirit will greatly help us.

"If you love me you will keep my commandments" is actually a quote from John's own Gospel. It's from a larger speech from Jesus right before He was arrested and Crucified.
In this speech Jesus gives two very specific commands. They are often overlooked and focus is placed elsewhere because of the use of the word "Commandments" as if Jesus wasn't talking about what He just said. But I think He was actually talking about the two directives He had just said.

John 13:34 & John 14:11 are the two commandments. (Ignoring chapter and verse numbering system makes the conversation easier to follow)

These are pretty hard core commandments. They are more important and difficult than any other list of activities. And they must define a follower of Jesus.(which is the only way to heaven).

The manner that John uses this whole dissertation of Jesus' is in keeping as a "keynote". IOW John intends the whole dissertation by using a small section of it. The same way we might reference the Sermon "In the Hands of an Angry God".

Paul and the writer of Hebrews especially used this literary device to point out key principles to expound and explain the Gospel message.
The notion of "Law versus Grace" being already answered with finality firmly in John's mind when he wrote 1John. So John wasn't going to explain it again because paper and ink was exhorbitantly expensive. But the aspect and importance of what Jesus said was needed for the point John was making...so he included that message using a literary device he knew that they would understand.

I will have stay with the context of what John is teaching which is loving God and loving your neighbor.

However we must realize that the 10 Commandments show us or give us guidance on how to love God and love our neighbor.

Example if we are liars, lying to our neighbor we are not loving God, nor our neighbor and as a result of living as an unrepentant liar, This same John shows us the outcome of such action.

But the cowardly, unbelieving,abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

I just don't see how anyone can misunderstand the word all... all liars, to me covers everyone who is a liar.

So also with idolaters, murderer's, adulterers... all being examples of hating God or hating our neighbor.

I agree that the 10 Commandments are important to observe and live each day, with the exception of the Sabbath. The Christian Sabbath is Sunday. Here's a question. Should we rest from all labors on Sunday. The day has changed from Saturday to Sunday, but resting re-energizes our bodies for the six days ahead. God knew our bodies were not made to work 24/7.

I'm sorry but I don't see where the Sabbath has changed from Saturday to Sunday.


However we are not to keep the Sabbath as prescribed by the law of Moses, but that man needs a day of rest each week.

It was the 7th Day long before the law of Moses and remains today, as the 7th Day, which point us to the Day of rest to come, which will be when Christ returns and removes all our enemies and we will receive an immortal body that will not die anymore, nor will it have sin to strive [make war] against the Spirit within us.

No enemies!


We have been here for 6000 years, and Christ is coming soon, in which we will reign with Him for 1000 years on the 7th prophetic Day, or the 7000th year.

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:8

After the 6000th or 6th "Day", we will rest.

There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. Hebrews 4:9


The weekly Sabbath points to this rest.

When I consider commands of Jesus Christ, I immediately think of the Beatitudes. IMO, If I were to show my love for my Savior Jesus, that would be by living those Suggestions? NO! Opinions? NO! What then? COMMANDS!!

Thank you old friend. I have always loved the 10 Commandments. Sabbath keeping on Sunday, simply means to me to REST. I find that I, even at 77 years of age, I still need one day of rest to stay healthy. Hmm, God already knew that!! If He rested, what does that say about our feeble dirt bag lives?

Love your honesty, because it applies to all of us.

We all have an ego which loves to claim things for itself (look what I know) and even claims Scripture, God and Christ (I know him). It's our human nature, it is nature of this world, which is satans domain. All Christians are Christ's warriors against satan's world of fear and deception. While we remain in Christ we are the Light of the world . All our love and power comes from Christ. Without Christ our light turns off and we disappear into the darkness once again. Keeping Christs Commandments ensures we will have a bright light indeed. Where ever we go, all darkness will recede from us.

What a wonderful thread.
Everytime works or eternal salvation is the theme, the commandments are always brought up.

Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep my commandments".

So, yes, it's very important to know which commandments Jesus is speaking of.
I often hear that we are no longer under the law but are now under grace.
I've heard one person say explicitly that he is not required to obey. We were speaking about obeying GOD. As if one could choose not to obey God.

Jesus said that He did not come to aboish the law, but to fultill it.
Mathew 5:17 Some take this to mean that He did it all and so now we have nothing to do. In Mathew 5:18 Jesus clearly said that not even the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away, but this is ignored.

In Mathew 5:19 He says that anyone teaching that the law has passed will be the least in the Kingdom. This is also ignored.

I could go on about this since Mathew 5:20 is the key, but enough of this.

Let me say that Yes, Jesus did abolish the civil law and the ceremonial law.
He DID NOT abolish the moral law. How could He? GOD IS MORAL. You cannot sparate God from morality. It's a part of His being.

So what are Jesus' commandments?
If we're honest, they are written all over the gospels.
He goes beyond even the 10 commandments. Jesus demands an internal change, and not only an external action.

He not only does not want us to lie, He wishes that we do not WANT to lie ourselves, just as He doesn not want us to.

I'd start at the beatitudes in Mathew 5.
I'd go to bearing good fruit in Mathew 7.
Being the salt of the earth, being a memeber of the Kingdom of which He speaks so often. It's a pearl, a hidden treasure, a net. The wicked do not belong in the Kingdom, only the pure in heart.

The 10 commandments show us how to be pure in heart.
The two commandments Jesus left us with will cover all the others.
If we love God and ourselves and our neighbor, we will not wish to do harm to God, ourself or our neighbor. The decalogue is necessary to understand exactly what it is we're not supposed to DO.

And Jesus takes it to an internal change where we do not WANT to do.

So the commandments are everything Jesus taught.
He said "Follow Me".
He said "Be perfect like My Father in heaven is perfect".

He also said "My yoke is easy and My burden is light".
The Holy Spirit is our paraclete so that we can keep the commandments to the best of our ability.

Be the light
Be born again
Bear good fruit
Be the salt
Receive the Holy Spirit
Feed the hungry
Cloth the naked

What a wonderful thread.
Everytime works or eternal salvation is the theme, the commandments are always brought up.

Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep my commandments".

So, yes, it's very important to know which commandments Jesus is speaking of.
I often hear that we are no longer under the law but are now under grace.
I've heard one person say explicitly that he is not required to obey. We were speaking about obeying GOD. As if one could choose not to obey God.

Jesus said that He did not come to aboish the law, but to fultill it.
Mathew 5:17 Some take this to mean that He did it all and so now we have nothing to do. In Mathew 5:18 Jesus clearly said that not one the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away, but this is ignored.

In Mathew 5:19 He says that anyone teaching that the law has passed will be the least in the Kingdom. This is also ignored.

I could go on about this since Mathew 5:20 is the key, but enough of this.

Let me say that Yes, Jesus did abolish the civil law and the ceremonial law.
He DID NOT abolish the moral law. How could He? GOD IS MORAL. You cannot sparate God from morality. It's a part of His being.

So what are Jesus' commandments?
If we're honest, they are written all over the gospels.
He goes beyond even the 10 commandments. Jesus demands an internal change, and not only an external action.

He not only does not want us to lie, He wishes that we do not WANT to lie ourselves, just as He doesn not want us to.

I'd start at the beatitudes in Mathew 5.
I'd go to bearing good fruit in Mathew 7.
Being the salt of the earth, being a memeber of the Kingdom of which He speaks so often. It's pearl, a hidden treasure, a net. The wicked to not belong in the Kingdom, only the pure in heart.

The 10 commandments show us how to be pure in heart.
